Scrumphy podcast, gallop 3 so in, Lauren Jenkins, at the barn, whales HQ, looking ahead to the URC season. Yesterday, we were at Inherend's with the Ospreys kicking off the new Scrumphy podcast season, and today, our attention will shift towards the other regions. We've spent many a day here at the barn, on the National Centre of Excellence at this cord, but yeah, we've had a long, long summers break longer than usual. Ospreys felt that way for me. I haven't consumed a huge amount of rugby other than rugby's greatest rivalry series. So, unlike last year, where we went straight into a lion's tour, straight into a women's well-cup, sort of felt just like one long, ongoing season. I feel refreshed coming back and coming in to guide what is going to be a very long season, because we will be rolling more or less straight into the rugby world cup. Yeah, a long day today, actually. Players from all the regions come to chat to us.
We've taken an executive call on two things. You're not going to hear from an Osprey. Yesterday, that's done, that's you fixed and there. And we're not going to play all the interviews. I think we're going to pick the best of the best. And we'll also be hanging around for the couple of hours, because Fiorliwis will be joining us from Wales Rug Union International. She's just switched codes, but she's here primarily to preview Friday. Live rugby, back in the BBC. It's a WXV, Wales against South Africa. So, we'll tackle that later today. But you can hear from the wild seasons, and we've recorded one of them already. So, we already know who the first person will be you'll hear from. And I can tell you it was a great chat, wasn't it? Yeah, back in Rennes, in our Scarlet's kit for the very first time. It is Mr Gareth Ansken.
Gareth Ansken, I don't know what it is, because obviously I've seen you in it 30, 40 times, but you in red. Does my colour is... Yeah, nice colour. But what were you walked in and f***ed? I was a bit like, whoa, I don't know, it's just... There's something fresh about the kit as well. It's a start of season. Brand new kit. Brand spanking new kit. Did you take it back in it, Gareth? Two years ago? No, I suppose I didn't really. Obviously, once I knew I wasn't staying in Béon and him the conversations around, I suppose first the conversation was, do I feel like I still want to keep playing and do I feel like I got something to contribute? And I felt like, with the way the season went in France, I didn't play as much, I would like, particularly towards the back end of the season. And I suppose I was hopeful, St. Louis happened. And you know, I came back to Wales, not knowing that I had anything. There was obviously some opportunities and conversations going on. And then when Peeley called up and chased up a little bit further, it was, St. Louis excited me with a squad they had. And particularly, I probably
felt like I wanted to go somewhere where I could have a right first. And I felt like the Scarlet was that with a sense of, you know, they've got Kosti who's a settled international now, Karwin, who looks full of potential and promise. And I felt like I've got a nice little space to fill in supporting those guys, playing a bit, supporting the group and then hopefully, maybe trying to pass on some of the knowledge I've learnt over my career. So 10 years ago, with a Gartathun scum of 2016, gone to a club without mentality? No, no, no. And that's, you know, I suppose maturity and generalter, you start, you know, you realise now, you know, I'm 35 and it's a young man's game and I certainly am well aware of that these days. Because positional rivalry is a real thing. Yeah, it's one of those ones too, I think, is a fly half you want to feel, you know, we've kind of spoken on there in previous episodes about 10s and I think it's a special position and I feel like you want to feel like it's your team.
And, you know, I'm more than happy to help provide support and don't get me wrong, I want to play and if I play well and, you know, there's always that competition but I really take a bit of, I suppose excitement and actually trying to help pass on what I've learnt and I'd love to see Kosti and Karwin keep progressing their journeys and hopefully they can continue with getting in touch with our honours and having, you know, long crews ahead of them and I feel like I can take some real enjoyment doing that this season. I think on paper it just felt like a perfect fit for anyone looking at it because Salo has never had that mentor at all, I don't think and he's had a pretty rough ride, hasn't he over the last few years. But Karwin is someone we've seen a fair bit of, well, if you've been watching under 20s, talk to us a bit about him, has he got a certain swagger about him as a tan that maybe we haven't seen in a few way or so. It's, I'm only just getting to really no count because he took a bit of a bump just as he was coming back into pre-season so he's only just started training this week with us. Karwin,
like at John's, I should give him his phone. 18 years old, Hank? Yeah, I just know he's young. I just know he's very young but he's a good kid, with Son, I spent a little bit of time together and you know you look at some of his clips, even playing last year at the USSE, it's such a young age. He did tremendously well and you can see he's been pretty dominant at the under 20s level so there's plenty of promise there and you know like you said with Sam Costello, I suppose been around the Welsh environment particularly when he was very young and like he says, he's had some some tough pressure at times that's probably undeserved I thought so I do have a sauce swap for Sam as well and I think he's in a really good part of his career now where he can really push on and really try and compete to become the starter for Wales you know that I'm sure that's his focus but if I can help drive all of us getting better and just pass on some of the things I've learned over the years to help take a bit of pressure off him and I suppose just helping with urgent
and that's something that I haven't always had and I'm sure I would have enjoyed that so I see you know a real benefit and being able to provide that and like you said Lauren my my focus with trying to find a side was not just finding a contract that didn't really interest me I wanted to go somewhere where I could felt like I could contribute play but there was a right nucleus around and I feel like the scallops ticked those boxes for me. I always think about the Welsh mentality that culturally how quite reserved as people we don't like pushing people forward or sales forward and I'm always mindful with Count Lega Jones that there's a real clash with people say we should hype this guy up and we shouldn't hype this guy up and then I keep thinking about Riai, he's only kept anything of the Levin Yamal who's 17 and Keleon and Bapy before him who'd carry the weight of a nation on their shoulders when they're 17 18 and that they were born to do it. Do we like other analogies to be drawn do we have to be careful or you or someone who is most self-confidence no it's given the responsibility given the accountability to score with it. Yeah I think there's a
little bit of both I think particularly in the positions that we play it's a tough one I think he's certainly shown enough potential I do think we have to be careful at times of I think the issues we've had in the past particularly in Wales is within the regions as soon as you have a good game at the USC level there's usually an article the next day that goes with it about making a Welsh squad and I think where where we need to get to is just driving a bit more consistency around you know you look at the top teams in the world guys have to have usually one or two good seasons not one or two games you need to have one or two good seasons to then be looked at the next level and I'm probably thinking the past when I look at the USC the Welsh regions I feel like at times we're too quick to try and push guys ahead after one or two performances you know you have to drive a bit more consistency and I think time the settles important you know I look back at guys like Josh Naveed when he when he finally broke into the Welsh team he also had a cap really young but you know he was tearing down trees for Carter for three or four years so much
