1:02days where it's it's really really hard to be alone with the news and this morning someone on our team told me that the people a lot of people had been posting their own stories about that day 25 years ago on our brand new MS now community page sharing their own experiences. And so I just started reading and I started reading about where you were and about how that day changed your lives and about how you were feeling on this solemn anniversary and I just I just wanted to start tonight by reading some of those accounts because my bet is they are going to stick with you like they have stuck with me since I read them this morning. Okay so here's this one this one is from Sam here's what he says quote waking up to my mother sobbing in the morning I initially thought someone we love died. I asked her when I came out and the first tower had been struck we became silent when the second one was a deep thick silence she'd collapse in a shrinking sob and being 12 it was the first time I realized

2:04something was happening beyond usual forces. I felt fear we cried we couldn't fathom it then over the weeks we watched the heroics the bond and beauty being patriotic isn't politics but a profound feeling of pride for our fellow Americans. I'll never forget that moment in my life it's a reminder that bravery isn't a promise of life but of remembrance and hope. This is another account I read from someone with the initials J. M. T. This person says I was in London two weeks after 9-11 on a vacation with my friends and I decided not to cancel despite any fear of flying we figured security at airports would be more alert than ever and they were the passengers and flight teams on that trip felt more friendly and compassionate than any other trip I've taken we visited St. Paul's Cathedral in London where memorial was set up in remembrance of the victims. When other visitors realized we were Americans we were approached

3:10by so many with sympathies I'll never forget the way we were embraced as a kind of stand-in for all Americans because the Londoners just wanted to reach us in that way. This is one from Mary. My husband worked on Pine Street he was on a plane to DC when the first tower was hit. Cell phones were down for hours and when we finally spoke I never cried so hard. We were determined to do whatever we could to help. We got painter's masks closed and food for the firefighters and twice a week I would drive into the city with my truck filled with cooked hands and mac and cheese and green beans for the first responders. Our community stepped up we lost so many people over the years from exposure heart attacks after years of sleep apnea lung disease and cancer. My husband has survived cancer he has an inspired device to help him breathe I have systemic illnesses there's so many of us still fighting the effects of what we breathed

4:11in and walked through. If any of us had known what was going to happen decades later it wouldn't change a thing. The firefighters still would run into those buildings we would still come to serve them that's what Americans do we come together. This is from Alamine Alamine this person says I was living in California at the time as a manager of a family homeless shelter and had begun my day for work which always included MSNBC in the background as I prepared for work I remember thinking why did my channel change on the TV because it went from regular programming to breaking news as I watched the second plane crashing my legs gave out and fell backwards into my couch in complete unbelief it then became urgent to get to work and somehow calm the residents who all were emotionally vulnerable. My best memory was the unity afterwards and seeing firemen holding boots collecting donations to assist in New York City.

5:16It was a unity we seek desperately to recover and this is from Sarah I remember driving up to Boston to work on September 12th and actually feeling the unity all around me on that highway we were together what has happened to us. And that question Sarah posed is it's all of that's been ringing in my brain all day it's probably been ringing in yours as well but that question has been ringing in my mind all day what has happened to us what has happened to America in the quarter century since those attacks it's a really it's a really hard question to wrap your head around especially on a day like today in some sense we've come a long way I mean after decades of fighting America's longest war which was a direct result of that attack of course on September 11th that war is now over. Osama bin Laden the man behind those attacks as long dead a young man from a Muslim family who came of age in post 9-11 New York was

6:16elected mayor of that resilient city. There are many many examples of how this country has moved forward has made progress but in other ways it feels like we've gone backward in the 25 years since that attack presidents of both parties have at times chosen to mark this dark anniversary by visiting the site of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil to be somber to be quiet to remember to be with each other with a community but this year the president of the United States decided not to attend that song remembers for a pretty outrageous reason according to the New York Times president Trump initially planned to be at New York's 9-11 Memorial Actground Zero his team even reportedly conducted advanced visits to the site to prepare for his attendance which means they were very close to him going but apparently Trump decided not to back out to after learn at two back out I should say after learning that he could not delivery speech at the annual event that is long long barred remarks

