A reinstated amateur farce, Walker Cup preview, and flashback on Phil shenanigans

0:00Now the shotgun's starting golf is full of mathematics. There's a lot of set up work that we have to do in order to make a tournament work. So, I'm going to demonstrate to you just exactly how we do a shotgun start here. And here we go. All right, all right, all right. Determine! Start your engine! Greetings and welcome to a Friday edition of the Shotgun Start. It is September 4th, Andy. How we doing? Brendan, I'm doing fantastic. I got to say, I'm doing wonderful. Either heartwarming stories all over golf this morning. I particularly, I just was touched by the Mike Sposa winning the US Senior Amateur because, you know, he, what, what a commitment to the amateur game Mike Sposa has had throughout his career.

1:12All right, I'm glad you're feeling good. Honestly, Friday going into Labor Day and I apologize to our international listeners, you maybe just don't have a Labor Day. But I mean, Labor Day is a top three weekend, top two, maybe top weekend. It's the best. It's the best. I think it is the Friday. It's, it's God. It's football is on its way or college football is here. Weather is generally good. So, uh, chin's up. Hopefully we can bring a little whip around Friday. Well, chin's up for Mike Sposa fans all over the country too. This is a guy. All right. Can I just say heartwarming heartwarming story? You're referring to the US Senior Amateur emphasis on amateur. This is a Baltimore Country Club. It's been over the last week or so. It concluded this Thursday as of this recording in Mike Sposa beat Todd White, both of Spartanburg South Carolina.

2:13I believe their neighbors in the final. To win the US Senior Amateur story of resilience. Sposa almost got it done last year. It felt just short. Comes back this year and gets it done. And I just wonder how in the world he ever. Like how he had time to get so good to term and golf. You know, he he pledged a lifelong career on the PGA tour. Um, he made between the the, uh, the, uh, then nationwide tour and the PGA tour combined. Three hundred and thirty four starts on those two tours. Three hundred and thirty four starts. So that's roughly, I don't know, 12 years of service at the highest level of golf in the world. He made 176 cuts. So. Yeah. He made 90 PGA tour cuts. He made 86. KFT. He won on the KFT.

3:14What you would then call, I think it was a Nike tour. Maybe when he won it. A two million in earnings on the PGA tour. Last on the KFT. Obviously three hundred and forty's thumb thousand. But very different times. You know, yeah. You know, you just focus on three hundred and thirty. He was a soccer cover with David DuVal. Uh, he was a all American, uh, two time all American at Tennessee. This is just a heartwarming story of, of amateur golf here. So I, I broke down the math. You know, you're point, you got to play three hundred and thirty four seventy two whole stroke play events. Can I just, you said he was runner up last year. And then he wanted this year. You was a quarter of a 70 finalists. Okay. How long has he been at this amateur thing? One year. January, twenty twenty five. I believe he was reinstated just right back in it. Quarter finalists, wherever winner and set up. I think you said I said I finalist last year winner this year.

4:15So jumping right back in. Let's be clear. Not been, you know, work. It's okay. All right. So what else do you got? I'm not a mathematician. So I like to use just round numbers here. But I think if you pulled mid-amps. You know, if you pulled mid-amps and you said, hey, you're going to play in six seventy two whole stroke play events. In a year, they'd be like, I don't know where I'm going to find all that time is the general answer. So if you take Mike's poses three hundred and thirty four starts. It would equate, you know, he's a cedar. He's 20s. He's now 57 years old. So that would equate to thirty three and a half years of playing ten seventy two holes. Stroke play events per year, which it would be unheard of for any anyone with a real job.

5:16Doing I like frankly, I don't know if you could you there's you could get to ten. But you would bankrupt yourself and or be divorced. But anyways, that's that's the advantage of playing golf at a professional level. You get all these reps. And now he's still he still works in the golf industry. I you know, I I don't want to besmirch a man's occupation, but he runs like the Calaway junior development tour. So I'm sure he's getting out and playing plenty of golf still. But I want to cheers to the USGA. What a great what a great celebration of the amateur game Mike Sposa. Congratulations to Mike Sposa. I bet he feels really good, you know, after a light fall on career on the PGA tour coming down and beating up on some guys that work their whole lives. Not in cons, cultural auto birth into the USA ameter next year. This is not a US open situation. That is only for the US senior open.