so that you know the media was saying we need him we need him but when you look at when he finally got his chance he didn't disappoint he was so ready for it he'd been doing it for so long and I think if we can get Welsh test rugby back to the system we've had in the previous years we're going to need to try and get to the point where we're asking guys can you do it for a year can you do it for two years we need consistency out of you because test match rugby is a different beast and I think in the past you know particularly the last five or six years we've been a bit too quick to pull guys out of regional rugby and put a fair bit of pressure on young guys shoulders to go and dominate test rugby when they probably haven't been ready and the knock on effect those you know if we don't get the right results which we've struggled with then suddenly you didn't these guys confidence and it takes a while to bounce back so you know it's hurt a few guys in the past but at the same time all players want to get to the top as quickly as possible by thank everyone's good at judy of care to help extend guys careers and make sure they're in good position when they do get that chance just on the cultural point go through we were speaking
to a coach a couple of weeks ago that was saying one of the problems he's witnessed in Wales is a lack of players challenging his ideas or coaching ideas as a whole maybe we don't have the same level of vocalness as other countries is that a string you would say you have to above that you are willing to go into an environment and see challenge coaches which is healthy thing right yeah look it's something that I've had to learn how to do because naturally it probably came to me I've always thought about the game quite and little and analytically and I suppose as I've gone older and matured of it it's about how you can come to the the message together and and so it doesn't become a players vs coach thing because in my experience that doesn't go down too well and ultimately where it's tough is you know we're all competitors and ultimately it's about what is
the best for the team now you made disagree on things but I don't think it can never be personal and in my experience in Wales I think we do struggle with not making it personal you know it doesn't mean you know a good guy you can make mistakes like I've made plenty of my career you can get things wrong likewise coaches can get things wrong and no one's perfect coaches don't know everything nor do players and players are always going to get things right so it's just how can we how can we get to point out as quickly as possible because it's always about what's best for the team and it's probably sank that culturally and within Wales we probably struggle with we're probably also a culture that we we like banter and we like to pull boys back down which is great yeah we say that I've always seen I've also seen that because of that it does I've seen guys go into the showers because of it so it's a tough one front not just stand up and yeah well you know you never want to walk away from the crowd do you yeah it's it's tough to yeah particularly when you're young
is to sort of walk to your own beat a little bit so I mean one thing I've always found interesting and I'll spend others about as you know what I went to England and Gloucester the level of banter in the English clubs is so much more polite and you know there's a line that won't be crossed and it's it's pretty easy whereas you come back to the Welsh regions it everything's fair game and you can see guys get absolutely ripped and locked when you're when you're not at the battle jokes it's good fun but when it's your time to take the heat for 19 20 yeah you know and and and it can you know it does eco-aid guys confidence at times so it's sank that I think we've all got to be aware of at times is just how we can build guys up and and and you're point around coaches and challenging ideas I think is important as long as done the right way and as long as everyone's in the same mindset that it's what is best for the team not this is my idea I'm right you're wrong because that's not effective or helpful for anyone so it's just how you you come to
that realization I think the biggest thing with that is if there's no trust and care there it's probably hard to get to that point so I think that's where building relationships with coaches and players once you have a level of care for each other it's not as personal you working closely with Wampheel yeah yeah look I've really enjoyed my talent scale it's already and I suppose particularly early on in preseason was working daily with Pele around things because of such a young group and and there was season as many strong voices there so you know now that now that the Welsh international's are back that's obviously been that bird not bird in but I suppose there's now a bit more experience in the room so there's a few more conversations so it's a bit easier so you know we're always trying to encourage boys to talk and and to share ideas and no matter what your age is because if you're in the squad now it means you're there for a reason and you got something to contribute so just trying to encourage all the young guys to to have a voice and also
make sure on the field you know if they see something go for it you know not been too hesitant few locks in a back row of Colin Grace coming over from New Zealand what have you made of him? yeah look it's it's you know having having the likes of we'll get in the quality the likes of Colin Grace will be would be massive for the group I remember when he first broke through in New Zealand he got around the all black camp pretty quickly and I suppose he've run at the time was thinking he was going to have a long career in New Zealand probably for all blacks showed plenty of potential he's had a big run of injuries as of late so I think the main thing for for Colin by the sounds it was just getting back on his feet I think he's I'm not too sure he's been playing for Canary lately in the NBC but look if we can get Colin and some of these new signings on their feet healthy then I think they'll have a lot to contribute to the group so it's an interesting one because similar to when I joined Cardiff in 2014 they're not going to join us till November so that that's challenging because you know we obviously have four or five
games before then but I think having those guys come from different environments particularly that crusaders environment that Colin's coming from is is is always helpful you see the impact Johnny McNuckle had on the Scarlet's was massive so getting those guys fit in a valve all to join us in November will be will be important and hopefully you know if we're in a good position in the competition then it will allow us to really kick on so it's a funny one the sense of we've got two or three guys still waiting to come and fill in the and the different coaches of all that one join I don't think yes I think again he joins on October I haven't met him yet I know he can for one session and Preseason before I was there and the boys said it was pretty brutal so look it's always nice I think to get people from different environments and different cultures and to be able to learn from them and what they experience and their ideas and I'll see with a new defense coach from the league back to Brown there's going to be some different ideas and thoughts there so again it's a funny one because the season starts next week and we're not
all together so it's a little bit unusual but hopefully we've got a solid foundation to hold us and good stood for the main time and and once we get everyone together all else to really push on hidden into Christmas yeah even or carol the new defense coach coming in Steph he was of course taking interim control and you have stood back into what you know an unsatiled environment off the pitch garuth you've spent time at the Ospreys you know back with a Scarlet so you've spent time at a both west Wales teams one of them we know is likely to go what have you made of it all um look I certainly enjoyed not being given in France and just not having to deal with that or hear it to be honest it was really refreshing not to see new article every day about it um I don't know um it's it's it's obviously so much unknown um and I'm in a different position from other
