Avalanche lay an egg on home ice against Pittsburgh Penguins | DNVR Avalanche Postgame

About this episode

The Avalanche couldn't get a save didn't play meaningful defense and saw their offense quit halfway through. A dissapointing night and a miss opportunity to grow their division lead.

Just think you could have done anything else with your Monday night Welcome in to the DNB on postgame show live from the Toyota lounge a Losers lounge to not be there Got back The dealerships J Mike and Roodle coming to you Have's lose seven to two the Pittsburgh penguins in the worst game of the season That was brutal That was a waste of a night Yep, that was That was tough to sit through Not not about a lot of fun Even the first period which we'll get to and I think there are some redeemable factors of the first period at least but certainly the second and third periods is just I don't know that I have a single good thing to say about periods two and three in this game

I'm sure there's one or two examples you could pinpoint that I'm just blanking on at the moment But it's not many it felt like the kind of game Were the abs just quit and we haven't really said that a whole lot this season so Really disappointing on home ice to get that kind of effort and Just the lack of pushback like what we'll rant about it. I'm sure but it just felt like they They didn't punch back at all and frankly Pittsburgh was kind of begging them to for a while Yeah, I'd Pittsburgh did not do anything special in this game frankly Even to build their initial lead. I don't think they did anything special This was the abs beating themselves in every way imaginable Topped the bottom in the lineup through the course of the whole game They were not competitive enough Again, we'll talk about the first period but certainly in the second and third periods the as we're done They decided they were done with this hockey game is what it is On one hand

These games happen probably five ten times a year even to the best teams in the NHL On the other hand You are in a playoff race One that you're only in because of the games you took off earlier in the season And you didn't show up For at least 40 minutes of this hockey game you just straight up did not show up I'd like to chalk it up to the fluke But coming off of a game where you didn't really have your a game either it's just It's not a great trend and obviously feels like a major missed opportunity you you got An unexpected Dallas loss to Utah tonight and you had a chance to give yourself a little bit of slack kind of makeup for Some of what's been lost here with the cushion which is obviously greatly dwindled over the last month or so Yep, a missed opportunity that game is massive on Wednesday night It was always going to be the biggest game of the regular season to this point true

But the the pressure looms that much more now It's just tough. It's tough the way this game played out. It's tough the way You wanted to feel about the avalanche and if the abs win tomorrow then you'll forget this game extremely quickly Honestly, you should forget this game extremely quickly regardless But it would make it a lot easier to do if the abs win in their next game I guess we'll do a 60 second rundown A goal and then another goal First period starts out a bit rough First shot scott wedged wood faces is a very weak spinning backhand for malkin that beats him because he's cheating over You think the abs are going to be able to get the reset because Nathan McKinnon just walks down and scores and makes it a one one game And you think all right weird start. Let's move on with her lives The abs defense and goal tending proceeds to completely poop themselves for the rest of the game You blink and it's four one in the first period you get a fluky goal at a Brent Burns to make it four two And despite a period where you probably were they better

I mean not probably you were the better possession team at five on five doesn't matter Because you can't stop for making the gargantuan mistakes And then the rest of the game the abs frankly didn't show up for Pittsburgh ads two in the second one in the third you get to your seven two final on a night that was just pathetic for the Colorado avalanche Yes, accurate. It was that bad I I guess we'll try and go chronologically here at least a little bit The first period mechanically any offensive zone was actually pretty good for the abs They had some good power plays they were getting shots of the net I think they ended up with 18 or 19 shots on goal in the first period They beat she loves twice and force she loved to make some good saves That's quality work in the offensive zone you were doing the things you needed to do in the offensive zone to set yourself up for a win

But you can't be good offensively and then play your worst game of the year both defensively and a net that's not The offense can't carry that Yeah, we'll have plenty of time to talk goal tending and get into some of the defensive miscues that seem to be More and more persistent these days I don't know how you just lose a fucking dude in front of the net as often as the abs have over the last month I'll say that it's yeah confounding a problem for sure for the avalanches their net front defense or rather their lack thereof But I think what made this game particularly annoying as I agree with you this There's a different world and where this is like a four four four three type game you gave up some dumb softies But you were you were creating opportunities you were putting the puck on net And then you come out in the second period and you just do nothing you don't punch back whatsoever. Yep It's a two-goal game at that point You're down to right Typical hockey scenario team is down to

What a game is supposed to look like when a team is down to in the second period is they just all out blitz the other team with offense Especially at home especially when you have Nathan McKinnon and Kayle McCarrer You're just throwing pucks at the net at that point and hoping for good things to happen Especially the way she loves looked in this game Yes, he was making a lot of saves rebounds were everywhere everywhere And you follow up what was a 19 shot first period with a second period where the abs must have four shots on goal I For so many reasons and this is where my brain is like melting and I'm struggling Because okay, maybe Pittsburgh locked it down defensively for you That's going to reduce some of your shots But you should still be dominating that possession game and firing pucks at the net But instead Despite the way you played in the first period you decided to get Ultra cute for the entire second period or trying to make six extra passes You're trying to dangle through guys instead of just throwing pucks on net on the guy that has shown He's looking a little bit shaky back there and Pittsburgh was having some puck management issues themselves

They had some really bad turnovers in the neutral zone like there were opportunities Early in that second period to get a goal to get some juice going And the abs just never stepped up to the plate no they did nothing in the second period To earn a win in this game and they did nothing in the third period They'll let's be honest the game was over at the start of the third point It's so far at a reach and you're so far frustrated. It's just a matter of let's get out of here Let's stay healthy and not put ourselves at even more of a Yeah, of a loss, you know going into that huge game against Dallas, but to To lay an egg the way that they did on home ice It was just it was so disappointing Especially in the lack of pushback like you can lose a game. You're gonna have weird games You're gonna have off-nights in that But to never even punch back I felt was the most disappointing especially given the circumstances you are in an incredibly tight division race No excuse. There's no excuse for that

