Abandoned Wine Cellar Unearthed at Golf Club

The club, believed to be the fourth oldest in the country, sits on historic grounds where the structure once stood. Deputy head greenkeeper Steve Hopkins spotted the hole during his morning inspection and started digging, expecting a simple drain collapse. Instead, the excavation uncovered a brick chamber, packed with dozens of empty glass bottles in unusual shapes, likely hand-blown from long ago. The seller probably served Debi Home Hall, a manor house built by the home family in the 12th century and demolished in 1888. Robert Henry Norris, who inherited it in 1844, founded the golf club there before his death in 1887.