boys knowing them at the back end of my career so you know I know there's some real concern from the from the boys which isn't nice um and it's going to affect a lot of people it's going to affect a lot of communities and potential players um I mean I'm not even soon it's going to happen and that's my honest opinion because what what has happened in the last five or six years to show there's any decisiveness or decision-making happening like it could happen I could be wrong and things happen and I'm sure at the moment it's looking that way but I for anything we've done in the last six years nothing's happened quickly there's no we've been talking about this for so long I equally wouldn't be as surprised if we just just make a decision over that we're going to keep all four and I don't think you know I you guys might have different opinions to be but I wouldn't be surprised if nothing happens something could happen and obviously there's going to be some massive decisions um off the back of that but I'm not convinced that a decision will
be made because it might it would have been made already yeah I just think regardless of what happens right so A region's going to go there's going to be massive kickback I'm sure the local council is going to get involved which is kind of already happening the union will face a tumble pressure more than under right now and I just I'm not convinced that there wouldn't be then another U-turn it's just legal implications yeah there's just so much where there was a U-turn on the eve of it nearly happening yeah yeah 2019 so because you've been there and you've seen it yeah I have and look I understand the reasons that we're talking about it because you know I also do support the fact that some things have to change we can't along along we're trying to still raise the level of Welsh rugby and making sure it's sustainable and everyone's healthy moving forward so I understand the need to make changes um but you know everyone's fighting for for the
same thing here and you know who goes is just is all up in the air and like you said Lauren it sounds like it's going to be well it's going to be one of the West teams but how they come to that decision I don't know um I honestly feel like there was probably a part that maybe over the next last few years once they kind of initially tabled this this offer I think they'll kind of hope for maybe all that one of the regions we just fold and and everything will be simple um so I honestly don't know what to say about it because I just feel like there's so much in the air and I'm kind of sick of the whole narrative and conversation around it but I understand it's massive news because it's got so many implications on it it's fun yeah um sorry to bring it down in the conversation Lauren brought that question I don't know why right it's been in the back of my head through a scum situation nothing but that and I don't know where it is I keep thinking back to Leon and Australia that game you had it was just perfect wasn't it and I'm kind of like you're
at that place where you reminiscing about life and everything I know you had 2019 Ireland in a rain and that you know that little thing for hardly parks but there was I remember being in the hotel in Leon after that game and I was like oh my goodness like the way I was just putting a performance of a of a generation and Garth Ansken was just absolutely busted yeah it was a funny one because you know I've looked back at the game and and and realized that you know we we didn't really do too much we just did exactly what we needed to so it was a funny one because I look back at the game and so I wish I did this and that and in some of those parts but at the same time I was very glad that we just did what we needed to and it ended up becoming you know a very clinical performance we were very efficient we took our points we needed to and once we got ahead we just supplied pressure and we took the easy points on offer I suppose when you look back when I you know now get into the back of my career you look at back at these big moments and
like you said the feeling the hotel afterwards is port we had I think we had a bit of a break after that so we really got to enjoy the one at that stage my two kids were there so they walked the pitch with me and I have a couple of really special photos from the pitch and you know it would be one of my career highlights particularly in a whilst juicy and I suppose I look back at on that World Cup very fondly but particularly that game that weekend was so special I had some of my best mates in Australia there and from the UK my my dad was at the game so I had so many close mates there and to be able to kind of step up in the way that I just needed to to play a pivotal role and an important win at the World Cup was just so unique and special and I suppose I look back at that and when I went through some of the troubles I had in my career with injury you know you look back at that one going you know God was worth it to have those sort of moments and also it sort of summarises rugby in the sense that there'll be a highlight reel on YouTube that won't contain
the moments from that game and you answered yourself fundamentally didn't do anything unbelievably special the team didn't do anything special but you almost appointed everything right at the right time and in a way sometimes that's rugby isn't it? Yeah exactly and it is isn't it's you can play this fast flowing movement based game and get nothing you know for you efforts at times and and then you look at that game where we got off to a really fast start and we're clinical off a starter and then I was just about kicking points really and we got a little chip kick to Nick and the second half and we just managed to keep the scoreboard moving so that one was special that the pack really stood up and I remember I remember the fallback felt like we really got on top and we dominated rolling more work well I believe a scrum went well and we're in a really good stage at that time and I think the World Cup in France just is so special I don't know what it is so you know obviously it's been last year in France but the climb at the time is you know you awesome whether you're painting wicked stadiums air-ons having so much fun so I look back at that
World Cup in 20th and it was just an unbelievable experience and gutted it finished the way it did really because it sort of felt like we should have had another week in us and obviously Tom my duck there which is sort of you know I suppose also sums up my career to some stage and but you know what a wicked time and one I'm really proud of that I'm a huge play part of and go with Griffiths actually who's watched hundreds of World Games across the world does if you ask him to pinpoint the most complete World's performance he's seen he always comes back to that game and just to finish guys you are back and Wales are you back to kind of build your life here now are you enjoying being back yeah look it's you know we've got such a core nucleus of friends here now and I suppose you know I moved over here in the 2014 so it's almost 12 years now and I moved over as a you know 23 year old young man really and 35 with three kids had a family here
and we've built the nucleus of our life here with our mates so you know Carter feels like home so we absolutely loved France and a daughter time and in Bayon had such an amazing experience there we met some really cool people but it's it's been nice to probably slip into normal life here we certainly missed the weather in the beach that's for sure that's too far well we've been complained about that weekly but it's been nice to come back to home I suppose and not to sure we'll wind up and and where this journey will go but you know for now we see ourselves back and Wales and I suppose we'll see what happens and and what happens with life potentially post-pain career and one final thought you are one sure to wave from the towel set your towel set equal you know the towel set equal action the four is it all for towel telserley Tavis Niles Tavis Nile about Tavis yeah Alibru Liam Davis and I think that's it the time being
correct ministers don't have time so I just want to know see this I can assure you there will not be four three so I got to thanks so much again you can come back again sure thank you September's always busy whole foods market can help their September stock up event makes it easy to load your pantry and freezer with flavorful nourishing food even better there are hundreds of sales get dinner going with canned soups and veggies lean on frozen pizzas pastas and seafood everyone loves their build your own family meals feeds for for just 35 dollars stock up at whole foods market some tech presents uncertainty strikes I was surrounded the aisle and the options were closing in there were paint rollers satin and matte finish angle brushes and natural