You can find reasons like if the abs have showed up in the first period and just got cooked And you're like okay, they clearly just didn't have anything tonight But you showed up in the show period and played quality hockey in one of the three zones. Do you feel like that's And again, I do think the injuries are a factor. I think It's not an excuse for the effort you gave tonight But missing like in in missing land of sky you're going to feel missing two of your top six forwards. Yeah I know Pittsburgh didn't have crossby they came out and they played fine. I understand all of that context but In some ways this felt like the abs Didn't get that that late goal in the first and they were just kind of like yeah, I guess it's just not our night Yeah, and is that like where you're missing the presence of your captain? You're definitely missing the presence of your captain Full stop. I we've had this conversation before this season, but the abs Look Gabel and escog would not tolerate that second period

That I know for sure He would take a look and say not good enough and I think the abs understand that I don't think they're Unaware of the situation, but sometimes you just see them without Their emotional center of Gabel and escog get into these funks of hey It's not going our way Instead of Readjusting the mindset and getting back to work they just kind of Fly down the tunnel into into the abyss at times with their mentality without landy helping that but that's where I'd like to see more from I mean you're a decade in the league at this point McKinnon and I don't think he played poorly obviously he scored tonight, but like He's just not that guy. Yeah, I get it. He's not the raw raw dude He can't be the guy who's the emotional center. He's the guy who's gonna live up here and down here It's all highs and lows with him Who can be that guy Nelson Does he have that kind of juice? I think it's kale macar really is the guy that that needs to be

I just have a he I'm sure he's different behind closed doors, but he's just so mellow mannered to me I have a hard time seeing him be that guy. Yeah, I understand what you're saying, but I do think it is him And the other factor there with the injuries is Injuries not an excuse for playing this poorly But when you look at a guy where you're missing like Leckinon it's a guy who can give you energy You're looking for a guy who is missing like Colton regardless of his execution this year a guy that can give you energy and When the abs needed energy No one stepped up to the plate and gave him the energy they needed in this second period not the top guy all the way down to the gold tender You hoped it might be After the kind of flukey burns gold that could spark something, but it just it didn't seem to for whatever reason Yeah, they I don't know I don't know what happened in the offensive zone in the second and third period the abs just said nah Just stop it with the injuries guys. It doesn't matter. You're missing two of your top six forwards. It doesn't matter Not a factor. It definitely matters

Again, I'm not saying it's an excuse, but You have to look at the reality of who the Colorado Avalanche are And I think it's fairly safe to say the team we saw tonight is not the Colorado Avalanche At all frankly, it's their worst game of the season. So if you want to judge them by their worst game of the season then Yeah, I guess they're going to lose out the rest of the year and the playoffs are going to they're going to get swept but You also can't judge them by the best games of the season the 9-1 win against Edmonton early in the year also not reality You're going to have nights that are just so far from the mean but yep In some ways you want to say throw them out, but it's tough to at the stage of the season and I understand that I If this was a hockey game where The abs weren't in a playoff race. I don't think anyone would care about it at all I think they would just go that was horrible. Let's move on with our life But because they are three points ahead of Dallas who also lost tonight by the way

The abs didn't lose any ground despite playing horribly So they caught a little bit of a break there seemingly important context for all of this yeah Arguably Dallas lost to a worse team in Utah than the abs lost to in Pittsburgh based on the standings Um It's just not Don't make Causations where there might be some correlation Yeah, the abs have lost three of their last four games. That's bad. That's not good enough And that does not mean they're about to blow the entire season and lose the playoffs They could they also could not do that they could win a Stanley Cup I also think it's important to remember that you just happen to be In an incredibly unique scenario where you have two teams on potentially generational type point runs Yep You would have a 20-point lead if you were in the Pacific with this loss having lost three or four You would have a 20-point lead in the division Yeah, the two best teams are in the same division this year and it's close. That's unfortunate. That's bad luck

puts way more pressure on you. Yeah, unfortunately You blew an opportunity tonight if you're the Colorado avalanche and there's a lot of reasons why that happened beyond just A really disappointing effort in the second and third that we'll get into in a minute, but When you look at this first period I just don't think The avs deserved the four two score like obviously they deserved it as a complete team But the avs offensively didn't deserve a four two score line in that period it When you need to save from your goal tender when you need your defense to not make the biggest mistake possible I think it's hard to put that on your forwards You threw three picks sixes. Yeah, like it's just You had catastrophic mistakes and you know credit to the pens they They capitalize on every single one of them. That's very opportunistic of them Yeah, totally Pittsburgh finished. Well, I mean, but don't just shoot yourself in the foot. Yeah four This is executive times and it's a completely different game potentially. I

Right, there's just There's nothing to say on the front of like oh well the avs need to play better. Obviously Obviously their defense has to play better. Obviously their goal tending has to play better It's just a fact of You're sitting here and do you believe they will play better And maybe you don't believe that they'll play well enough to win xyz. Well fine fair enough But if you believe that this is the standard of the Colorado avalanche then we just haven't been watching the same team Like I don't know what else to tell you Anyway, we do need to take our first break of the show So let's shout out some of our sponsors and get you a new standard of health when it comes to common spirit Hey athletes we gain warriors and anyone who loves to move for those experiencing any sports injury or chronic pain The common spirit mountain region is home to an incredible sports medicine program Including their new sports center common spirit health in parker this team of qualified and passionate provider specializes in diagnosis treatment and prevention of sports related injuries for all athletes

