I forgot to mention it yesterday. What did you guys think of the Clippers ditching the salary cap with Kui Leonard? Yeah, what happened there?

2:00Like, I'm still trying to figure out exactly the details all the things I know. Oh, I know what details. What do you need? They got all of it. I haven't really been in tune with it if you want the truth. Okay, so the Clippers after an investigation were punished $30 million, $5 future first-round picks, and their own or Steve Bomber was suspended for a year. Kui Leonard basically gets nothing, right? He just gets to live his life and he made a lot of extra money. So, Godfather, what they did was they signed him or other companies signed him to marketing deals. And it sounded like people in Kui's camp were asking for that, right? Like, hey, if you want him, you got to give him even more than what the maximum is. So, figure that out. In my mind, too, Crats, this was done so slapily, right? Like, he really wasn't even doing anything deliverables-wise to earn the endorsements. I wonder how many endorsement deals are actually buttoned up and tied to teams hiding things.

3:02I bet you there are, if the over-under set it to 1.5, I bet you were way... Well, honestly, if the over-under was set at 5.5, I bet you were over that number for teams that have brands helping them out to pay a little extra sauce to players that they want. Nope. There is no way that's going on. Salary cap is the answer to everything, above board, and everything that creates parity in all leagues. Come on, Scott. Hey, this is actually legal as far as I know it. Good joke. This is legal as far as I know it, okay? If a player signs a marketing deal for a ton of money and does what he's supposed to do, then that's okay. Period, right? Make sense. Yeah. It makes total sense. People sign marketing deals to do things. Sometimes you might look and be like, man, they're only doing a commercial shoot and a social media post or an appearance and they're getting $X million.

4:04It's a marketplace. It's not like the salary cap is not set for influencer marketing deals, appearances, marketing contracts, endorsement deals. There's no salary cap for that, right? So you might look and say, I can't believe company X is paying this NBA player to do that. Well, technically, it's by the books, as long as you do something, why wasn't even doing anything? They were just basically funneling money to him and they had enough proof that it was going on that way. Again, my point is you could do this a lot more cleanly and get away from it and there's not much you can do about it. So fast forward. Let's say we have a salary cap and major league baseball. What's to stop certain teams from making sure that their players get really nice endorsement deals from brands that they work with? And I'm talking millions, right? All of a sudden you look and it's like, oh, this player used to get make 200K endorsement deals. Now he's making 20 million a year. And so those teams are still able to circumvent it. There was one of the things that they talked about when Portland was possibly going to get a major league baseball team.

5:06How Nike could come in and be a major piece to drawing players in. I'm not talking about college stuff where it's like, ooh, you get some cool Nike gear. It's about those off field things that if major league baseball goes to a salary cap, they're able to circumvent those rules. It's going to, it happens and it would happen. Telling back to baseball, it would happen. I knew about the Clipper thing. I didn't want to sound like I knew what was talking about and then just sound totally like what is he talking about? No, I had the little intricate details for me or what I needed to hear from you. And I knew Kui Leonard was involved in it, but I didn't know there were those such rules like that kind of stuff. But now that's trouble.

6:06So I mean, you can still make side money with deals, but they can't be paying your salary is what you're saying. Correct. I mean, they can. That's the thing. There's gray line. It's just that they went so far past the gray line that it became too ridiculous. Right. They were essentially just paying him and he wasn't doing anything. I think it's a good thing. All I think of when people say Kui Leonard, I know it's off the topic. Is that laugh? Yeah, that laugh gets me every time, but it's a big, it's a big penalty. And based on the clothes I'm wearing today, I feel like I have to say as I look at myself on the screen, I have to say like we're hunting rabbits. I feel like I'm going hunting right now, but I got my yard on. Yeah, I mean, the last penalty like that was for the Astros, right? With the sign stealing scandal, you know, which, which was some picks and I think it was five mill. So there's a little more money, but 30 million dollars for a billionaire is called a drink at a bar.