6:17Podra go get the like so he gets a get to spot in the US am like, you know, Mike McCoy this year, right? And maybe it won't have the same sort of catnip cigar pick with the pie of all it then I don't think maybe maybe some Calaway branded merch or something. So yeah, he's in the US am I. Look, the senior am probably just on its face going to be more infiltrated with reinstated just at that age and that life, you know, it's like mid am's a good chunk senior am probably even the larger chunk. I don't know. That's just the theory I'm I'm cooking up here on the fly. But this is so far beyond the pale. 344 starts and I just I can't even shout about it. It's just it's it's on its face a farce. And I you know, I'm sure he's a fine person.

7:19But he just can't be reinstated ever. I'm just there's no amount of time. And you're not amateur author is a lifelong professional. This is such a disgrace. It's on I like I wonder how people of the USJ feel about this candidly. And how what the theory of restatement was here. Well, that that I'm wondering I mean clearly he hasn't been on tour. No, they had the waiting period had to be. It doesn't matter though. There's no waiting he played his profession in life was golf. I love that he immediately just went. So the reinstated boom like straight to through the bracket and then win second year. Are you look at that senior amp field that's like a lot of guys that honestly look like.

8:21You know, they look like memes if I'm being honest like though you know what like the reply guy meme. You know like conservative reply or the Florida State football fan the guy like grizzled Florida State football fan. That's what a lot of these guys look like in that US senior amp field. They're great, great players in their own right. Not the biggest championship, but it just sort of a farce. Just it just like is a greater encapsulation of what amateur golf has become. I don't know if it's a scooting in carts up there too. Everybody's in carts separate. It's been hot and humid here, but senior event everybody's in carts long week. I mean, the thing that sucks and in listen like any competitor in the field is going to be like I should have played better. I want to beat the best players in the world. You know, and I think a lot of people would look at it that way is like, OK, I don't care that he was a former pro. But just on its face like it just is. It's just shitty for people that like genuinely have maintained a really great golf game their whole life.

9:29And it's just like, well, like not being doing it for their entire like not doing it as their life. Their profession. Yeah, that's like the point that I feel like all reinstated am's, or reinstated am's miss is like. Oh, like while you were spending, you know, 50 like Mike Sposa 20 years of your life dedicated to figuring out how to get better at life. Or how to get better at golf. All these other people spent 20 years dedicated to some career. And golf was just like a small sliver of their life. And it's shame on the USGA for for letting the reinstated process get to the point where someone like Mike Sposa is able to play the US senior am. And and all these all these people like and not hey, if you're a competitor in the field, you're not going to complain about this. Like you're not because it's like, hey, I could go out and beat that guy.

10:31But like what a shame. And it's sad. It's not the biggest news stories. The US senior am. But it's just a encapsulation of of of where we're at with the USGA and governing the game. And this will come up in few weeks at the mid am again, you know, at the next level down an age group. So with one with the master's birth that everybody that is a former pro looks at and says, oh, now I can go try and play the masters. Right. Right. Other heartwarming news. This one. This is from across the pond. We have the only event that's ongoing outside of Walker Cup, which you'll do here in a second. The only pro event. Big one on our radar here is the Omega European masters in Switzerland. I'm getting words that this is just best week of a year on tour. Like it's in the town. You walk to everything. I don't know if it's not actually significant course, but certainly one of the most beautiful locales of the year. Ashen Wu is your early leader five time winner on the DP world tour.

11:32Ashen Wu, maybe maybe you should be on the peak cup. The Chinese pro. Shab Sharma in the running Patrick Reed is 12. Ryan Gerard struggling, but we're early at the Omega European masters. What I wanted to bring to note is. At crowns the caddy event is back on this year after a six, seven year hiatus. They do a big caddy tournament. It's like a Nicholas nine or something across the road big groups and they. The kind of cobbled together prizes and perks and for all the caddies and you know it'll be. Apparently Patrick Reed made a generous donation to the pie. We hear a lot about that Patrick Reed mean generous kind of out of you and contribute things. You know the local restaurants, a steakhouse in town, like chip in, you know, $500 gift certificate or something. And you'll have guys just chip in. Well, Sergio was solicited for a head. You know we're doing the big caddy event across the way.