I do think the fact that they pay Dallas on Wednesday I think they were probably looking ahead a little bit in the second and third period of this game Think they said ah we didn't we didn't make a competitive in the first ah we didn't score in the first five minutes of the second period Ah, let's just go beat Dallas on the next one There's probably some human nature and that even before you come into this game just This is a big one, but it's not the big one. Yeah

And like I'm disappointed that that's where they ended up in this game. I said it's a bad approach and a Division race this tight. It's also probably a little bit of human nature if we're being real Yep, and you can tell yourself I don't look at it out of this, but you hear the noise Everybody knows I mean how many times Do we find ourselves just casually segueing to the matchup with Dallas pregame throughout the watch along like it's it's in the back of everybody's minds Okay, let's talk about the goalies Oof Do we have to uh, yeah, unfortunately um If there is a conversation about who you're going to run in the playoffs neither goalie did any help for themselves in this game I mean they both were just awful I Scott Wedgewood gives up three on five goals and gets pulled and McKenzie blackwood comes in and immediately gives up another goal and goes on to give up multiple other soft ones like Just horrific

I think you can make an argument that five of those goals Could have been maybe should have been at least four Yeah, I mean The later ones on black would I care a little bit less because the game's over anyway like whatever But Certainly the first goal is just not good enough from from Wedgewood. It was like six on 14 shots or whatever it was yeah The it was it was just bad and then yeah the apps have defensive breakdowns and don't worry we'll get into the defense to but Given up three on five or six is like bad for a shootout Those are bad numbers if they were all breakaways like Yes The abs defense did not help them but you need saves in hockey games if the abs get one more save just one more save out of Scott Wedgewood This is a two-one game and we're going down a completely different path now what happens in that game who knows

But they just did not get a single meaningful save in this game And a tough part is you pull in hoping you get a spark and it does blackwood argue it was here allowed even softer goals. So it was just It was one of those nights where everything seemed to compound on you. You really didn't do a thing well outside of if you want to Split hairs and say the offense looked decent in the first period. That's great. You still went down in the intermission down multiple goals So whoop do you do yeah, but It was so catastrophically bad. I'm almost inclined to chalk it up as a throw it away type night Like a you through seven interceptions as a quarter back type game. It was so bad Both of them have to like It full stop just go okay burn the game tape go for a walk in the morning That was my worst game of the season. We're gonna move on Live our lives and continue being good goal tenders. I mean you kind of have to really across the board here Yeah, like I don't want to segue I guess too early in the show and to big picture moving forward type stuff, but

It's a seven two game. We're gonna be all over the place I mean that's To be honest with you like I'm more I get it. It hasn't been trending great for a while now So that's not to be dismissive of their struggles. They have not been playing great hockey At least to their capability of hockey for a while, but yeah, this was so far from the norm that I just I don't I don't put a ton of stock into it. At least I mean you come on you give up six to Dallas and a very similar scenario Okay, well that'll change the tune pretty quickly, but I really don't put a ton of stock into this last handful of games I know they've lost three and four and and you can say I'm being too optimistic and maybe you're right I don't know But the Edmonton game Nathan McKinnon gets thrown out of that game. Who knows what that game looks like. It's a one-goal game The apps don't have to kill five minutes of a made-up penalty the game is just a completely different scenario The little pet game. Yeah, frustrating Also The abs are the highest scoring team or one of the highest scoring teams in the league

Certainly the highest scoring team at five on five Man tonight where they just missed all the nets Okay, you live with that It's annoying, but you live with it and then you have tonight where This one is not like the others, right? This one is just no excuses You were horrible for at least 70% of the game It's your worst showing of the season by far basically across the board And you take those three things and I get that three losses in four games is frustrating especially in the situation But when you look at how those three losses are made You don't really have any overarching problems across all of them and you're like this is a problem for the Colorado Avalanche that is building and something that they can resolve You just have three games that are Something happened you failed to execute and absolute disaster and and it's a lot easier in my mind to look at those three and say I can wash away most of the things from these obviously they have to be better But there's not like oh no if this keeps happening it's a problem because

The abs goal tending is not going to continue to be this bad It's statistically you came in with the best tandem in the league. Yep And one game does not suddenly make them the worst I don't like it. It did look like it too But you know you're not going to have a nightmare nights every single night You wouldn't be one of the best teams in the league if that's how it goes And I do think that context matters of what you're hitting on is It's alarming I guess in some sense that you seem to be all over the place in terms of your execution at all levels But it's not like You know you've had a week of the goalies looking like this or you know the defense. Yeah Although trending the wrong direction of late I There's an interesting conversation here because Chad is talking about it too And I promise we will get to the D in all of the problems it had it did suck I'm not trying to cover up for the D here but How much is us as viewers recognition of the defense being horrible

The fact that you're not getting a save how many nights Did we say oh the D wasn't actually that bad because wedge would stop the breakaway or two or because black would made one great save on a penalty kill Where if that puck had gone in oh now the D's a problem I mean, I think it's fair at all factors in nobody makes a defense look better than a hot goalie true enough That's absolutely the the facts of the matter Um, I do just throw that out there that you do need at some point If you are going to be a true contender in these types of games You kind of need your goal tender to put the team on his back and come up with that Big momentum swinging type save that you know the the type of save that just gives you energy and you build off of it and it just hasn't been there a very simplistic way To look at a hockey game you have your offense you have your defense and you have your goal tender On any given night you need at least two of those three things to show up