7:15He good. All right. Let's talk ball. This is such a good all smiles presented by Lorraine Co. Adley Rutchman, are you kidding me? First of all, the ovation was so, so well done in Baltimore, Todd Fother. And then he hits the home run. Hits another one in his third AB. Here's the first one we're looking at on the hanging curveball from young, young tried to go up and in on him to eight bees later. And he got him again. And you ask for a better return to a place that you loved if you're Adley Rutchman, two dingers. The standing o was before the first AB and then they were still cheering for him after the first home run. Listen, I knew he was good there with the royals. I didn't know how much he was loved though. Ah, this is incredible. I mean, listen, you come back to your home city where you first played and you know the excitement. I remember when he got called up like this is the dude coming up and you know he was good.

8:19He plays the game the right way, you know switch it and catcher. I didn't know the fans loved him that much, man. I think honestly, this is it was truly incredible, man. This was this was really, really fun for him. And if I'm him, I'm remembering this night forever. You know, now you know anytime he goes to Baltimore or anything with Baltimore, he's got a soft, soft heart for that. And he's going to make sure he does what he does best and help out as many people as he can now. Now I think it he was the face of this next or the final part of the rebuild. They were rebuilding and they wanted to say, OK, this is the group that's going to get us here. This is our one one. I don't think he's done anything bad in Baltimore. If you have a one one and he goes three time all star, I think people thought maybe he was an MVP. But I felt like his tenure in Baltimore should be remembered with a standing o like that.

9:20Yep, agreed. Right here. Three time all star also keep in mind when you sign a first round pick a first overall pick. You're expecting him to be there hopefully for life if he's a superstar. For a while. Yeah. We might just be scratching the surface. Right. Sometimes we want to judge every player right off the jump. It takes time whether it's development injuries. Adley Rutchman can still be a star player in this league for a long period of time is young. I mean, technically the way we used to look at prime years he hasn't even gotten there yet. So in terms of what he did at the start of his career with Baltimore, there were a lot of good things. Was it perfect? Was he the best player in baseball? No. But there were a lot of good things and if you look at the overall body of work, definitely above average catcher borderline. I mean, really all star, right? So upper echelon catcher in this sport. So good for all fans to recognize that. And I've got the Adley shirt on by the way. But let's keep the conversation going right now.

10:20Let's bring in our first guest here. Yes. Steve, you're going to have to tell me because I apparently was told last time around that I said your name wrong. So I apologize for that, but tell it to me straight one time and then I've got you from here on out. Gigi. We had to mute it. It spelled with a W, but it's pronounced without it. Malaski. Malaski. Okay. No W on the right. So I said Maluski last time. That's the last time. Steve Malaski joining us. I wanted to start. You couldn't say the way I've never heard it so far. I've heard it. I'm sure Steve. Well, it's great to have you on. You guys are crushing it on Birdland territory too. It's been awesome to listen to. So first take us through the Adley return and how cool it was for osfans to experience him coming back. But then also Adley burned them and they ultimately lost the game. Well, I mean, who knows their pitch is better than Adley, not just the actual stuff they have, but how they sequenced it. So I mean, maybe some of that was on display last night, but you know, the Orioles love their own.

11:25They love original Orioles and Adley is the ultimate original Oriole one one pick. There's only been three in the history of the Oriole franchise and of course the draft dates to the mid 60s. And he was the face of the rebuild a rebuild that went from 115 losses until 101 wins in a Ali's title to play off. They didn't want to play off game. We know, but they got there and they went from worse to first on his watch and he delivered. Then so last few years were not what he wanted this year was much better. And I think ultimately Scott will never know this answer, but it seems like the Orioles felt like they wanted to resign them, but they weren't going to be able to. And so they they learned their lesson with Machado. They traded him with two months to go and they got what looked like a decent haul and it wasn't. And so if you wait till the final two months, the package goes way down. This package was robust obviously. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman.

12:28I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I choose option B. Who is the last guy that you think would have received that type of ovation, that type of impact on Orioles fans? Wow, they're not many probably. They really aren't.