7:20from politicians for good reasons that's according to four people with knowledge of the events and and what he decided and for what it's worth the White House denies that but instead of going to the ground zero where presidents have gone somberly quietly remembering Trump chose to attend the commemoration event at the Pentagon where he was allowed to give a speech and I'm going to get that speech in just a second but I first wanted to point out that during the moments when Trump wasn't speaking when Trump was not able to make the event all about himself he appears to have nodded off on stage I'm showing you all the pictures now you can be a judge for yourself he was unable to keep his eyes open as the other speakers on that stage commemorated the 25th anniversary of 9-11 and that split screen of the current president of the United States resting his eyes slumped over waiting to speak while all of the living former presidents stood quietly and solemnly together in New York City is its own representation

8:22of how we have gone backwards but it was what Trump said today during his remarks that should be the most disturbing piece of deja vu I think we all remember that one of the most frustrating peace experiences Americans felt in the years after 9-11 was the feeling that our political leaders had used the tragedy of that day to drag our country into a protracted military conflict with Iraq a country that had nothing to do with the attacks we experienced on September 11th and there's a very long very well documented history of how the Bush administration tried over and over again to draw a line between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein hoping to gin up support for an entirely different war with an entirely different country and that experience left such a bad taste in the mouths of the American people that Trump was able to capitalize on it during his first campaign for president obviously of the war in Iraq was a big fat mistake the decision to go into Iraq was probably one of the worst decisions ever

9:26made in the history of our country our failed establishment has brought us nothing but poverty at home and disaster overseas that's what we have disaster the wars we never win the arrogant political class never learns they keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again that message was a big part of how Donald Trump rose to power in the first place but today without any hint of irony Trump decided to once again use the specter of 9-11 to justify his entirely separate war with an entirely separate country we will never ever forget that's why we fight today we don't have a choice there can only be victory we fight hard we fight to win we salute the service members working right now to

12:32one of the most respected and experienced national security reporters in the business and continues to provide all of us a lot of insight on what is happening I'm so grateful you could be here tonight I think it's such an important day of reflection on what the country has experienced and also what we should learn from it frankly as we look ahead as I just mentioned you were you were inside the Pentagon Pentagon on 9 11 working I believe as a producer for ABC news when the planes struck the building tells about what that day was like well you know like everyone in New York in Shanksville across the country it was a beautiful day woke up went to work obviously not a clue about what was about to happen that and literally I think a bit as darkness literally coming over the horizon a number of reporters like myself inside the building we were down the hall by the command center waiting for some sources to come out tell us what

13:33they quote about New York and suddenly and my friends have heard me say there's so many times over the years suddenly one loan Pentagon police officer comes running down the hallway and at the top of his lung shouting get out get out we've been hit everybody get out and when you're in a military environment those words we've been hit you know nobody needs to be told twice the building started to evacuate I went out and found myself on the side of the building where the plane headhits staring at literally five stories of flame and soon to be a collapsed wing of the building but after so many years I suddenly I find myself as you're talking Jen as well looking ahead looking to the future what did we learn and where do we go from here and what I take away now from all of this is the great strength of the US military which in fact I couldn't disagree with

14:36Pete Hankseth more is its diversity that day we saw a diverse strong force at the Pentagon several people moving back into the flames to try and rescue people just as fire trucks were rolling up his ambulances were descending on the Pentagon and we all came to in the press corps I think we all came to realize we were embarking on some 20-year journey to places around the world combat front lines we never expected to be at and seeing really the best of the American military seeing young people serving with great honor and distinction. I was talking this morning with with director Brennan on Peter Alexander showed us about how that day prompted so many people to join the military to get into public service and it is part of the story of this country as well as much as it was a horrific tragedy in our history you've covered I

15:37mean you were there as you've just described and you've also covered twenty parts at or many of the twenty five memorial five years of nine eleven memorials since then of presidents commemorating of secretaries of defense commemorating at the Pentagon as you were listening to president Trump and Pete Hankseth speak today what an advocate I should say for for a war in a run that they choose to start just to start what went through your head well I guess let's face it unbiased I was at the Pentagon I was seeing great suffering that day I had never anticipated in my life that I would see and I would go on over the next many years like so many reporters and so many journalists traveling overseas to see more and more of it and to see the you know grievously wounded troops and sit with parents of young troops who had fallen in battle and I guess I feel what a shame that they couldn't the two of