And it both themes are playing well. It's who gets all three to show up Tonight the abs had half of one of those things show up And that was their offense. It's not winning hockey. No, not by any stretch of the imagination Would you ever expect to win a hockey game if the abs go into it and and it looks like that So Yeah, I will say if we're giving the offense some credit And I mean this factors into every other rant we've had about the power play all year That's another area where it feels like that's kind of an opportunity they take a couple of dumb penalties And really outside of that second power play you just don't do a whole lot with it to give yourself an opportunity I guess there was one more decent one later on but Yeah, I mean, I didn't hate the power play today, but obviously it didn't score and The power play has actually been quite a bit better post-elympic break I mean, it kind of had to be it did and I don't think

You know, we're not sitting here talking about how the abs power plays their biggest issue on the team anymore It wasn't good enough today, but I don't think that's a power play sequence that you come away with saying oh god burn it down No, I agree, but I feel like if you were going to swing things on a night where you go down you give up for early goals Feels like everything's compounding That's how you find a way to chip back into this game and I mean it's certainly a conversation of the abs second period and I'm just going away That's what I mean like it just as a whole for 20 minutes decided to put it in coast mode Yeah, from from that perspective I I don't again. I don't know that there are genuinely any positive things you're taking from the second and third period of this game I you have to look at every single facet of it and go Regardless of how I feel about it regardless of how you feel about it chat the Colorado avalanche need to look in at that second and third period and say that is the worst we can play

We need to make that the absolute worst we play this season and never do something like this again Is this a burn the tape kind of night or is this a show it on replay type of like Fulia. No, I I don't think you need the replays, right You should know it was bad at least when the game was relevant again You know who wants to watch the abs screw up to sixth goal and one that just doesn't matter It's a horrible save from blackwood, but he's not a me hockey players aren't dumb guys. They they know When they've screwed up and I would say like 90% of the time they know what they screwed up Like these are the best of the best hockey players they understand that and sure if a guy wants to get in the film room and talk about something you do that but they don't need to be like I Don't need the Peyton Manning of like I'm gonna run this play on the on the footage until someone speaks up and says what they screwed up

it's not It's it's obvious when you play this bad It's obvious what you messed up you don't need to refine a little detail that you really need to dig into on it You know, hey, I left the guy wide open at the top of my crease don't do that right you don't need a A lengthy conversation about why that's bad and how you should do it better. It's very obvious Trying to bring some levity somebody in the chat says burn the tape burn the jerseys obviously tongue and cheek but Bad sports karma for rocking the Nordic jerseys throw those wedge wood pads on that bonfire as well Those brown pads are not doing I mean they're ugly anyways. They are they are knock. I don't like them At all It's it's a horrible night from the apps. I I want to be very clear like There is no redeeming this game the apps play bad as they've looked all yearly awful Uh

Doesn't mean they're gonna look awful the next time You can you can take bad things away though totally. I wish I had three hours of my life back That this game was but It's it's just a tough spot. It's to be in when you're looking at The expectations on the apps they lose any game People are gonna be disappointed because they're supposed to be the best team in the league There's a team that's going all in for a stay in the cup and to a certain extent justifiable That that you're upset with the as when they struggle certainly when they struggle on a night like tonight the way they did So the response has to come This game will entirely be defined by the response if they go out and they beat Dallas in regulation on Wednesday All is forgiven. Yeah call answered they stepped up. It was facing adversity. Good job Well, I also get the people that are like well it could be two more points, which is true

Yeah, but you can only live in the world that you're in so you can't go backwards and replay and If they lose the Dallas Yeah, it's gonna be the heat is on the our chat's gonna be that scene from community where they walk in with the pizzas and everything's on fire like That's what it's gonna look like and you know there's some there's something to say about living and dying in the moment that way But I felt like that scene in community mostly because if you watch that episode It's the six different versions of the same night. Yeah, you're seeing the same thing over and over again That's how I felt just watching the ass give a four versions of the same dumb goal. It it was certainly The wrong version of Groundhog's day and in that regard Uh, and I do want to get to the defense. I promise we're gonna talk about it But we do need to take our second break of the show So let's shout out a few more of our sponsors including the folks over at Toyota again Best thing about Toyota the original vehicle of the NBR as it can drive you away from that hockey game

With pace so we never have to see it again Trucks have been part of their DNA for generations. They've got multiple choices there The Tacoma the Land Cruiser other great trucks too And they also have 17 different vehicles with all wheel or four wheel drive available like the epic four runner You can also and this is the one I care about because you know you guys have seen the gas prices As 16 different Hybrid vehicles to choose from even hybrid trucks like the tundra i4s max Toyota has more low and zero emission vehicles combined than any other auto maker out there So go get yourself over to your local front range Toyota store Including auto nation Toyota Rapunzel teniole Corrin toton boulder group toton little tin Mount St. Soton Denver Steven toton East Aurora and Steven Toyota West in Lakewood They are the official vehicle of DNBR and Toyota is also the official vehicle of the Colorado avalanche Toyota let's go places As the kind of game that might make you want to put your hood up Maybe throw some shades on you don't want to be recognized after a game like that throw some shady raids on