12:33You know you're fresh off live and then you know probably nice pockets or you know I don't think that's what's the proposition. But Sergio would you like to contribute to the caddy event the the the perks or prizes said sure yeah yeah I'll think of something and came back. You days later or few hours later and what he donated was two dozen golf balls to the caddy event two dozen golf balls which the caddies all get for free themselves. Sergio obviously gets for free. I don't like cash donation from Reed or the script certificate from the steakhouse in town. You know, he donated two dozen golf balls to the caddy event in Cronz this week. But that's our just patch from the Omega European Masters which has quite honestly decent field between some of the live. Live refugees or outcasts and then few Americans and euros grind for points.

13:38Where's your rank for you on the Sergio Sergio stories throughout his career. I mean like right down the middle I mean pretty pretty bland it serves on the Sergio scale you know like between destruction of property and spinning in cops and you know that the comments about Tiger it's it's probably down the middle. But yes I love it it's totally unexpected unsubstantiated from the European Masters all right should we get to the Walker Cup the event of the week. The question of any of the week Andy this will be at Lich golf club in County Claire South dish Southwestish of Ireland Southwest of Ireland the bend there was there maybe 20 years ago different different time of my life I played this golf course. I visited my brother for like 12 days playing golf once and this was it well different time of my life but the hit different time. Third time it will be in Ireland it will be on overnight we did a little bit of this on schedule for the week the full.

14:43The full matches will be on TV started 3 30 in the morning we got. For four sums each day then eight signals eight little later 10 singles what's that late your coffee golf. Yeah 3 30 3 30 just I don't know I mean keep it five I don't know those four sums might be quickly. Yeah you might just jump in at singles I don't know it's up to you how committed to the bit you want to be. And awesome awesome setup I would say you know obviously they've. Sort of cracked the code on the venue situation right they've emphasized that and then held firm on where they were going to take this that adds to it. Yeah there's a little extra sizzle this year with a unique sort of back to back years there's some continuity between the rosters a lot of continuity between amongst the GB and I team repeat captains.

15:43I'd say there's like some real star power issue if that's you know you want to talk about that with you know amateur kids between miles Russell. Lots right to guys who are not yet 19. In the top I think they're both top five now some people say lots is a better player than Russell Russell gets all the pipe hype they're both they're both awesome. Tyler Weaver making his return highest rated GB and I hasn't played since April I believe ACC championships. I think they pair with the you're raining near the recent US. Opa USA amateur winner and Jack Whaley from Mary another Englishman at Florida State so I just think there's there's some player storylines the golf courses set up in the TV coverage is commensurate with what a lot of people. I heard what from this event it's kind of nuts that the coverage is much more substantial for this than the USA and I mean I'm not I'm not complaining when you think about it crazy it's combo of RNA rights and yeah but but I mean this is the way the USA M though should be to they should figure out how to do the I mean I don't get it.

16:56Yeah so what are you looking forward to they've got the two young lefties top five wagger. Lehnches obviously a world class world class venue. Yeah I mean this has been the year of miles Russell so much so that he kind of like overshadows Preston stout who's had like an incredible amateur career and is going to be. Yeah number one and PJ tour you and you know he's he's going to be going straight to the PJ tour so that's obviously you know one of the big story lines I think this is the best GB and I team that the US teams face in a while like they have a lot of like really really good players countergram who's played on a couple of these 19 is this is third Walker cup now we got the backfack years element but yeah. Dude I would not want to play that guy in a match he the hot head yeah he's got some red ass to him yeah and I and but then you have you know obviously Tyler weaver who's been hurt but is number two in the wagger you have Luke Polter who you know you probably see a lot of Ian this week.

18:06And then and then like Nile Donigan who's who's been a stud. So you know they have like a lot of really good players their mid amps really good player to gree hand. So I think I think this is we're in for probably like the best in terms of on paper competition they've had in a while and then Lehnches should be really fun to watch. The most famous holes at Lehnches are early in the round so if you want to watch this stuff like just catch the matches early. Because that's where the most famous holes the really like kind of crazy holes at Lehnches are. Four and five yeah I can tell which you hit up and over the mountains they're blind. Those are the two most famous there's there's several others and you did a podcast Friday Matt Roushis. I'll just add you know and I watched a little bit of shackle for its reporting what I heard from the ground early there was Preston Stout was trying to drive it over the hill at Klondike and apparently it was like 20 mile power down win.

