Alabama Major Killed in Iraq Plane Crash

0:00From the Daily News Now Network, this is Corey, with Birmingham News Today. A U.S. Air Force major from Alabama died in a plane crash in Iraq earlier this month. Major John Alex Cleaner was one of six crew members killed when their KC-135 refueling aircraft lost contact. He was on a mission as part of Operation Epic Fury. The crash happened on March 12th over friendly airspace during a refueling stop. The U.S. Central Command reports no hostile or friendly fire hit the plane. Investigators are still working to figure out exactly what went wrong. Cleaner had recently settled in Trussville with his wife Libby and their three young children. He was an Auburn University graduate from 2016 with a degree in mechanical engineering. His family announced the news on social media. Leaders across Alabama shared their grief right away.