I you know the moment when you realize you left your favorite sunglasses at the beach or on the roof of your car or at a gas station Right a baseball field I've been there. It's the absolute worst the homies that shady rays are making that process so much less stressful Every single pair of shades is backed by lost and broken replacements They're not going to give you the third degree. Don't take your sunglasses off in a porta potty for the record I don't know why that was the example that came to mind We should uh, we should get two pairs one that's like rose colored and one that's like I like it for them all the way black Have the coper and the doomer Do like the little cartoon the devil and the angel's face yeah exactly Third period of the DNBR avalanche podcast This is a weird one in some ways for the defense because I actually thought Brent burns was pretty decent tonight Obviously the goal's a little bit fluke But he scores if they count the same and he was not the guy Regularly giving up breakaways and leaving dudes completely open in front of his own net for the most part He was a defender there on the first goal But That's a spinning backhand nothing thing for malkin wedgie bits so hard on the past. Yeah I don't put that one on burns So a weird factor. I guess if you're looking for a silver lining of the

defenses that Brent burns had a better game but Literally no one else did That's the that's the rare silver lining while also being incredibly alarming like yeah Yeah, it's great. He was good. It's awful that he was maybe your best guy. Yeah problem a problematic one for sure I've got a quote here that I think is interesting because Nathan McKinnon talking tonight We've just been making so many mistakes We have a lot of new guys and a lot of old guys out 70 I don't like 70 different defense when pairs every shift isn't great the flow is off for sure Yeah, it's not it's not a good thing the abs are in this spot and they chose to make their bed there right They're not killing anyone up to be a 12 forward because they're waiting for guys to get back and they're they're managing that roster and lineup post trade deadline um I don't really think the 70 thing was a problem in their last couple of games But it was a problem in this one for sure. It was the business was a mess

Stand your man's Manson. Yeah, I mean Tonight was the horrible Manson game. I We know who Josh Manson is we know the roller coaster give it take it type player some of that comes some of that comes with the territory with Manson It is more frustrating when he compounds things with the turnovers on top of it like that only are you yeah It was bad bad and there's definitely some fault there Manson has to make a better play on that puck or play the body on the first period goal where he just gets one of the two You can't be in no man's land he ends up doing nothing effective on that play and then The 7d problem reared its ugly head It was a really tough night for Nick Blankenberg Just And like an impossible situation. This is not a Veteran guy like Brent Burns who comes into team or even like a Brett Kulak who comes into a team with a ton of NHL experience and just does You're getting thrown in the fire no doubt. Yeah, and and Blankenberg clearly was not prepared to to keep up with the ab systems in this one

I mean if you throw kid in the pool trying to teach him at a swim he might sink. Yep And he sunk tonight. It was a really tough one for him and it's a really tough spot to be in because He was gonna be the 7 pretty much no matter what your options are limited And now you're looking at a guy where the second the abs can go 12-6 again I think Nick Blankenberg might get banished by Jared Bednar as to the shadow realm. Yeah, which like Hey, if you stay healthy, he's not in your lineup anyway, but a K the Raptors of ballerina or the media says yeah, right. It's its way up there. So it was tough for him You need more from Kaelin Taves Macar just cannot get beat up the ice the way he did on that breakaway goal. You you have to at least be competitive and Your bottom pairing existed, but what did they actually provide you? It defensively all of them were a mess. So I don't know I

Again, do we think five out of the six abs? Do you're gonna play horrible every single night? No, I guess it'd be six out of seven tonight but it's When you're in it, it does not feel good I mean kind of a lot like you would say about the goal tending. This is Arguably as bad as it gets Yeah, it has to be it has to be the worst In the arena directly in it is Bayley Curtis on the courtesy call from the Xfinity mobile Paul in line Bailey It's already been a long day for you given your flight home. I can't imagine this game helped much Oh, no, no, no, no, not at all when I expected coming into this one especially looking at Maybe some of the energy coming out of Winnipeg. I was not the only one having travel issues by the way Seems like the abs really did not have a good luck on this last road trip either. So you may be expected You know, you're at home. You're gonna maybe get find a little bit more of that home energy get your feet underneath the end. It just

It was a bad one overall like there there's really not I don't have Anything more eloquent as far as you know describing how this one looked Fair enough Vibe in the locker room j mic read out one of the quotes from McKinnon, but It sure seems like the abs are hard on themselves for this one absolutely one of the most you know I like I really enjoyed this McKinnon press or he was Very candid and a lot of it. I After games like this you maybe expect a lot of frustration from some of the guys and you certainly got that um out of some of their answers Molinsky was really quick to say like frustrations like the Best word you could use about this one um McKinnon was was just super candid and saying like the chemistry was off

Like you've got new guys coming in that are still kind of figuring out systems and routes and at this point in like you A week and some change removed from the the trade deadline. I mean, what can you do that soon after it like there's Yes, they're still they're finding their footing a little bit more But really like it takes a little bit more than than just 10 days to figure some of those things systematically out And it's something McKinnon especially is aware of um Yeah, he you try out a lot of different lines tonight Maybe you take a look at the 117 and realize it's just it's not working for the team like there's There's a lot of thing he he pointed to you know, maybe having one of those meetings pregame and and Just kind of touching back to some of the basics um A quote I really liked from the McKinnon pressure today was him saying like winning Oftentimes masked a lot of the team's issues

You you can get by if you're scoring more goals than the team on the opposite side of the ice um You see that maybe during a Seattle game Comes out to bite you a little bit during Winnipeg and it's definitely the situation here tonight um Moving around the locker room a little bit to the like is as fun as it was to kind of hear McKinnon in that state of mind to Brock Nelson was really quick to jump to the defensive the two who maybe maybe have the biggest eyes on them after a game like this And that's got what you wouldn't McKenzie Blackwood. Yes, you expect more out of them And that's something Jared Bednar talked about it after the last home game too and saying like You know they You they don't have to stop everything, but if you're some of the best goal tenders in the league you have to stop something Yeah, and That's Brock Nelson was very quick to come to to their defense and saying we did not do enough to help them