bristles there were too many choices what if I never got my living room painted what if I couldn't figure out what type of paint to use what if I just used thumbtack I can hire a top rated pro that knows everything about interior paint easily compare prices and read reviews thumbtack nose homes download the app today one year day we just look twice the size and I'm getting that impression feels been a busy summer is it yeah yeah just trying to pack on the weight I've been doing that for as long as I can remember mine just and certainly it's just work this season the kit helps as well it's skin
tight isn't it but mongomoss says five kgs he's got what have you what have you all the more support on five kgs that's really that in his tent no I don't believe that he looks bigger man it's be huge I can see five kgs your account you only about two two or three probably is that I go up and down quite a lot but yeah I'm trying to stay a decent weight now what is what is your what's your what's your fighting weight I'll say 117 117 goes up and down a bit there what's your peak and what's like what what if you get down to some in when you get and worried 115 is when I'm if I get to 115 and like I need to start eating more again but this probably the heaviest weather been yeah the biggest weather I can't imagine ever finding an issue with eating no do you find it difficult the worst thing I hit the worst part about the job for me is eating yeah yeah I'll be like is it a struggle yeah yeah well because you have to eat decent food as well you're just I'll be around my Mrs. A's and it'll be like 10 p.m. trying to slog a chicken rice down me just before going
to bed and then having a protein shake yes not I don't enjoy it at all I did the mistake a couple of years ago with a win-walk gun just being a normal human being he walks past that oh gosh you're looking great because thanks gosh you've lost loads of weight you're looking really too many and it's face-trop and he was like yeah yeah that's the worst thing if someone tells you you've lost weight you know you've got a wise up a bit yeah yeah but it's real and it and you know it's with a purpose isn't it clearly yeah yeah obviously yeah you know the game is getting bigger and bigger isn't it people are getting bigger and bigger stronger and heavier and faster so yeah if you're a forwarder especially you have to be a certain way you you know we're playing South Africans and the Italians are big does you know everyone's big now so yeah you can't really afford to not be as big as you can and wow the dragons then heading into this season because last season even though there was much of a shift in table position I think everyone would have agreed that was a much better season for you guys yeah yeah performance wise definitely 100%
a lot better yeah and as you can say everyone can see there was a shift in performance who's just about shifting the results now I think we had five or six draws in the season the week I think three of them were at home yeah yeah yeah we easily could have won I say easily obviously tough games but we should have won them really and then all of a sudden we're a lot higher at the table and it's a different conversation isn't it so yeah it's just like this season I suppose keeping the performances on an upwards trend and you know shifting those results into wins so many games are decided by seven points of feel how do you address that in training or is a lot of it down to kind of match intensity is there much you can yeah yeah we do train scenarios where we're two points down with three minutes to go and say one point up or two points up because you know a lot more recently a lot more last season we found ourselves in those situations a big thing for us is just staying in those games where we are within seven points or we're ahead with the last 10 minutes to go
because previously we probably haven't been in those situations we've been chasing games with 20 minutes to go and stuff like that so I think for us if we can stay in games or be ahead with the last 10 minutes that's when we find ourselves and there's good situations and we can take those opportunities to win because we are training those situations a lot more now I think you've got all your dabbies before Chris yeah I think so back to back to back to back we talked about Cardiff didn't we grow last year having the kind of easier first half when you always and you've got that this year when you look at you know the average table position of the teams you're playing it's it's pretty low um a real chance to build some momentum but then you have got to get off to winning stuff yeah it's a good chance to build momentum and yeah you you say we probably have the easier first half but all the first half of the dabbies and like I wouldn't say they're easier games at all if anything they're hard they're like we the Welsh regions want nothing more than to be each other um so yeah more enjoyable
if we be in the region like would you circle dabbies and think I'm you know I don't I'm going to really be getting up easily getting up for these games yeah you do you do easily get get up the dabbies because you just want to be the other regions um we wouldn't circle them on on a calendar anything like that because we want to go for them in every game but yeah it's just a natural thing like when you're playing another another Welsh region you see it in the week after and you know we can go for this one do you know what I mean and especially for us we we want to go and win every game but the certain games obviously you believe we can we definitely can go and win um and the Welsh dabbies are definitely ones we can go after loads of recruitment last summer less this summer but it takes a while for some of those boys to bed in although you know likes to play uh and he's see flew up the blocks last season but I'd imagine by now that there's a sense of maybe a bit more stability over this summer yeah definitely like these two preceding games you've played we we we feel the two 15s for each half and and comfortably each 15 is is a full full
full depth squad now that we've got full two teams that can go out and and there's not an issue with one player gets injured you know we're struggling in that position and that has been the case still in your past maybe in the past maybe in the past we you know we have a good start in 15 a good 23 a couple injuries um and you know nothing nothing on the players or anything like that but you have young players like myself and I was young coming in to cover cover injuries when you know in other situations that probably might not have happened whereas now I think we have more even more than two 15 uh 15s that can perform in the URC really well and everyone's competing especially the new players you know like Zalla on the wing like he's I think on Janay kilos offloading everything area on new scamalf he's looking sharp um you know these new players who've got even the way outside many that are going to make a huge impact so I recently wrote an article of the website about players whilst players with coach um spent a day it's been an evening with Joe Hawkins
yeah um you're with Col de Cod you seniors now see you come on too yeah well I went I went up through the age games with this one team that I started off an under 14s went up for you coach them and then yeah yeah yeah and then went up 15 16s youth um won the dragons cup in youth and then you know they've all gone up to seniors now so I've gone up with them kind of thing and I'm doing the forwards with the seniors now I think the one thing I wanted to get across in the in the interview and I mean it's so striking spending time with Joe on the likes of you is your motivation right and correct me if it's wrong it's clearly not for money it's not for Instagram it's not even nine there's another ten for personal development it's just for the love of a community in a club yeah yeah no you don't get paid to coach Kelly got you know you go down there Tuesday Thursday night on Saturdays if you can get there and yeah you just love doing it like the boys down there class I get on them really well I've known I've grown up with a few of the boys and coach and as well I went to school with them some of them my some of my best mates um I'm doing it with
