He fell to his death while ziplining with his wife at Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours near Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland back in October 2019. The couple was on a bucket list adventure in the Dane Tree region after Dean recovered from a serious health issue. They were traveling between two platforms 86 meters apart when something went wrong with the line. Shannon Sanderson told the court she and her husband dropped suddenly while moving fast. She screened for help after waking up on the jungle floor next to her unconscious husband. It took about five minutes for staff and another tourist to reach them. A witness from the same group heard a loud crack and felt the platform shake. Staff called a code red and lowered people down, but he injured his knee in the process and got no immediate first aid.