Like you you can't put that all on them like it's it's on us for not doing more in front of the net and I think both can be true at the same time Um there there's a lot to be said about me, you know Maybe Wedgewood was due for one. He's had some really good games the last couple of days played um But as far as you know that that battle bednar talked about maybe being a little more open-ended for the crease Then you might think it would be at this point in the season every every game counts and especially in a game like this one maybe you're looking for for one of those bigger saves um It's it's one of those hard ones because you do want one um Looking at three goals given up on five shots sucks, but at the same time too Your team's got to do more in front of the net to help them out and Everybody seemed very candid about that tonight My guess is even if the answer is

yes Maybe aren't gonna get this answer on record, but I'm curious if there were any questions asked either to the players or bedner in regards to Looking ahead potentially obviously you've got this big matchup with Dallas Wednesday night even pregame We're kind of talking about that of It's it's in the back of everyone's mind this massive game It's the biggest game of the regular season coming up Was there anything said about that if not I guess then what are your thoughts on on how that might have factored into this Almost every single guy we talked to mentioned You know the big focus might be you know looking ahead to Wednesday's game Against Dallas. It's gonna be a big one and they are all aware of that especially given Maybe some of the injuries going around the locker room too, so they like It's hard right because This team is really good at trying to stay in the moment Which I I really respect and I really appreciate and that that's most of

You know the responses that you get yes They're aware that there is a huge matchup coming up it at two best teams in the league at the current moment Like what what's their not to look forward to as far as you know preparing for a match like that But at the same time you have to focus on the game that's in front of you and That's a lot of where the focus was tonight With that said I I did kind of talked about our a little bit about a quote that Mac had during his presence and like you you know You can be frustrated and mad about the game There's part it and part of it you kind of do have to flush because you do have a big game coming up here soon and I asked Bednar about that a little bit and he had mentioned that Going back specifically to the Edminton game There's you know a lot to look back at and You know fix and pick apart from that game and he feels as though when they have games like that the team is responded really well

And in the next game you you look at the things that went wrong you look at some of those defensive breakdowns that led to a lot of the goals here tonight And he feels like the team is responded really really well to a lot of that criticism So there's part of that and saying like you know, this is a bad game the capability they know is there as a team But you you look at what wrong and you move forward it is a you know Keep your feet moving kind of mentality with this team. You can't afford to sit and you know dwell on the bad games when you have big matchups like this coming the plus and 20 games remaining the season What stood out what else stood out to you as far as bed nurse press conference goes like was What was his intensity level, you know like what were kind of the main things that stood out to you You know after games like this I've learned To kind of temper my expectations

I think a little bit because you look at certain games and maybe expect more of a frustrated benton are you more of a You know nothing went right and he's had certain games like that absolutely Tonight was an interesting one where he seemed oddly calm Um about it all and I like maybe oddly is the word wrong word to use there But he he seemed not content but I think When you have a game like Dallas kind of sitting in the back of your mind too He's trying not to dwell on a situation like this. He's really trying not to let a game like this get into his head Um, and that's kind of what came across As far as his presser He didn't see it like yes, obviously there's that frustration and he was very candid about you know Those were the main issues like it was just breakdown after breakdown after breakdown leading to a lot of these mistakes in front of the nets and and You know you can't win games like that. He was very open about that

But as far as you know Being mad and I mean he wasn't super snippy during he was very thoughtful very careful with his answers Um and say it like kind of giving credit where credit is due and making sure like you know Not all of this is on you know goal tending and you just have to be better like that That's the expectation. That's what was conveyed um And I think I really appreciate that from a coach like that not obviously. Yes, you maybe or allowed some sort of frustration After this, but knowing that he's got you know kind of a positive outlook on Being able to take the right things away from this game. I think is huge He got to find uh find the path forward for sure. I I don't know that there's a ton to say about it But special teams Bailey abs go for five on the power play they give up a goal on the penalty kill I don't know how much the penalty kill goal really mattered game was probably over anyway

But do you just need a power play goal in this game? It's a big part of it right and that that's something both McKinnon and Nelson touched on post game two and that's where I think you look at some of those You know huge moments for teams and this game feels a lot better if you get a power play gone the board mentioned that you know meetings between players and and going back to some of those basics are gonna be Maybe that's what they need to do and It's waited you've waited till game 66 to figure it out, but um To figure at least get to that point of realization, but um Yeah, this game looks I think you feel a lot better about it is somebody who you know was on the ice and trying to contribute If you can say you didn't go completely negative on the night. Yeah Feel like that's the conversation for every spot on the ice

Right Hard I mean according to Nathan McKinnon that's certainly possible Looking at burning some things down maybe that starts with the power play. I don't know Uh look It's it's brutal game from the abs you do you put it the best there's not a ton more that you need to say other than it's bad Are there actual concerns that this could spill over into the Dallas game or do you think the abs have that short-term memory ability? The short-term memory ability is there absolutely. I think the biggest issue You're looking out ahead of Dallas is some of that You know power missing due to injury and It doesn't look like that's coming back as soon as people might want it too as much as you know a Ross Colton maybe Was more looked at as a short-term. Yeah, some of these guys may not be coming back until the end of the next road trip

Which is going to be an eight-day long road trip you've got four games and Bednar made it sound like they might get some They're going to try to get At least a couple of the four guys that are currently missing back into the lineup by game four Including Logan O'Connor like did not leave that you know out of the realm of possibility, which you know Maybe that's more hopian than anything, but um I think that that's going to be the biggest part for you missing not and not only and you know what you're missing and and Logan O'Connor Isn't played for the entirety of the season, but Singing I like Gabe Landis Scott. You're missing Versus Kyle player like our Terry Leckon and you're missing a gritty player like Ross Colton who can really help against games Uh against opponents like Dallas rather and The short-term memory ability of this team. I think it's the least of their worries Uh ahead of the game like Dallas. You're you're looking at a Dallas team who also got blown out tonight So this is I think more so two teams that are going to be battling maybe