15:33Sometimes when you leave, the Orioles fans don't like that. They didn't like it when Mike Macino went to New York. That was very, very different. And so, yeah, they, they, that was a great night for Orioles fans and the class of the organization, the tributes and Adley handled a class. He was asked, of course, pregame, any hard feelings against Michael Ayes. And he said, none whatsoever. And he said, I love the Orioles always will. And he says, tight with that group, Gunner, Adley, Kowler, Mount Castle, those are those are thickest thieves. They're friends for life. And so you could see the affection on the field. You don't see that often in a major league baseball game, guys practically on the home plate. But we saw last night. I want to dive into the Orioles team now and talk a little about, you know, basically I call resurgence here. It's been, and I've been a component. I wasn't a fan when they had all the prospects. They didn't do anything with them. And I always said they got to trade some of these guys so they can get better and better. You know, you never know what a prospect is going to be.

16:36But now they kind of turned it around a little bit. My question to you is, you know, why and how is this team in a playoff run right now? What has been the key for this team's run going, moving forward. And now they have the shot to make this playoffs. They seem like a team with nine lives this year. They probably used up seven or eight of them already. And every time they get momentum, they don't keep it. We thought after the cows are catch finally got to 500. It was a four month climb to get there. Now here they go. And they've lost three straight cents by four combined runs. At different times, they've had different things come through the rotation for a long time, carried them. And so it's been a little iffy late because some guys are really heavy on their innings now. The bullpen was on a tremendous role for about two weeks. And now it's given up late homers back to back. The offense is jackal and hide. They went to Tampa. They scored 26 runs in four games. The next six games against the Yankees in Tampa.

17:38They scored 14 runs. They started their last road trip. Five and one by scoring 43 runs. They went to Colorado and got nine. It just you just don't know throw it dark. And the Orioles offense may score eight or may score one. We've seen both. Do you feel like it's a implementation of the players that are out there? Do you feel like it's how they're implemented? There's some like questionable pinch hitting, but not pinch because you don't win and lose a season on pinch hitting. But it's the question of why they're making the decisions based on a roster that they have. Well, here's what I wrote today and I asked Craig Auburn has this question after the game last night and the Orioles are really wedded to the left right platoon edge. And when they were winning the A at least, the stats could say show you they were playing the platoon advantage about as well as anybody in baseball is working for them.

18:38In my opinion, it's not working anywhere near that well last night. The seventh inning last night, three, three game. Two on two out and Carlos Navias is batting. And he has really struggled as an Oreo after last night is five for 55 without an RBI is three out to three O three OPS 30% K rate. They allowed him to hit in a tie game with two on with a full bench of lefty hitters Eric Miller lefty was in for the red socks. But the Orioles, the to me and to hear Craig Auburn has explained it. What allowed their viage to hit there is simply he bats right against the left and they didn't want the left on left. But Pesayo doesn't have great numbers against left, but Pesayo has an 800 runners in scoring position stat and oh, by the way, the runners in scoring position OPS this year for Navias is 272 and he's five for 15. So to me, that was a no brainer. You've got I know it's left on left. But Pesayo is is is a can you can make a one for one movie comes into catch.

19:42The Orioles are keeping three catchers with one reason to do that is you can pinch it for pose though and their bias, but they didn't. Now in the very next inning, they have a player that just acquired who Michael I said could be an impact player. Lewis Robert Jr. who had homerid in that game. He was not allowed to hit. And apparently the reasoning there was he was facing a right handed picture. They batted Pesayo then, but the game was already the red socks were up to then there were two outs and none on it. Pesayo homers, they're still trailing. So that puzzled me greatly last night. Moves in the seventh and eighth and I pointed out in my sub sack article today, then it lose that game because of managerial moves. They gave up for homers. They blew a three one lead. They got scored on in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth. They didn't hit for most of the second half of the game. There were plenty of reasons they lost to the red socks, but there are also some puzzling decisions. Steve, you totally gone off of the Luis Robert thing. I have to ask you're there. I joked about it when he got claimed off of waivers from the meds.