19:10And they never found the ball but there was like this notion that it's been it's a par five normally match play whatever it is what it is but they may be driving it up and over for 75 I want to say taking it up and over and conceivably I don't think it's drivable but maybe up and over the the mount so. Yeah great great holes that are sexy for TV I don't think they're getting over that no I don't think anybody's going to try no. Yeah I know I mean it's four sums it's not four ball to be clear there's no four ball here there's one drive you know you can't just fix pure. So yeah yeah I like to back to the coverage point is it's crazy we're getting everything for this but we didn't get everything for Cyprus a year earlier. That right yeah that's right. I forgot about that which I mean so but it's I hope it's a trend for you know future walker cops where we get more and more and more coverage and more and more coverage of the US am.

20:21But this should be really fun like you're not going to know the names but these are you know you'll you'll be like oh I remember watching that guy in the walker cup and you know they're going to be. You know PTA tour winners and major winners from probably this competition and and that obviously like I think this new haggest at story is pretty incredible six walker cup six straight walker cup hasn't lost one yet has been an absolute demon and match play just in general. Like you know you talk about oh mid am this mid am that like I think a lot of years he would just qualify strictly off his own merit based off what he does if there was a mid am slot or not a mid am slot yeah he's 25th I believe way or I mean he's got he's got a lot of starts these you know been there for a long time now. I think the average ranking for us is somewhere in the single digits and then GB and I is around 40 but again really strong for GB and I they've lost five in a row but it's it's among their strongest team I believe agree hands on the Irishman on the team the guy from BALTRA mid am.

21:32It's early news from Brent Lee few others on site follow Brent Lee's work just shout out for him he does this be really well. A stomach bug is back no I don't know for a seminal levels but william Jennings and Ethan fein are down bad sounds like. I mean that's like it feels like as much a history of this event when you talk about the heat stroke the heat issues of you know Bernard Darwin coming over to national golf links 100 years ago seminal of course. Where was we were going to alternate at that point but i don't seem like it'll I hopefully it's not contagious but Nathan Smith said they'll be fine but they're down bad again the stomach bug walker come illnesses are back again. I'm. Apparently the greens are like insanely slow yeah because of salted yes so sticky. They're rolling like a seven or something allegedly right now i'm going to be tricky for some of these.

22:37I am Americans and they're all they'll play American college call many of them so. So should be great I love the weather may come it seems like it's warm based on what I tell it's warm but they're you know can kick up wind and rain I saw writer colon writer coon who I think you know this American team you should be you should be kind of familiar with with some of these names you know haggis that Watts stout Russell. Cohen you know low am at Chinatown and went deep at the US deep ish at the US am J Lang J Lang. I'm he's a guy on fire slapping away out there yeah he's out there i'm. But coon was hurt. On I think it was Tuesday saying i've never played in a rain jacket before so they're like trying to but could these young Americans get popped with some of the some of the the elements that can kick up there on the west coast of Ireland this is.

23:42I mean it's just it feels like the right people are in charge are at least keeping the guard rails up and protecting this event right there's always like oh should they maximize the. The commerciality of this there was that. You drive to make keepers of the cup where they were like trying to endow it with with pretty hefty six figure seven figure fundraising from small number of donors which is like a mic want thing of like this this which it endow this it's. To make sure it's i guess protected in perpetuity I took it to me it seems like it's a good TV property alone I don't what's there to endow it. What's there to endow to it's it can't cost that much money well people pay for the tickets like I don't understand how this old out money money loser sold out the scenes is going to be awesome I mean this is like a town that you can't just. You know pour out of the town and on to the ground of the fairways and.

24:42Yeah I never understood that I didn't know if that was like a one thing like this was like a of. A loss on the balance sheet that he wanted I couldn't understand that or if it was just really trying to protect it in perpetuity with some sort of rainy day fund I never understood that but there was less that's ongoing um that's it walker cup do you do you have a pick. I mean it's hard to pick against the US but six in a row for the US if they win it's like I think for the competitive balance of the event it'd be good for the GB and I team to win. The overall records is something like 49 and one or somewhere in there um yeah it would be good for GB and I to win would be good I think I think I'm going to pick the US though I think that's like just yeah I think it's hard to pick. US do they've gambling lines for this PJ you know if they have gambling lines for the walker cup is that well it's good thing they're disclosing injuries the PJ tour wouldn't tell you about the stomach dog.