You know there's there's that embarrassment factor. I think coming out of it a little bit and saying like we I mean we both looked really bad against You know teams that maybe we should have beaten Um Now here's our opportunity to You know best on best what what can we do now to show that we we Are talked about as much as we are like that we we deserve some of the hype that we've you know gotten over the last 60 games Did either goal tenders speak and I'm guessing not but did they and then did uh did bedner give any indication of Who we might be going with on on Wednesday night? He said something pregame about playing the goal tender that's going to give you the best opportunity to work Uh me either of that today so so try to minor it is You know I don't know with some of this okay, that could maybe reluctancy well

I was gonna say with some of the reluctancy to call up from the the Eagles. I don't I'm maybe that's not a plus much of a possibility as we'd like um We can carpool trend down to the game on Wednesday And there's reason it's called the hockey highway We'll say that um No, it's it's really hard to tell um just because it looks like after a game like tonight both goal tenders could use a reset But if you're looking at You know the goal tinder that maybe had the most excuse You look at a McKenzie blackwood tonight who he comes in cold and It's a tough spot does it it really is um It's it's a tough spot to be in for both wedgewood and blackwood but Blackwood does a lot Um to give in the situation the beast put in it still comes up short for him obviously, but um I don't know it's half a dozen of one six of the other it's a coin toss

I think at this point um My if I had to put money on it it would probably be the blackwood Um that that's just kind of where my vibes my my spidey senses They're kind of leading me Um just because of the start of the McKenzie blackwood that scott wedgewood had um He's had some really good games over the last couple of stretch it will abstract stretch of games jeez Um And if you're looking to give any guy some sort of rest it look it I would Make sure Scott can sit as much as possible to see you're you're giving your The guy who's been better for you a better chance down the rest of the stretch I Think that's fair. That's that's all I had Bailey any final thoughts on this one You're not not really not a whole lot um I'm kind of taking the flush at mentality really it's You have a tough road trip with some tough travel issues um Leads to a game like this You're back in front of a home crowd on Wednesday take advantage of it and

I don't know a lot of teams talk about Bringing the best against the abs having the game against the abs circled on their calendars It seems like Dallas maybe one of those teams for the abs to where you look at some of that the you know bringing out the best In a team it's it's gonna be a fun one. I'm I'm expecting a good game on Wednesday at least much more fun than this one was I'll tell you that Well, we know all the abs have it circled too. So whatever we'll see what it looks like on the other side of that conversation Thank you for the call in we're gonna let you go get some sleep. Please go sleep some It's a long plan on it. It's for you That was Bailey Curtis follower on Twitter at Bailey Curtis with two wise and Bailey on Twitter on the Xfinity mobile call in line Uh, I think that's more or less everything. I have to say should we just listen to the bed and our presser? I don't want to talk about this game anymore. I bet bed and our didn't either but I think he gave us a good amount So yeah, let's hear from coach

I Take questions Colin go ahead start some Coach make you know talk about Communication kind of an issue. I just not having it Do you want the same page tonight or your thoughts on this game? Yeah, I would agree with that. I think Like they're jumping the first period like some of the things we were doing offensively talked about Getting to the inside ice more than we did against Winnipeg and Making sure we're delivering the puck to the net. We have a period with 18 shots and Defended hard, but we like the goals and chances that we're given up are just like blatant Guys get beat guys get no competed um Just not digging in enough and we're giving up easy chances and they're like like that's that that start is not on wedgie at all Like what's he going to do like some of the chances that we're giving up or Guys all alone at the net front kind of the same as Edmonton. We just talked about it right so

We we fixed it for Winnipeg and then it's back again tonight. So Then what the disappointing part for me is you down for two like what you're doing offensively should come on the second with a push and our game Went completely the opposite way like three shots No push one and done on every entry And just look like we want to try and skill our way through it and they just played the right way the whole game and Score ends up where it ends up. So it's my job to like make sure we Identify a couple things that are the most important for Tuesday or for Wednesday and Make sure that our guys understand that it's going to have to be a harder more competitive game on the offensive side of it to get inside And the same thing on the defensive side of it so we clean some things up and get ready to go again Jesse the never

Most of those weren't new guys. So it's like part of its lack of communication right like I think you got to be an active participant in the defending of your team right and I think we got a lot of guys that need to start saying more and doing more like on the ice So like we have a couple rush coverage goals That there's some new guys involved in and So one guy just says go and You know, we get two guys going at one guy and leaving a guy open that front multiple times again. We've got You know, it's that's just sort of the end result of lack of Execution and what we're trying to do and what makes us good on the offensive side of things for me in the second period, but Some of those breakdowns, I think Can be easily cured, but I mean, I think we're gonna talk more and we got to get more competitive like couple And we get beat up the ice for guys all alone couple and we get beat off the walls for guys all alone

And it's just just not good enough. Evan the Bayley You mentioned the trying to skill it up in the second day With I think you they're looking to try and create something off the Russian If it doesn't work out then doesn't work out like that's was their mindset right like It's easy to skate with the pop and try to make a play on Entry and if it doesn't work out doesn't work out like that's that's not a winning formula Right like our rush attack has been good over the years and it's been good this year because we played through to the net and We don't look quite like what we see we delay out of it. We can play through the bottom we play through the top but Lot of guys pass it up on shots trying to pass it all the way into the net. Lot of guys just you know Unwilling to kind of play to the goal line and Go win a battle in order to play our ozone play So it's a little bit of everything. It's what we'll address for sure going into Tuesday night's game

