过去无量无边阿僧祇劫以前，有位国王名叫迦步，统领阎浮提内的八万四千个国家，迦步王有两万个夫人，却没有儿子。于是，国王祭祀神灵祈祷能够拥有一个儿子。多年之后，他最大的夫人终于生了一个太子，名叫栴檀。栴檀太子后来继承王位，成为转轮圣王，统领四天下。看到国势强盛，人民富庶，圣王舍弃世间生活而出家修道，最后得以成佛，号为栴檀。