20:52If Luis Robert has a good month, do you think the Orioles bring him back on his $20 million player option? I would not rule that out because if you look at this season, the outfield offense has been very disappointing. Now, that is a gamble on top of a gamble for $20 million. So they're going to give him five as it is in this month. But if he's just a platoon player, I guess not. I don't know. How will you know in a month? What if he has a great month that still doesn't tell you he's going to be healthy and good next year. But I would not rule it out. And at least the option is there for the Orioles that they don't have to give up a player. They don't have to beat somebody in free agency in here. And get an outfielder who does have a silver slugger on his resume. I'll Steve Steve. Don't don't tell me that. I don't I don't I'm not even Orioles fan. I don't I'm not a fan of any team. I just don't know that like anyway, whatever.

21:58It's been a while since he's been good. It has been a while, but yet he did sign another $20 million deal this year. And the Orioles have said there's no such thing as a bad one year deal. So anyway, we'll we'll get to that. We'll get to that when when that happens. But is this team still a little miscast? Are they still playing out of a little unconventional because Westberg's out and you have Gunner Henderson who probably should be a third baseman. And Jackson holiday still trying to get his feet wet. Are they still a miscast team on the position side. But now they're starting to hit more as the halfway mark of the season on has gone better for them. I guess whenever this season ends and they evaluate it, it's going to be a difficult evaluation because what do you hang your hat on the rotation looks pretty solid and they've locked up radish and boss long term they have brand and young under team control.

23:01So that looks okay for next year. The bullpen if these are too big if if Bautista comes back and he's close and if he'll be as healthy next year, he's probably going to come back to the Orioles. You might have to decent closers to add to that bullpen. And then they got to work on the offense, which if you look at the broad stats, the Orioles are one of the top four or five scoring teams in the American League. If you watch them nightly, it doesn't feel like that because they had nights like in the series like Colorado where they scored nine runs, one of the worst performances by a visiting team of course field in a long time. So it's hard to evaluate. There's nothing consistent for this team this year. You know, I think they're pretty set in a rotation. The bullpen, the bulk of it is set, but they got to figure out their offense for 2027. I want to talk about one of my favorite players who I played with and now get to watch to Peter Lonzo, man, this guy has been absolutely fantastic. Can you just talk about him not not only as a player in the clubhouse and what he's brought to the Orioles team to get him into this picture right now where they're at.

24:12He seems too good to be true. What buddy is I mean, I've been in the club. I don't quite get what the mess are didn't see there. I just don't I mean the guy hits he leads. He's great in the communities already done things in the Baltimore community. He always says the right thing and it's not fake. It's it's completely sincere in every way. I mean, I've seen that guy in the Oriole clubhouse. You know, eight different reporters will come up to him and two or three team staffers with stuff they need and he accommodates everybody. It's just unbelievable. And so he's been a great leader for the Orioles. He's been everything they could have wanted. I mean, if it is a crazy to say 155 million is a bargain. I don't know with baseball. Maybe it is. But this guy's production. He's having his good years. He had for the match last year, which was tremendous. Yeah, big big loss by the match there, but big game for Baltimore, not just the team, but the city too. What is this? What is this rotation look like? Cause obviously we haven't really followed the Orioles as a playoff team, but they're even with the loss last night. They're game and a half out.

25:24What does this rotation look like going into a three game series and then possibly winning it to move on to a a division series. That's a five game series. Where did how does it stack up? If you sit here today and make that rotation. But here's what Steve would do, which doesn't mean what's what the Orioles would do. They have a four core four here. And anyway, you want to stack them a British Rogers, Bonds and young. And I don't think bass. It gets in the playoff rotation. Maybe he's a bullpen guy again. If they get that far. To me, Colorado, you still the best they have. He's starting to pay be tire a little bit. The innings are catching up to him. He only pitched 50 innings last year rehabbing his way back. Now he's a hundred over that. But he's the best they got. Yeah, Rogers has been on a real role one or two blips, but may you know, he's a three under three under three R.A. picture for about two or three months.