16:43them could not maintain essentially the integrity of the day this is a day about remembrance and renewal and moving forward as a country with with with dignity and honor and I think it's a shame they couldn't they they couldn't maintain that integrity of the event I think every other secretary of defense I have covered on 9-11 has absolutely understood that's really what the day and the ceremony is all about yeah there's no question about that and Donald Trump could have chosen to go to the to New York and could have stood there solemnly and quietly with the with former presidents I just talked about this but you covered all of this and I just curious what you think because part of what struck me about the remarks was that you know 9-11 was used to justify a war that was unrelated the war in Iraq and they seem to be President Trump and Pete

17:45Texas seemed to be trying to use the war on terror or 9-11 to justify a war in Iran which I thought was quite striking well it is striking and I'll tell you the American people are pretty smart about these things you know I think every poll will show there is declining support for this war and the Pentagon learned the lesson the US government learned a lesson as far back as Vietnam you can't really prosecute a war that the American people do not support and this war they do not the people you know whether you think it's a cliche or not American support the troops they really do but that means they don't want the troops going off to war in a conflict that can't be one that isn't well thought out that doesn't have a strategy and doesn't have a clear and state nobody wants endless wars in this country anymore if there's been any lesson of the last 25 years I really believe that that is it it's a lesson that's

18:48re-learned generation to generation perhaps but that's not what the American people want and if you want young people to join the military because they want to serve something essentially larger than themselves I think you really have to offer a constructive positive vision you know dare I say not a lot of workout videos not a lot of hyper waving around of hands and talking in terms of you know uniforms and haircuts and gender treatments and all of that stuff if that's what's necessary in some cases so be it but offer young people a true way ahead in service to the nation and make them want to join the military I think is something that would be so dangerous to ignore no question about it and I know we're all grateful to the men and women serving out there and they're in a very tough position right now Barbara star thank you so much

No question about it that's probably the most important thing to be clear about right now you tell us that all the time i wanted to ask you i i you've been talking about this on our air you've been writing about it it is think something something everybody's confused about every time you're on i turn up the tv so we're waiting a ruling from the supreme court on trump's effort to restrict mail and voting something everybody's been falling very closely what do you think we should be expecting or preparing for on that front okay so i think those are two different things right there's yeah fair yeah fair yeah fair or yeah i think at this point i expect that uh that we will

26:10win that the pro democracy side will win the states will win the non-profit organizations uh will win and i i say that because i think that whatever the conservator's supreme court may think about the merits and that will impact for example 2028 i think that they are going to observe the pottery barn rule which is that they don't want to break it and then own it and if they were to rule in favor of the postal service the fact is that you would have entire states that would have their election system to broken i mean every state would be harder to vote significantly but you have states like Washington state like like Arizona like frankly Utah uh Colorado or Oregon Florida you know where there are just lots and lots of mail and ballots or predominantly or in some of those states entirely vote by mail so i think i i sort of expect that we are going to win and every day that that goes by that harm becomes greater and it becomes more likely that that's what the court is heading towards in terms of what we have to prepare for look we have to prepare for everything i mean you know what i was asking like are you prepared for you know ice at the most you prepare for

28:15them would be a big flip for democrats uh punch full news also reports that next week senate democrats are said to have their own closed door conversation about the senate map and they say you are going to be briefing the senators maybe you're doing a state by state race but i know your expertise is a little different than that what are you gonna give us a sense is there a sense can you give us a sense and people out there of like what you're gonna tell them because i think it's telling about where your head is and what people should be tracking at this moment yeah so it's a fair say they are not having me there to do a state by state analysis although i don't think so although i will tell you that john alaska is going to be a real elected Roy Cooper is coming to the u.s senate Susan Collins is finally going to be defeated and democrats are going to sweep in Iowa michigan and i think it was alaska they mentioned and by the way james telerico will be a great u.s senator so that's my that's that's that's that's that's that's that's what i would say but i suspect that they're gonna want to hear and what what i am oftentimes asked by members of the house and senate and governors and a g's and and and ordinary americans is like what what do we

34:29prosecutor who is resigned in this case in other words there is yet another prosecutor the one just before him who also resigned and reportedly because there was a lack of evidence in other it's consistent with the judge of his first statement that you read jade um of course there prosecutors who resigned from the department of justice in new york in minnesota in dc in virginia thus to name a few um why because they could not stomach what this administration has been doing which has all the appearance of vindictive and selective prosecution um as has been found bomb by judges and as being litigated right now so yes it is surprising that it is coming this time from jade gennava and you know as you would think if it's coming from him that's a new low for this department of justice that it's i mean the thing that was striking and that is such

