But if we look at today’s headlines, it is clear that if we are in another cold war, it looks absolutely nothing like the last one. Think of a cold war not as a single historical event, but as an ideal type of geopolitical standoff. It is a deep, durable political confrontation where major powers fight for order and influence, but—crucially—they stop short of a direct hot war because the cost of mutual destruction is simply too high. Back in the twentieth century, that standoff was defined by two rigid, opposing blocks.
