0:00On April 17th, former BBC Radio 1, DJ and Live 8 host Andy Kershaw has died at age 66. His family confirmed he passed around 7.30pm, British summertime last Thursday. Back in January, they shared he'd been diagnosed with cancer and lost the ability to walk. Kershaw kicked off his career in the early 80s at a lead station before hitting the big time on Radio 1 from 1985 to 2000. For 15 years, he brought eclectic sounds, boosted world music, and even eyed as John Peele's successor. His sister Liz worked there too during that stretch. He shifted to Radio 4, covering global tunes and heavy conflicts like the Rwanda genocide in 1994. Later gigs included Radio 3 trips to places like Iraq and North Korea. But personal struggles sideline him for years, lending him short jail stints around 2008 for restraining order violations.
