很久以前，有位贤明的长者，他信奉佛法，精进持戒，后来因病去世。他的妻子儿女嚎啕大哭，痛不欲生。家人们虽然悲痛，还是遵照礼法，将长者的尸骨火化后埋葬。丧事办完后，家人们依旧沉浸在悲痛中，忘记了长者生前让他们诵读经典、学习佛法的嘱托，甚至连佛龛前都不再点燃香及灯烛，每月初一、十五烹宰牲畜，设肴馔、置酒食作为供品，上坟祭祀，在丈夫的坟前悲泣哀号，哭得肝肠寸断。