35:30an important context for everybody here what you just said as always is his comments were very specific right his comments were you know if you don't have enough evidence it's you you shouldn't be prosecuting or that's kind of a paraphrase of course and also that about speed which makes me think we don't know who he's referring to but obviously there's Todd blanche there's Donald Trump there's lots of options we're where does your head go with all of that is it it's it's it may be just an expansion of what you were just talking about well i i i i not to not to sort of be modland but we we are on the 20th anniversary of 9-11 and where my head goes is you know i was in the department then and one of the things that was a common refrain and mantra in the department but also in the country where large was to embrace the rule of law and due process and essentially don't let

38:39became director um just just as 9-11 happened and he drove himself and everyone at the FBI so hard no one no one harder than himself because he was not going to have that happen on his watch um that was the number one thing that he did um and for 12 years um he did that job and that was his so focused was protecting the safety of this country and it's worth remembering that particularly um this day and to see what has happened to the FBI and to its leadership um the country doesn't deserve it and the FBI doesn't deserve it i think that is so well stated it is i don't i it's why it's so helpful to hear from you and others who have lived in there about how what has been lost and it's it's scary frankly what has been lost and it's it's hard to talk about but it's

40:4220th sheriff in the county's history a long time conservative republican he grew up here and worked as a border patrol agent for 26 years so this is part of big bend project number five which is going to be 165 miles so it's the last 37 miles of brooster county two point five billion dollars is what they want to spend on this project alone just this just this stretch exactly he used to go on networks like newsmax and fox praising trump now he told me he's starting to see things differently we're going to see the pendulum swing again i'm i'm pretty confident um here even here in the state of texas he's frustrated senate candidate ken paxson and governor gregg abbott haven't pushed back on trump harder and the reason is is they're all afraid of president trump because they know that if they go against anything he'll lash out adam and possibly sink their political career joining me now is in toney hilton who you just saw in that clip host of the brand new show the assignment with intonie hilton which debuts tomorrow at 1 p.m. eastern right here

41:44in ms now i know where i'm going to be after i get through my kids morning of soccer games baseball games sowing class all of the things i cannot wait um i let tell me i want to start because that is such an example that's just a snippet of it um everybody can watch the whole thing of course but that is an example of the kind of reporting you do and i know the kind of reporting you're going to bring to your new show but but tell us more about what you learned on in texas and how people like chair cleveland who we just saw are are feeling right now we heard him say talk about how it might flip again tell us more about your conversation yeah i will say there are a couple words that kept coming up in my time down there in the big bend region but trail came up repeatedly confusion um one of the things the sheriff kept telling me was you know i'm a border patrol guy he spent 26 years in and in fact he worked very closely earlier in his career with raadney scott that's the current border patrol commissioner he's the guy who trump has kind of dispatched down to texas to try to quell people's concerns about all this

42:44they work together hand in hand as agents back in the day and what sheriff cleveland says is anyone who's been in border patrol understands that this doesn't make sense for this region for anyone who hasn't been to this part of the country the big bend region has what both democrats and republicans will tell you is a natural wall thousands of feet high mountains dangerous terrain and the real grand river it's so dangerous that in fact when you see this full piece tomorrow saki you'll see that my team despite having a high end uh sort of special vehicle that we rented in order to go shoot on the border we got trapped in the desert for hours one night our car was stuck in the desert from about 8 p.m. until 130 in the morning if you listen to the president talk about this place you would think though that people are just streaming over walking with their kids and their families um that this is a breeze under the it was a breeze under the Biden administration that hasn't been the case and certainly isn't now um and it's really interesting

43:45to see how for the people who actually live their own land their run businesses there the proposal to put a wall through the land that they've had in their families for generations it's brought people to a place where with everything else going on in the world in the country right now they're starting to really wonder you know why did i buy into this in the first place this fieldwork i think you called yourself an outdoor cat or Jacob called you an outdoor cat you called each other outdoor cats anyway the point is i love that term it's such an important part of understanding the electorate in the country and it's something you have been bringing to viewers for now quite some time is it going to be a big part of your show what more can we expect when we all tune in tomorrow yeah i think that it's going to be a big part of the show in the sense that i think everything that i've learned in the field over the last 10 years the DNA the heart that i've found i think it's just going to be in everything that we do on the assignment and then there is also the reality that the the great thing about having a weekend show Jen is that i have
