AEA PAC AVOTE Gives $420K to Republicans

The Alabama Education Association's Political Action Committee, known as AVOT, just reported its February donations, bringing the year-to-day total to $775,000. Over half of that money, $420,000, went straight to Republican lawmakers in the state. These contributions came in standard chunks of $10,000 or $15,000 a piece, mostly dated early March or early February of this year. The Alabama Republican Party's own rules strictly forbid accepting funds from the A.E.A., whether directly or through groups like ABOT. Party bylaws go further, warning office holders to steer clear since they view the National Teachers' Union as tied to Democrats. Recipients so far this cycle have racked up more than $1.5 million in career contributions from AVOT. That includes a long list of senators and representatives from places like Atmore,