respucle used to play for the dragons as well my brother my brother's coaching the back so it's like yeah it's all just yeah everyone just let's doing it and Joey's doing it and we just want to do well really do does it by definition help you though with insight and I clearly you want you are not coaching professionals yeah and you are after coach pairs who maybe don't care that much you know I mean that's just their release but do you find the beneficial for your professional life it can be yeah like you're talking in front of big groups which helps you know in every aspect of life yeah you're analysing you know games from Caldecott and you're seeing things that you might not see when you're watching our games and stuff like that but it probably won't translate loads but I suppose there are little things within it that can help yeah we just love it yeah yeah I just love doing it yeah I've enjoyed doing it in terms of your personal rugby development you've spent some time with Wales over the last year what what do those conversations look like right and because I think over the past couple of years you've seen young players been thrown in disposed of pretty quickly
how have you been managed well pretty pretty well I would assume so you were there for the six nations yeah yeah I think one of the players got injured in the six nations and then I come into a place in but yeah I was just training with a squad learning same as the summer as well I come in before they run on tour and just training and learning which is the main thing for me right now obviously I want to be in that you know the the squads that travel and you know getting with a chance to play and but right now it's probably just being in around the learning from the best plays and Wales and stuff like that learning what the coaches want in Wales and just developing that that part those parts my game yeah and I guess Steve is pretty honest with you in that sense like look you can gain a huge amount come in you can gain a huge amount but by just watching how I'm you know being part of how we operate even if you're not part of the match this year yeah yeah it is so competitive and training as well that you kind of you have to go up another level like I probably can believe
at the start of the summer training and how hard it was but yeah you kind of just adapt to it and then you go back to your region and and you can kind of maybe a little bit of fitness long days as well like then there's such long days compared to training with your clubs because you have to do it all season the you can't get slogged every day was if you go into the summer this three four weeks of really really our training and I was a bit like well this is another level bit of a really good experience I just hope now to keep keep going in that direction kind of thing right appreciate your time lovely thank you go on the season thank you very much stay bulky and this Josh Adams following on from a theme from Ryan Woodman head coach Andy and I'm not head coach no I'm not going in that title I'm a assistant coach in all aspects of the game are you yeah except for obviously a sister coach does that mean like what they'll
so we have like a lead attack coach a lead defense coach and I am just jumping in on every aspect of the game break down defense attack so I help out all the other coaches the city handy senior correct yeah yeah and I saw the division one so decent yeah sounds to me that you're not accountable by being so everyone else can get the but it's the key net unless they're doing really well across the board yeah and I also know that I remind this is just just jump back to me the last time we had this conversation I don't know if you remember this but three or four years ago you accused another team of getting all I think you accused Penn Cloud that somebody I've got it all again all ringers in our clinics and we both got absolutely so I got terribly for my fact checking got a cues have been biased mad old mad old people bite on things I guess you know you know I mean actually one resident happy with you calling them galactic but people get mad because they care they do care yeah do you know the mean you know it's nice to see people still care about that
though isn't it it's nice people care about teams yeah yeah well there's another one of them teams this year but I ain't gonna say what they are because they know what they are and we might might get another load of luck so we'll leave her as that do you get a buzzer of it it's good they've enjoyed it I think I was asked to do it for a few seasons but I was always like reluctant to do it partly because of time as well like you know come on after two days typically a long day in training isn't it and then you gotta go down the pitch for an hour and a half and an evening like so it's just like I've got a time to do it but if I when I said I was gonna do it I wanted to do it as well like not just like dip my toe in and then can't do it in some weeks can't do it the other weeks so I thought I was gonna do it I wanted to do it properly and be there as much and I have been so far and I've really enjoyed it surprisingly isn't it actually is there such a thing as too much rugby for someone like you who's been at the top end of the game for so many years but I it's a bit corny but I generally love rugby like I watch it religiously I watch rugby. It's just a bit of a series I don't know I don't know he is Mr Rugby and he is me he is Mr
Rugby and but like NRL I got to love watching that massive inter-rugged league love watching rugby league I watch top 14 on on the TV when I saw him because they have like Sunday night nine o'clock games today watch out. Charrod's back as well and he's all over that as well. Yeah I love it so I don't think I could get enough rugby now. So Jared then when I think five players signed the season Scott CIO we've seen him here today um center LaRoum Allen. Yes. Yes. I think give us some insight on on those new guys and you've also got um Simeesi as well. Yeah Simeesi Pai Elach got back row and then Tom Mann who's a little bit lost Tom Mann's from from Tigers yet so just to touch on Audrey mentioned now LaRoum Rusta we call him Rusta. So in a bit being from the fact yeah um great athlete I think something that we needed around that midfield was probably like a bit of up and down but a
crash bang and he certainly brings out he's he's a good athlete he's fittering really well um made a good impression that was the game I don't know if you've seen it but made a really good impression he's trained exceptionally well as well so um he's a really nice addition to our midfields sort of complement of players we needed and something a little bit outside of what we are at the yard which is which is good as well. He's you don't have to play 13. Yeah. Yeah um well which makes me it drops me down the peck in order of 13 probably so um we have more options in that in that category no more um specialise in players and centre. I want to pick up on something we spoke with Gareth Anscom earlier you know he's 35 you know he conceives at the twilight of his career yeah and he's speaking about this change of mindset that he's gone to the scarlet and he's happy to be there an assistant helping role yeah you are first choice for Wales still yeah you've got the world cup on the horizon but it's also a long season with a lot of travel in your head
are you still just the only way I can exist as rugby player is full gas I'm training every week I'm available to play this week yeah or do you have to no I I generally don't know any other way you can't no no I that's where I'm wired like I'm I constantly just want to be training playing out there traveling doesn't matter if you think is after a long year short yeah I'm just in that's that's just how I am and I don't think I could be any other way and that doesn't necessarily mean I'm not willing to help in any way because no no no no no because I love sharing my experiences with bows and I've been to come in I'm at less kind of helping I'm at more like managing your oh yeah it's a managing your your boardy yeah managing everything because I understand that they're not even Jones with the same it's hard some people like it's hard when someone tells me it's like okay come out to this and I know I'm feeling okay or I'm able to do it I don't want
to I want to do it I think that's yeah that's just the way I'm like I I can't I can't sometimes I go too fast too quick does that make sense like even in rehab when I'm injured like I try and push it bit too quickly because I don't know how to take it easy so you need to be managed probably to to an element I probably need someone to take it out to my hands at times maybe go like no not that not today but I just love it too much not to say no like you know because you've also got a Champions Cup to contend with it's here which we know is a big step up and traditionally of the last few years we've seen a Welsh team reach the top eight albeit you finish six and then not be able to compete on both friends so how do you manage that I guess personally and as as a squad because on the one hand you've got bath coming in opening game yeah brilliant Anglo Welsh fixture but then you know if you're making the top eight one season that's a minimum few minutes
