A Tip For Remembering Gift Ideas

About this episode

For anyone who freezes when it is time to buy a meaningful gift, the fix is simple: capture gift ideas the moment someone mentions them. A quick note inside a contacts app builds an easy, searchable gift list for friends and family, so gift giving stops being a last-minute scramble. This habit turns everyday “I wish I had…” comments into personalized presents later.

0:00Why is it that when it's time to buy your friend a gift, it is impossible to think of something that will actually be meaningful to them and not just a piece of junk? And what can we do as a society to correct this problem? This is the bane of my existence, Ariel. I am terrible at gift giving. It is not my love language. I am not. It is not my circus. Certainly not my monkeys. I am bad at gift giving and the primary reason is I have a terrible memory for things people tell me they want. I just don't remember. And people don't go around walking, talking about the gifts that they want. But like, you hear people, they'll be talking and they'll say like, ah, I wish I had that thing. Or like, ah, I need to solve this. Like, you do hear it in your day to day with your friends. And then I forget. Well, a couple of years ago, I started trying to solve this problem by every time a thing in my brain went, they just mentioned something they might like some day. I write it down. I write it down in my little contacts app as a note so that later when I'm thinking, ah, I'd like to buy Ariel a gift.

1:02I can pop open the note and see what Ariel has mentioned in my presence as a thing she might like. And I can give a more personalized gift and I'm not freaking out making a decision on the fly. That's the tip. You know what else? You can remember later, Tip and Dale's. Go to our website, DailyTips podcast, nailed it. And tell us a tip that helps you in your life. We have a form there where you can submit. And we love to do guest tips usually on Fridays. You know, I'm just realizing Ariel. We're like almost two and a half years into this podcast. We really should come up with a different name between our guest tippers and the tip of Dale's submitted tips at Fridays. Did I call it a guest tipper? That's not right. Yeah, I do it every time. Right, we've got guest tippers. We've got Tip and Dale's. That's the general question. Tip and Dale's, can you please submit to us your ideas for names we could call tip and Dale's submitted tips? And it's not TSTs. That's not good. No. It's something else. Tip and tips is crazy.