Bayley and then air Yeah, like I think like when we've addressed things with their team like our teams come out and responded You know doesn't always guarantee victory, but I like a lot of the things that we've addressed lately Our team comes out and does a good job like Edmonton We're not protecting the middle of the ice on some of our breakdowns We're not heading into the right areas on turnovers and whatnot to sort of cover up mistakes and When I would say like first half of the game against Winnipeg was probably the strength of our games probably the best we were all year So Now we got to make sure we're addressing the right areas going into Tuesday and I think our team will respond It doesn't guarantee your victory, but at least gives you the best chance Everything right when you watch the power play today What is it about is that stick style? I guess like on the forefront of why it's not working decision-making

For me execution and decision-making so it's like to me that was a The power play looked at me like An extension of our five on five Right You mentioned communication earlier. How do you encourage If someone players to talk a little bit more and is there a player that you rely on to You know open that avenue for a good team. I think it's all Yeah, it's all of them. I mean, I think like eat when you're in a position to communicate To someone defensively especially like that Elements, you know communication eliminates confusion so we say all the time and and that I believe in that and It's a little bit the same way offensively like if you want One of your teammates with his back to the player that's getting checked and is in about to do something with the puck If you relay that information to him, he's going to do it, you know, nine times of a 10 so If you're not communicating then you're just guessing on what to do with it when you're under pressure last few Megan

Tonight Yeah, when you don't have a good power player when you're just going breakout breakout the other team is gonna get momentum out of you Get momentum out of your power play you can get momentum out of your penalty kill So we've had some Not so great power plays and teams they're thriving on it knowing that they just killed some and they come back after us five on five and you know, it's same as our penalty kill if they do a good job Your team kind of get some energy out of it usually and starts turning it the other direction when they get five on five last What there's there was a game in like an end skip this morning What's the latest on them and even on equal ended? Yeah, so well Good sign that they're on the ice and and making progress, right? That's the first step They'll continue to skate and try to keep ramping up the workload and what they can do on the ice with restrictions

Do you know due to how they're feeling or their injury status Trying to get them on ice as much as possible so they can keep building that workload more and more each day Logan's been doing good same thing Uh Colts is still a little sore so he hasn't hit that point yet. I think The goal would be for us to try and see where they are at the end of the week so they can come on the road trip to eight and a half day road trip Four games so there's lots of time there that maybe possibly we could see some of those guys back and line up on the road extra Oh Well, there you have it not a ton of positives to take away, but at least Bednar is calm collected about it Uh, let's just get to the superchats. We're already, you know, over time. It's a Monday. We've been here too long $2 from Orion who says burn the jerseys their curse the effort. Yeah, I'm down

He has to regularly like have weird comebacks in these jerseys, but you know falling behind with them No fun Uh, and then two more two more dollars from Ryan who says shades of playing in front of four gear last year Yeah, I we said them the watch line I think that has to be the worst goalie performance. The odds have had easily they got rid of gear gear and like Again, maybe worse than even what we saw then should be I mean it was uh that playoff game Yes, I like to black that game out. Yeah, just pretend it didn't happen Um, yeah, and truly horrific goal tending from both goal tenders. I Don't be don't be that bad again. Yeah, be better be better. I don't know. The bed and our set It's about the execution right you can't Really coach that they just have to execute make as some of it. It's just kind of intangible make a play. Yep Betty who's been very generous today in between the watch long and the post game

Stanky-ass booty cheeks of a game boys scared about it Alice game Wednesday But not losing hope yet. Hope you'll be on the watch long then Jay Mike. Thanks for hyping up abs versus abs and ATL for life I mean Obviously huge game But to be clear if the abs lose the Dallas game They're still in first by one point with a game in hand Which is not good. You don't feel good about that but Technically, they'd still be in first could be worse Two dollars more from Ryan at the end 14 11 and two since new year 30 games you've been mid. Yeah, it's not great but it's also above average The abs would not be as good as Dallas or some other teams obviously on that stretch but Every other team has had worse stretches than the abs this season and that's why they're still at the top I mean, it's where you get frustrated both in hindsight and somewhat in the moment of the kind of two weeks before the break where you

It was just so clear that they went into coast mode. Yeah, and Now you're in a situation where you got to win some of these games down the stretch You got to win some probably most to be honest with the way Dallas is playing man Who know? I mean look Dallas has to start losing games eventually too. They lost tonight. They can lose more It could happen. It is allowed. I think it is Worth noting that Dallas is also not Chel team. They can't just win 40 straight games Doesn't happen so it is a factor too and I think the other thing there is Tonight sucks Losing three of your last four sucks these things are bad You should not enjoy them but also The fact that we're bemoaning Stretch where the abs are Clear cut above 500 There are Multiple multiple teams in the NHL that would kill

To play 500 hockey let alone above 500 It's the benefit of having this the start that you did all of the games count into the conversation And we're talking about that stretches the worst stretch of the season for the abs and that's that I think tells you the worst stretch you played You're still a playoff team right it tells you how good the abs really are and obviously they have to show up to turn it on like and do it But you can't play that brand of hockey and win a cup. I get it But there are teams in the league where they get blown out seven to two tonight and they're like yeah That's that's what happens on Tuesdays around here. Yeah, right That time will come again at some point for the abs and I'm not looking forward to it So I'm focusing on the positive a little bit here We'll see what happens in Dallas. We are going to wrap this one up. Anything left Jay mic before we go home and go to bed Biggest game of the year you better respond Get it done. We will be live tomorrow for an off-day show and then of course the big game on Wednesday We appreciate y'all. This has been the DnVR Ivalanche post game alive from the Toyota lounge