25:47Well they weren't out there practicing is like where's where's Jennings and faint what do they do it like uh they just sightseeing today went to the cliffs of more. You know, you feel like you get you don't have as many date nights as you used to, but like you I forgot about like how much downtime you have when you're getting ready to go out. I see. Yeah. I found myself just sitting with nothing to do. So what did I actually I drilled into some peak cups.

32:13That's one does. So sea buzz. Cause I was looking at sea buzz has made 18 to 21 cuts this year, which is actually like a good barometer. And these match play events, you don't know what you're getting and what kills you is people that bring nothing. It's like one. It's like when Phil was in in France and unplayable. You know, you want people that like you legitimately know what they're going to bring when they go out and play. So I what caught my eye was like in this guy's made 90% of his cuts this year, basically, which is what he's played playing in PGA tour events. Basically, like the way I read that is that 87% of the time, 86% of the time, he's been in the top half of the field. It's make a lot of fours. Make a lot of fours. If you take this to the presence cup, he's going to be one of the teams.

33:20There, there's going to be better than 40% of the guys playing, which is good. I heard that short talent. So this is what I was I was barking up this tree. How you got from made cut percentage to 40% better than 40% like there's a long bridge in there that I'm not sure exists, but okay. Better than 40% of guys on the team. Okay. All right. Go ahead. He rolls out of bed and you know what you're getting from. Okay. All right. Stroke's game. I'm not a huge stroke. Good guy approach. He's 26 on tour around the greens 31st, 14th putting overall strokes. Gain. He's like 24th. Okay. Overall strokes. Gain. Yeah. Good underlying metrics. See best. I think see best is actually like one of the better captors picks. I've I've gotten my route. I've come around.

34:24You've come all the way around. All right. Any, you know, like the other thing is he played, you know, he's what what it was he in FedEx Cup PJ. You had all the number. I think it was like 90 or 96. 96. All right. 96 in the FedEx Cup was zero signature events. See, best is not getting sponsors exemptions into signature events. So he got no three points. Like like the vast majority of the list ahead of him. I mean, yeah, I guess can I counter with three? You're welcome to counter three of his six top 25s were an alternate field events. And the fourth one was the Zurich. Yeah, I mean, listen, you can poke all today. I just wise wise a damn statistic. He's making cut honestly to make a lot lot of a lot of T 20 to T 40s. All right. He's just. So I'm telling you in match. He can match.

35:24It's super valuable. It's match play. It's super valuable to know what you're getting out of somebody. I mean, that's what you're getting out of the best. That's fair. I will completely. If you put him against say it's like a one V one verse potty. No, I want no. I think that much as we love pie, I'm going to see best 100 times out of 100. I think potty should have been on the team too. But that's like what you're talking about. I think you could have put potty with sea bass and had sea bass playing from potty's T shots. Okay. But yeah, that's what that's where I'm at. I think like I think sea bass is a moral I will match play player than Justin Thomas. Yeah, you're now you're like just jump. But you started with the name cut percentage and you started jumping to all these great lengths about being better than 50% of the team better match play player than top at these grand proquemations. I don't know if I can jump all the way JT by the way.

36:26Man, his profile stinks for the statistical like you really look at it. I know he was pretty high on the points, but yeah, underwhelming. It tells you the points list isn't very good. Yeah, I think I'm both sick both instances because bez was he's afraid behind an ass cap that's this PJ told us and ask cap without the statistical profile. I'm sure. Sure. All right. Well, maybe at these pick I you know it's one of 12. The other issue is you know there's 11 other guys in the 11 you know 12 Americans are all top 25 players in the world. It's a it's a monumental challenge as a sports fan. I'm hoping for hoping for for for an upset quite frankly. I I I just read numbers the other day. I wasn't trying to trying to be a hater at all. This is big. See, bez is going to get like you said he's going to get the matches to 16 17 18 where all those hospitality tents are he's going to give the people something to see.