26:24A boss is really coming on in the second half and young that they win more games with him than anybody. It's hard to just that they're really very close. But I think I would go a British Rogers. Boss, I think that's what I would do. And maybe I branded young. He's coming in the fifth inning one of those games. Hey, I want to finish where we started. Adley Rutchman. So you got to cover him for a while. And this was a dream day one for him back in Baltimore. With him, I know going through the elbow this year and it might not be 100% just overall. What are the red socks getting here? You know, what makes red socks fans look at this and go, wow, I'm glad we made this move for the stretch run. Of course, he helped them win one game here and then for a whole another season. Adley must have made some winter adjustments. He's pretty tight-lipped about things like that. So he's not going to tell you why swinging it better this year.

27:29But his OPS was 760 with the Orioles. I know he hadn't hit with the red socks until last night. And so maybe now they get what the Orioles saw. So his offense trended way up this year. So did his defense was lauded all year. He was throwing out a higher percentage and he has in a few years. His game calling exceptional, framings, just scores incredibly high and some defensive metrics. So he was the total package for the Orioles and a switchheader, of course. And so, you know, the Orioles didn't play a lot of big games on his watch. So we don't really know. Is he a big game player for the red socks in October? I don't know. I guess we're going to see. But I think they got a good one and obviously he's a great teammate. He was a leader for the Orioles. And so I think the Red Sox will be happy with that. And I think the Orioles potentially seem happy with, you know, the science and has been incredible on their farm and Andy Asacar was just south at Lanarkly player the month at high A for Baltimore. And they like some of these young kids they got.

28:34Yeah, I like it. I like it for Boston. This is definitely going to help them and it's a league where it's tough to find a catcher like that. Steve, Malesski, thank you for joining us. I'm going to take Monday's Grant Holmes. I know that's going to switch now to Jesus, Lazardo. I want to watch Lazardo. I've been talking about him a little more easily on the program lately. And he's, I think, not getting talked about enough in our sport for the swing and miss. And to me, how that looks in the postseason could be a huge difference for the Phillies in a series. That sounds like a one. What? Yeah. You know, can I get a side of pasta, Lazardo? Like that sounds like a good Italian dish. Maybe I just rolled with this pasta. I like it. I like it. I'm going to game three because I want to see if the Philly. Look, when you go game one, you're going to face Chris sale in the playoffs. And you're like, whoo tough matchup.

37:28Kind of feel like kind of feel like Buckston has a higher ceiling than Mike trout for that's that's not some Joe Schmo like me saying something like that like Tori Hunter knows what he's looking at when he's talking about center and the game and it will always be tied to injuries my issue is if he's trying to get back out there for a team today on September 4th that's 3 1 1 1 1 2 back behind 3 other teams. Then it's probably what he's done most of his career like I'm trying I'm trying to stay out there and does that make the injury worse I don't know only him in the medical staff will know but I'd hate for him to stay out there on a bad hip and it becomes something else that then crops up later in you know next season that he kind of you know used too much because when something's hurting you have to mitigate it by leaning on something else and that's the last thing that you want you want him to be 100% healthy whenever he can be.

39:49Totally and to be honest you know who doesn't want to see the Astros in the playoffs the Yankees they still haven't beaten they still haven't advanced in a playoff where they have to beat the where they have to beat the Astros so that's just a fun story that could happen once it once it all plays out but if they're able to get this again I'll say it just like I said it before if they get the number two seed over the white socks that sets them up because that side of the bracket is just a weaker side of the bracket that is is going to be an easier path still good teams but it's an easier path but the Astros do it now they can set up their rotation now you can have Hunter Brown go game one and game five instead of game one and possibly if you win that series game two game three I guess you would be able to throw in game two and possibly not in game five so anytime you get your best pitcher to be able to throw twice when one of your weaknesses is the depth of your rotation that would be huge.

42:57It's going to help you either way. I would rather be playing games. I think there's still way. To have those teams still like they're playing meaningful games. You win those games. You've already been part of. Pressure situations. You know what I mean? You're going into a hostile environment, whatever stadium you're at. It's okay because I just played two or three hard fought games. I know what it's like. I think that's why I think that's my opinion. But ultimately you know that's why everybody loves the game. But I think the advantage is. Playing more games. But I do want to buy. That means we did better. Of course. Of course. But.
