Aviation Training Tip: The 5 C's of Lost Procedures

Oh, and one more thing. Loss procedures. If a pilot ever is to get lost on a cross-country flight, here she should remember and perform the five Cs. Memorize these. These are the five Cs of getting lost. See, here we are. Well, no, where are we? First one is climb. To a higher altitude for better visibility of your surroundings. Get up there. Maybe you just can't see what the next point is. You can't remember exactly where you're going, but if you get up a little bit higher, you see a landmark, you see an airport, you see something that helps you to orient yourself. The next C is conserve. conserve your fuel, your fuel flow. Lean it out. Don't be burning way too much fuel because you don't know how long you're going to be lost for. Don't lean it out. Obviously, so much that you kill the engine or anything like that, but

2:10conserve some of your fuel. Lean that. Make sure you add a little call. Ask for assistance from ATC or other pilots on CT. If you can get a whole AATC, they're obviously going to be very helpful. If you can't get a whole AATC for a reason, you just have bad regional radio service. You can try to talk to other pilots on the common traffic advisory frequency in the area. Confess. This is probably a big one. Probably one of the biggest things. Confess to yourself and to AATC that you are lost. Pilots can be kind of prideful sometimes and they don't want to confess that they've made a mistake or that they've gotten themselves lost. You need to confess it. It's not necessarily that you need to say it out loud per se, but you need to confess it to yourself like, ah, screwed up. I'm lost. Let's get this figured out. And then comply. Complied with any instructions given by ATC. I don't know why you wouldn't comply with instructions. You're lost. You don't know where you're going. You're asking ATC for help and then you're not listening to their advice. I don't know why you wouldn't comply. But anyways, that's just it's one of the five C's. All right. Climb, conserve, call, confess, comply.