37:27Who would you who would you most like to see see bez knock off and like say I don't want to say a very critical like session deciding match or even got for. You know what see bez is presence cap record is I do this was cited. This was cited as a good Charlotte if I'm not mistaken. He's three one and one entry all three one and one yeah it's not nothing. Okay great. I love it. I love to see see bez take down Scotty we're back in put him up a guy. I don't like Scotty's a machine. I can't imagine it. It's not letting anybody. Um, what were the subject of presence? I think see best should play every session. All right. Here we go. You're driving the bus. This is the best. The best. The best. The best. Yeah. There we go. We're all in. Um, should we bring in Kevin Valkenberg for a flashback Friday on the presence couple are on this, uh, biennial match play competition.

38:28How do you feel? Not see best on the on the president's cup team. I didn't know I walked into a sea bez fan pod. I would have been better prepared. I would have gotten a t-shirt or a hat or something at least to sort of help, you know, bring the energy. Uh, but you know, I'll look into it. I mean, yeah, I'm excited. Is anyone? Uh, Kevin, are you everybody up there ball the more I know is just hailing the victory by the career amateur Mike Sposa today. Very heartwarming story. Yeah. Are they partying in the streets there celebrating the underdog story of, you know, that's what Baltimore country cup is underdog story. You know, the most elite country club in the area. What do we have for president cup flashback Friday today? Guys, I want to take you back to the president's cup of 2015, a time when we were all sort of getting into golf media. Probably the time when I met all of you right around that season. Yeah. Uh, so this was the first time the president's cup was ever held in Asia, kind of a historic moment, considering the growth of the game in Japan and South Korea.

39:33And of course, who could forget North Korea where Kim Jong Il made 11 holes in one that year. Obviously. Yeah. Uh, the event that year was played at the Jack Nicholas golf club Korea in Cheong South Korea. I spent a good, I don't know, 20 minutes trying to figure out today of Jack Nicholas named this club after himself or if it was named for him in his honor. Uh, and TBD still have not have been able to come up with a definitive answer. I gotta be the latter. There's no way I even jacked in. I mean, you never know. Brennan, you never know. I know it's, it's, I did read a lot of this is the only golf club named for Jack Nicholas in Korea. Okay. Okay. All right. Could be some other ones in China. Yeah. You know, maybe in America, who knows? Uh, I did watch a little bit of video, Jack's designing of this. He said, this was designed while he was in in my bumpy phase, which means it lots of bumps and rocks that sort of peek out through the course. Yeah. I love that. This bumpy face. Yeah.

40:33Uh, they basically gave him free reign. They drained an entire sort of like, uh, seabed kind of for him and then let him. Very artificial looking. Got him. We're watching this in the middle of the night. Very, I've vividly remember covering this early. Giant skyscrapers in the background. You know, Jack raving about the economic boom of South Korea that led her to this in the video. Uh, guys, the captain on the American side this year was Jay Haas, uh, and Nick Price was the captain of the international side. Uh, there was a little bit controversy this year with the captain's picks. Uh, do you remember this at all? It was a bill. Chris Kirk and Bill Haas, I want to say. Yeah. Right. Well, we'll get to that here. So, uh, that year, the international decided to go with Steven Boatich, uh, who, you know, sort of ran himself out of golf eventually. Uh, called and a young 29 year old young sang moon Bay. I knew Bay was on the team. Same moon. Yes. Now I bring up a Bay here if you call because at the time, he was facing Korea's mandatory two year military service.

41:40Yeah. Chires man of the age aged ages 18 to 35 to serve for two years in the military. He'd been appealing this for as long as he could trying to sort of get his career off, you know, he'd won actually two times in the PGA tour. But there were rumors that he had been peeling it so long that South Korea was fed up. Then if he returned to Korea at all, that he would be like taken directly to prison. So this was hanging over him a bit that season. And that year, he was finally able to negotiate with South Korea that he would serve his military service after the 2015 season was done. He said, it's a really, really tough thing. Almost all the time I'm thinking about it. I'm a professional golfer and I really just want to play golf, but it's mandatory in Korea. It's a little bit sad. So there was some sentiment that price pick him for this because, you know, there was a little bit of feeling that if even though you can avoid your military service in Korea, if you win an Olympic gold medal or an Olympic medal or a gold medal in the Asia games.

