American Academic Freed After Taliban Detention

0:00On March 24, Taliban authorities in Afghanistan freed American academic Dennis Coil on Tuesday after detaining him for more than a year. The release took place in Kabul to mark Eid al-Fitter, the holiday ending Ramadan. Coil had been held since January 2025 on charges of breaking local laws, though officials never detailed the accusations. His freedom followed a plea from his family and a ruling from Afghanistan Supreme Court that his time served was enough. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar play key roles in talks leading to the release. Afghanistan's Foreign Minister also met in Kabul with former U.S. Special Representative Zalme Khalilzad, just beforehand. The U.S. State Department recently named Afghanistan a sponsor of wrongful detention, saying it holds Americans to gain leverage. Afghan leaders reject that idea, insisting arrests follow real violations and calling Coil's release a goodwill step to build trust between nations.
