Avalanche Danger: Stay Out of Backcountry

Avalance Canada has issued urgent warnings for very dangerous conditions across southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia, urging everyone to stay out of the backcountry. Roads in the mountains are facing temporary closures for avalanche control, including highway 93 between Lake Louise and Jasper. Through Saturday, Parks Canada reports extreme avalanche ratings in BAMF, Kutne and Yeoho National Parks, with natural slides reaching valley bottoms and parts of the trans Canada highway between Revelstoke and Lake Louise periodically closed. Warm temperatures, heavy rain and snow from an incoming atmospheric river are fueling the problem, prompting rainfall warnings for up to 70mm in southeastern British Columbia and southwestern Alberta. The alerts also extend to Vancouver Island and coastal mountains north of Vancouver, where flooding risks are rising, so mountain travel remains.