yeah yeah and I'm sure you ask all all four regions like we want Champions Cup rugby because you do it's very TV more revenue for the club ticket sales on the gate you play in bigger teams so all end things you want as a club and you want as a player as well I want to be playing in Franklin's Gardens I want to be bringing bath to the arms park because you know we've got big crows big sellouts and they brilliant brilliant occasions to play in but where we come and stuck a little bit is don't squad depth of course the English teams probably am French teams are better squad depth than us so it's a task for staff to manage how we build up to these games like in terms of selection wise leading up and how we play in the in the in the Champions Cup games but every competition we're in as a club I can always speak for Cardiff we want to compete in everything so I know when we come to Champions Cup rugby we go in for it like it doesn't matter what we're playing like we're going for it then we're gonna we're gonna put our best team possible out there
it's for sure I said open game it's not actually it's your first home game what bath yeah you've got things to weigh the first Champions Cup game but first home game is bath yeah some boys wouldn't know that some boys wouldn't know when when you're playing who you're playing yeah I don't know I can tell you the first six yeah that's just because you need to you need that yeah yeah better that but I just like to know and I like to think about like how things would look as in I know we've got a five day turnaround between Northampton and Sharks so like how does training look that week I'm do I have two days off and set a one or do we do captain drunkers a five day turnaround do you enjoy it with your with our young family now do you still enjoy the travel or is that the harder part of it it certainly become more difficult yeah I personally it's off course I still have gone away with the boys of course you do they know like it's it's great crack and you get experience amazing places playing some fantastic stadiums
and it's everything you'd ever wanted to do when you would like want to play rugby but when your kids get older especially and they ask how long you're going to be gone for or when you're coming back or and then you're just saying are they missed you today I like you know they were if they got a bit upset for something they were like crying few day that's hard you know I don't I don't like that part of it but you know they're too young to understand but they'll eventually know that I'm doing the role for that minute yeah yeah um to loop his farletals here again this season yeah you won't hear this but just spoken to Corey Domachowski who just said that go yeah well it's just in ten minutes with him he's a character yeah it's a legend of course obviously he's left but you know he just raised to loop a farletale as the greatest place ever played yeah and I'm sure if you ask 90% well yeah of the card if team does say the same thing yeah why because obviously what is achieved already as a player but presence can't
some people have presence naturally he does like you can stand in a team I'd love not saying anything and you just think your chances are winning go up like just because he's just because he stood there I guess on the pitch you haven't seen enough yeah you are no no no no I'd love I'd love to have him out there much much much more this year he's had rotten luck as an e with injuries like he'd get over an injury two games in he'd pick up another one and then that keep him up for a period of time and he's had rotten luck with it so I'm hoping fingers crossed everything that you know when he gets back on the field now and he's fit in healthy that he can get run a game together and and just stay on the park really because like I said him just standing in the circle like him I promise you him just train him being round other boys they'll train better just because he's there Corey saying he can literally do everything he can he can literally do everything which for number eight and that's not just respect the forwards but like eight like freak athlete
still moves terrifically well like off-floor pass vision talk like complete rugby player tobi like and very rare you see players world class and things good there are other things very rarely you see you know players be like at exceptional level in a lot of them categories and tobi is so we're very lucky to have to be why have you pulled the short straw to wear that shirt today today I know I would have like the 150th anniversary shirt today we should explain a describe it to all listeners it's made a bit of a bang it's a commemorative one to standably as well it's nice yeah it's a celebrate 150 years you're rich it's a based on original design yeah all black with a white skull on a middle I'm told that the parents objected so the kids been seen with lawless sea-faring men so that that's why it changed that's why they ditch the pirate the pirate logo it looks great don't it looks lovely I think that's one of the nicest kids we've got it forever at so I think it went down a treat as well I think it's all dope pretty fast as well yeah I need to make more
we this is this is weird the the whole barn is where empty yeah we're waiting for fuel it with so that I mean you were being ultra polite no but um well cup yeah big year long year well cup years yeah but bigger and for you clearly there's a richer association without tournament yeah you know it's nice to be if I had the opportunity or selected you know a lot of things depending on that but you know to be in a category of gone to three world cups then those should be my third and to be in a category of players we've got to represent their country three world cups you know is fantastic is some unbelievable players there and also what what makes you think of when you get if if you ever have the opportunity to do three and if I do as well it's like some it's difficult to stay at a top level for a long period of time so I'm quite proud of the fact that I've been playing for wheels now 10 years this year so you know just to be there and stay there is
is an achievement in itself so I'm quite proud of the fact that you know you can you can get cupped because you have a break you have a year or you have you know a run of good games and you can get cupped and deservedly so but the real challenge is like maintaining that level and then being seen and selected as an international player consistently over the years so you know injuries form everything but it doesn't matter who you are you play for you love turbulent times where you play well you don't you play all right to get it you come back fit it'll always go like that the more you are but to stay in the in the middle where you could just keep chipping away or what you know you're good at and keep improving at the things you need to get better at and have belief in yourself that you'll get to where you need to be at the end I'm quite proud of that because at times I think I could be done you but you know to have the mental resolve really to go through ups and downs and keep getting better and keep one and keep having a hunger to get better as well like I don't think I'll stop looking to improve from if I'm a tyrant Saturday I'll come in Monday still trying to get better that's just a way out. And yeah and to get re-selected
yeah because there has been a conveyor belt of wing as we've seen young students come in and it's me you've seen you know Lewis in and out blemaries been there but that just spurs you aren't. Of course it does and I know competition gets the best out to me as well so when we have new guys in and we're all pushing each other like I know that gets the best out of me and I'm sure we'll get the best out of them as well but we need that like we need we need we need to be able to compete with each other for this for the for the shirt for the place in the squad because you know we're not we're not a massive nation so the more we can bring the best out of each other that's only going to benefit us so yeah and just finally on card if before we let you go you have been the region of the last few years been on an upward trajectory of turns you know tight losses into tight wins like I said made six having just lost your coach last year so what does progression look like for this squad you mentioned maybe what the centres bring that you were lacking but in terms of what corneals' messages
