Australia Bans Islamist Group Hizb ut-Tahrir

0:00Welcome to Sydney News Today, two minutes of news that matter to Sydney. The Australian federal government has officially listed the Islamist group Hisb-Utahirir as a prohibited hate group. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke made the announcement marking the first time a group has been banned under the nation's new hate laws passed in January. This move came after the Bondi terror attack and follows advice from ACL back in February when the minister first signaled the process was underway. People caught being members recruiting for the group, providing training, funds or any material support now face serious consequences including up to 15 years in prison. The group was already outlawed in several countries such as Egypt, Germany, the United Kingdom and Indonesia among others.
