Australian authorities have officially banned the Islamist group, Hisbyut Tahirir, as a prohibited hate organization under new anti-terror laws. This marks the first time these laws have been used, following the deadly Bondi beach attack that killed 15 people last December. The attack targeted Jewish Australians and was fueled by extremist Islamist ideas. Hisbyut Tahirir was one of the government's top targets, alongside a neo-Nazi group that disbanded earlier this year. Membership, recruiting, training, funding, or supporting the group now carries penalties of up to 15 years in prison. Homophares Minister Tony Burke, who has opposed the group for 20 years, approved the ban based on advice from spy agency ASIO. The group pushes for an Islamic caliphate and rejects democratic values.