how do you get better yeah it's a good question there's clearly areas where we probably weren't as strong as we'd like to have been last year I think towards the back end of the year maybe our our like phase attack in general like our flow of our attack probably didn't didn't go as well as we'd like our defence group I thought throughout the season I think our defence was was a strong point of us last year but around that sort of transition how we can put pressure on teams much quicker I think that's an area we sort of looked at we've had downbound and obviously come in as well he's looking at that sort of area I just mentioned in the transition stuff which is huge part of the game now massive and I tell you every team will be putting a lot of time into that transition sort of part of the game because it's so important so certainly around that area I think will be has been a key area of like focus for us
so our final guest has arrived on time in the barn somewhere you've spent a lot of time the past few on the rest dark places in here yeah sort of behind you for now because what should we do not train here no no well to be leagued on no no so I mean you've sort of moved from you and into league yeah but clearly you are still very much informed when it comes to the women's game wxv starting on Friday South Africa exciting yeah I think it's a great opportunity and we as of employees South Africa for a fair few years now I think it's a well-matched opposition I think these four games are coming up at wxv got South Africa first then USA and then two Japan games I think where wheels are at in regards to development I think this is four games that are great opportunities to see where wheels are at South Africa going to bring a very physical dominant match but I think that's a great strength of wheels too so I think it'll be very
interesting to kick that off are they four winnable games for wheels different you know you look at a six nations and you know they're not all winnable given the gap between some nations are these winnable for sure then being honest I really think so you know Al-Qaeda did an interview this week and she said that she's gone in for all four wins and I do think they are achievable each game brings its own challenge but I think if wheels get it right to get the detail right and I think they're achievable however if you get it wrong then you're coming up of the other end again I think it's just a real testament now to see where wheels are at and I think whether results have gone the last few years recently I think it's really important to see that you know they do get those wins in broad strokes where have things not gone right for the past two seasons I think there's just been a lot of change obviously we're shone in coming in there's a lot of pressure on picking up a new role you know we've seen how many youngsters he's brought into the squad obviously the pathways
incredible to have that available like you know when I was younger that wasn't available to us so that is brilliant I think it's a lot of pressure on these youngsters just to step up you know we know wheels haven't got the best strength in depth in regards to us as a nation and I think as well you know back when we first went professional as years ago we were ahead of everyone else because we had that step ahead whereas now people have caught up so I think you know are we fit enough are we disciplined enough and they're the questions that I'd hope are they've got right over this preseason and like I said the games are coming up it's a great match I think it is a great match they're going to be great matches and they're great opposition to see where wheels are at. Yeah quarter band overtaken by now giving wheels are currently 13th in the world rankings but talking about their younger's coming through looking at the teams they're in lockwood setting at nine she actually won young wheels women's play of the year last night Courtney Keith
taking the main prize but Syrians alongside Kira Bevin at 10 which is probably the top line when you expected to see Kira sat in at fly half I think obviously with 40 Kili power been injured out with hamstring you can see Kira you know she is the most experienced player in that squad at the moment and you look at the team she again like she's been around for so long she's an extremely experienced so I'm more than you know confident that she'd be able to step up in that role it's obviously an interesting combination because they're both fighting for the same shoot you know Kira said this week that you know her priority is done at nine and wanting that nine shoot and you've got to give it to Sarah and you know she come in as a youngster but she's taking every opportunity that's been thrown at her I think again for this game it suits someone like Sarah in because of her attacking threat that she's got she's you know real threat around the break down and I think a times where South Africa will get a bit tired she'll see opportunities around that area so I'll be very
surprised if we don't see that but I can understand why you know she's someone you'd look for for that kind of tempo element but I think yeah it's a challenge obviously that nine ten combination when you're both from us and you're both fighting for the same shoot Lions next year I wouldn't I wouldn't do it Kira on a personal level with Lions next year if playing ten having that versatility is something she's trying to develop well of course you used to know the string to bow isn't it it's another thing that she can offer you know she's worked hard on her kicking for porcelain last few years again you look at a team sheet when you're making decisions or something you can be looking forward to be like oh we can rely on your here she offers the cover at ten it's quite a smart decision if it's something that she can you know step up and be able to perform at just at those crunch times where you know the game I break down that's what we're really able to see if that combination works so looking at the team he's an oymon fullback single ten seven thing of them the way in cutie-keet Freyabale Amy Williams first cat
pull though she did play against the barbers and points she played against the barbers we spoke to the half-backs mazy Davis prefered to go into the umperes of lucid I think we saw that coming yeah in recent years Kelsey Jones triple ought to met Katherine George Evans and Kate Williams Alice can't the brainy king to be fair it's pretty balanced in terms of youth and experience you know there's it's a really big name left out though if you look like Jasmine Joyce and her Jones backs in that sense not even named in the team so I think it is I'll take you George yeah thank you George on the bench because it's interesting that you look at now key rest at 10 and then it's still sticky on the bench with Kaylee Binnjad um I think Amy Williams is someone that I'm excited to see this weekend it can be seen in the barbers game that she's shoved as that electric like electric pace she comes from football so she's got a good left puttner I think if she's got opportunity to get the ball early enough on the week on Freyabale I think that'll be an exciting one to see and just answer that figure to try the review really
I mean how to what extent you tailor your game to sort of suit their power game or then I think when I think of the South African women's team I do think of powerful ball carriers yeah and I think that always been in previous years you knew you're going to be matched up front with South Africa um I think again Wales's game plan could be to try and tie them out initially um you know their attack is very rogue in the sense that they just you can't really plan too much because you don't know what they're going to throw you in regards to attack but you always know they're going to be physical so I think wheels coming out on top just need to be disciplined need to be very accurate and I think if you know they can look to move the ball a little bit more and get their backs moving I think they'll be able to exploit some areas into these fast-wingers hands on the edge um you know you've got Lisa at full back again very experienced again go a great kick on her um so it'll be interesting to see how she goes on the weekend but you've got two very very fast-wingers um they'll be great to see if we can get their ball in their hands really I think