42:45And there was some hope, I think probably it's tough to find documentation of this, but I distinctly remember that this was a hot topic at the time that if somehow Sang-Woon-Bae could lead the international to a president's cup victory, which had not happened in 17 years, that maybe the South Korean government would look kindly upon this and excuse his military service. They've known to begin waivers for athletes do this as well came up later for Seewoo Kim and Sun Jae-Yam when they won gold in the Asia games. And by the way, Tom Kim still faces this mandatory military service unless he gets his exemption. So on the flip side, J-Hos had his own tough choices to make. You know, should he in 2015 take an up and coming professional young professional like say Brooks Keppka, who had won for the first time on tour that year, or perhaps Justin Thomas, who would not yet won but had seven top tens that year and had just recently finished 18th at the PGA championship. He even had another chance to sort of take go with youth when Jim Furek had to pull out with a wrist injury. No, J-Hos decided to pick JB Holmes with his first selection as an injury selection and his son Bill Hoss.

43:58And then the last pick, 45 year old Phil Mickelson was his final pick as captain's pick. Phil's results leading into this event, by the way, were T60, T65 and T32. But this was sort of at a time when Phil was seen as a very important to team chemistry. He'd never not been picked to be a part of these international events. He'd made every single team. And as we know Phil needs, you know, something to sort of get him going. So what better person to pair him with for these events than Zach Johnson. The Americans, as expected, get off to a great start on day one and so do Phil and Zatch. They win their first their match against Bodo and Jason Day. And Hoss decides we're going to run them back out for day two and they end up drawing Adam Scott and Jason Day. Now, this is international's best squad. So Phil was delighting in the idea of beating them on the seventh hole in J-Day number one in the world probably in the 2015.

45:02He'd won the game. Jordan Spieth was the number one player at this point. Jason Day was number two. Okay. All right. On the seventh hole with the match all square, Phil decides that he really wants to try to reach the par five and two. So he puts in play a firmer golf ball and hits his drive. But Phil being Phil, he decides after hitting this drive that he probably ought to check with the rules official to see if the one ball rule was in effect. Because in even though in his mind, he was certain that it was he felt that it was, you know, sporting to check. It turns out that the one ball rule is in effect at the president's cup or at least in this president's cup, Phil insists that in previous president's cups it had not. He forgot about this. So it's a great deal. The rules officials determined that he would be punished that their team would be immediately down a hole. And this caused a very interesting sort of rules controversy that not a lot of people understood.

46:02So it turns out not only was it wasn't like they lost that whole they played they were just down a whole period. But Phil could have kept playing on this seventh hole with this ball. He could have tried to make a birdie with this ball. And in fact, he did not he had picked up his ball in the assumption that he was out of the hole for good. Zach ended up making a five on this whole Jason day made a four. And so when that happened all the sudden, the Americans were down two holes after playing just one hole. They went into the hole with the match have they went out of it down two holes, which is kind of a crazy. So remarkably, he could have played his ball. Yeah, I understand what exactly why I could have kept playing his balls in that hole. I am unclear about that part of the role. Yeah, just you can keep playing the firmer ball and then you have to switch back or whatever, but. Okay. This of course leads to Mikkelsen and Zatch fight their way back and end up having this match, which leads to one of the great Phil quotes of all time, which is we spotted.

47:08We spotted their best team two holes and they still couldn't beat us just saying unprompted by the way no one asked him because he. He just this was his walkoff line in the presser that he wanted to make sure that everyone knew I got no impressions off the vine. I just my own my career, maybe the capturing that at three a.m. and one during the whatever this was. Thank you for your service, Fred. Yeah, I bring up the saying moon based stuff earlier because the session where Mikkelsen and Zatch were penalized, it seemed to spark the international. They ended up winning that session three and a half to one and a half and then they split the next two sessions after the two to after falling down for one in the first one. So the international is only one point down going into singles, which is pretty rare in the presence cup. It hasn't happened that many times and they fought like hell during the singles. They get wins by Adam Scott and Hadecki and Bodo and Leashman and Brandon Grace and it all comes down to the final match between Bill,

48:13and Ross and Sang Moon Bay were all tied up 14 and a half. So guys, I got to say Nick Price putting Bay out in this final match is some balsy shit. For multiple reasons, I guess like Jay, you know, Hoska to say, well, I wanted my son Bill out there in the final match because I knew he could get it done. I wanted to show him confidence and you know, maybe won't come down to that anyway. But like if the international is going to win, like every point is really going to matter. Not only like Sang Moon Bay, like in his first ever presence cup, but he's got this military service. Yeah, over it. It's the glitches the point and Mike would leave from two years, but which is the cop that's crazy. Now, if there's not a ton of highlights of this available on the web, but there is a few and you can see the crowd is kind of going crazy. Like it was like she's pretty intense and then I could see looking at that way like Price's logic of like the crowd is going to go bonkers for Sang Moon. Maybe like that will help him, you know, urge him on the victory. It was a big problem with the crowd and I'm sorry, I remember this honestly every detail this cup. I don't know why big problem with the crowd.

