An Unlikely King (I Samuel 16:1-13)

Grief can make the future feel sealed shut. We start with Samuel mourning Saul’s failure and fearing what it will do to Israel, and then we sit with God’s blunt comfort: He’s in control of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. That single truth challenges the way we interpret national chaos, broken leaders, and our own mistakes, because sin is never strong enough to derail God’s ultimate purposes.

From there, we talk about why the Bible uses biography as a teaching tool and why David gets more chapters than any other human in Scripture. The record does not flatter its heroes. It tells the truth, showing David’s highs and lows so clearly that it feels like looking into a mirror, and it keeps pushing us past the man to the God of David and His magnificent grace. If you’ve ever felt disillusioned by leadership or discouraged by your own failures, this lens matters.

We then move into 1 Samuel 16, where God sends Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint the next king, quietly and wisely, while Saul is still on the throne. Samuel wants a clear set of criteria, but God calls him to obey and promises to fill in the blanks. The turning point comes when Samuel is drawn to the tallest son and God stops him: people look at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