uh for our listeners it's sort of quite important for us to just as is often the case sort of pop a couple of bubbles in terms of preconception or the women's game you know we've learned that Canada for example much stronger than women's game than men's game South Africa there is a point of difference between the women's game and the men's game South Africa uh clearly neglected for decades it's also interesting that the men's game in South Africa has predominantly been based on white Afrikaans and it's part of the growth of the men's game in recent years is because they've opened up the doors literally to a whole new democrat graphic of people. Interesting the women's game predominantly has been a black African sport in the eastern cape where sea cleases from port Elizabeth etc and I had a really interesting conversation yesterday with a few people in the no Lynn Cantwell who is an absolute legend of the game who worked for a couple of years as head of strategic performance force of African rugby she's back with Ireland now
and I think the main point she and many others have made is yes four years ago in Wales Pacifico South Africa were a developing nation at best Wales were miles ahead of South Africa you better be aware that South Africa are going to grow an insane amount of the next few years it's changing at school level these big schools pal etc are now offering scholarship for young girls the potential for growth just piggybacking the springbok brand which is so powerful in South Africa now that South Africa inside this arriving now having gone toe to toe with you will say we'll be arriving here it's not culturally in their mindset to come as favourites like the box would yeah the box would come you think they're favourites South Africa has got a lot of transition to do but they know they come into Wales and they can win I couldn't agree more I think that we've got to remember the opportunities that South Africa like where they come from the opportunity that they've
had in comparison to Wales like they are training for years on the back pictures of back and beyond they've had to turn up and they've had to graft tirelessly you know I'd be fortunate to know and play with quite a lot of them since leaving the programme and the insight that had on where they come from and what brings them together is just their culture and I think I agree with you even that there are two Fiji wins even New Zealand recently they let us fixture that was a great game for them yeah and that result for them is epic and I went toe to toe exactly so I just think that we can't underestimate them I think this is probably going to be their best form that they've been in obviously had a lot of game time in recent fixtures so they're in a great position was obviously this is going to be Wales's first fixture throughout the preseason so if I'm being really honest I don't know how the result will go it's achievable when like we discussed if Wales get the detail right but you can't underestimate South Africa I think they are going to
all guns blazing they're going to give you a very physical dominant battle but like I said in regards to form I think they're in the best place they've been. How have you with Wales seen any signs of a transition from a game that was completely reliant under Yohan Kaniyum on a set piece to a game that has more strings with bow and I'm not even claiming that's what Wales are trying to do I think many of us observers have seen that you know the backline has struggled for three or four years have you seen any changes am I wrong there and do you think the way Wales need to move forward in the shawling is more of an all court game or should they still rely on that set piece parity if not necessarily dominance? I think the difference is is that Wales is set piece is always a strength of the game and at that time where Yohan Kaniyum was involved the playing group was very different and even if you just look at now just the team sheet this weekend as an
example the senior players to youth is again very very different so I think what the youth are bringing through may offer a different strength to what as a senior group have been brought up around I think the game the women's game has developed massively with there's a lot more skills set on show there's a lot more flair there's a lot more confidence to be able to try new things whereas before yes it was very structured you know this is exactly what you wanted to do the game plan was very clear and I think with a large portion of Chowlin pushing these path to girls coming through and the youth I think it's you can't put push them much pressure on okay well yeah we're going to rely on set piece when unfortunately the girls aren't have a go that experience behind them obviously coming up with Chowlin coming in we had to give him some grace period with seeing how we can work with but I think now they've had enough time for up preseason I think it's a good balance between
yeah strength and set piece but back in flair as well like I said we've got incredible fast wingers can we see that on the weekend I think we've done yeah I think we've done thanks for coming for you pleasure thank you Joy there yeah good you ready come again happy I'll see you next week I think but you two need to I mean we do need to form the audience you are a certain flexler with a sister I am indeed can you use my brother you mean yeah flexler is your brother um I think I you know I just think you know to need to bring some kind of insight for us on just for me for dietary if I need to start bulking up because a lot of the conversation our today has been about Ryan Woodman learn to bulk you're the person who can bring a little bit of insight to that what's the protein like at this minute my diet is not great no I'll admit I mean I'm speaking about myself more as if I was a professional right be better than a 45 right next time on a meal plan I want a meal plan what you're eating every day I should explain who flex Lewis is I think most people know flex Lewis is I don't know no well we as a line did a big piece of him because you know he hasn't had as much
um like you know coverage just good we're at my mark coverage is what he does do from his success tell just tell our audience then so I'm going to do it because come on so he's um seven times Mr Olympia bodybuilder smashed record smashed dancewhatsnickers record um and yeah he's competed he's living in the states now he lives in Las Vegas he's been over there for a few years absolutely smashed the ceilings in regards to what he could have achieved and what he come from it's come from nothing but hard graft is that graft yeah absolute graft and unbelievable graft you know come from a little town in Wales um become from a really hardworking family um you know we weren't gifted with financially gifted it wasn't like oh we had you know we had incredible money behind him it was all from graft and he's slept on sofas for years he come from the very bottom to work the very top so um yeah he deserves all the success he's had and we'll put a lot of pressure on us come and behind him to be like right this is what we're striving to become
but I watched the video with him the other day and he is equally as proud of you as like he made a point of saying how how he sees all those kind of qualities in you as well yeah well I come from a great leader you know I mean I I'm very fortunate that my siblings had them to look up to and be able to support me um and we should mention Locke as well the third sibling his question rugby in the USA or he'd never forgive me you'll be going to DM later you'll be going to DM not exactly yeah Luke again worked incredibly hard um made across winnowate over to the states to study again all from graft had to really work hard to again get get get get into the university out there and study and it's it's very very tough to be able to secure a court in order out there and also create a rugby club environment where it's not their first sport um I was fortunate enough last summer to go out and play for the Lions we courtes I played sevens for the women's team and then we
which is a really nice moment as a family that we won the national championship together so we both got to lift the trophy so it's a really cool moment to be able to see the work he's done there at the club and then be able to win that together and uh it was straight on the family WhatsApp group.