49:19That week because the like silencing your phone was illegal in Korea. And like there was like this clicking button and the Americans were losing their mind all year. We could all week because that the phone function was clicking so much and it became this thing. The crowd was getting in there were good crowds. So anyways, thank you for that. That's essential to this. So Haas makes a long birdie on the 12th to go one up, but but Bay hangs in there. He's got like a 20 footer for par on 16 and he is jars it. He's pumping his fist and the crowd is going bonkers. He's one down going into the 18th. So if you can somehow like, you know, get this point like, you know, turn flip this match and get a half out of it. Who knows like maybe this will be enough to sort of, you know, earn the respect of the South Korean military folks who will give him an at least like we'll have the cup, you know, I won't be a straight up loss. He goes for the par five green to and comes up just short. Haas goes for it as well. It ends up in the bunker. And Bay is faced with a into the grain uphill just nightmarried nippy chip.

50:26And just chunk, chunk, chunks it. I mean, I and it was it's like one of the great, I think sort of sad scenes and golf where he kind of goes down to his knees and puts his head in his hands. And later right after we're singing here on on the YouTube version, the caddy comes over and kind of rubs his back the way you'd like rub your kids back if they like mist a, you know, penalty kick that lost the game or whatever. Haas gets his up and down and bang and Bay concedes the putt and concedes the match. And then he goes on after this to serve his two years in the military. And he's never really the same golfer again. So Andy, I put this among Phil Mickelson's many victims that he, you know, just hurt people right now because he was responsible somehow for saying when base correct. It's more than military service that got sangman. Personally, no, I did one of the great Mikkelson quads of all time and one of the great scenes of all time. I mean, the middle of the cup, he's like talking crazy. She had publicly unsolicited like you said.

51:31This is low key a great cup. I mean, when you think about the stakes coming down to the last singles match, Phil, high jinks, it was just that four in the morning or two. Yeah, I remember watching that. I was out of buddy's wedding. St. Michael's Maryland. I remember this and I was like, I mean, I went to the wedding and it's like full swing. Yeah, I was like, I got like, like rub my eyes. I got it. Do I have to write something? Get vining out there. I was, you know, I wanted to find some of your writing from this. But of course, you know, it's lost the history and the box espionation machine. That's a great flashback. That was a low key. What? Okay. I throw another quick fill flashback. Well, objective. Maybe victims. I read this in Brentley, Romines, right up by Senator Kevin about the clock. We're going to talk about Walker cup in 1991. So there've been three Walker cups in Ireland. There was a Royal County down the famous Royal Cal down on 07 this year in 2026 at Lynch.

52:32And in 1991, it was at Port Marnick and Phil was on the team as was Mike Sposa, which we just discussed at the BCC. Mike Sposa. So it's Dave. Yeah. The end of the century. Michael Cindy fall. Others at Port Marnick. Um, this is from a Brentley's right up. Americans swept the opening four sums while Michelson also served up some controversy, making what he called the bad joke after being asked by a TV report about a wayward drive you hit into the gallery during competition. He said, quote, that's not a place I want to be. The Irish women are not that attractive. He said this after hitting a drive into the crowd. He later apologized. I knew it was in for the moment I said it. It was a bad joke. And I feel just terrible about it. Um, Irish love of rascal. This was sports illustrated. The Irish love of rascal. And somebody should have told Phil that last Friday night in Dublin. He was crawling the public rooms. Anyways, yeah. Red faced apologies for his youthful indiscretion.

53:32I mean, 1990 run, spend, uh, just maybe those. They were signs. Yeah. Yeah. There are signs. Yeah. Anyways, Irish women are beautiful. I got two Irish daughters. How dare you? There you go. There you go. Uh, Kevin, thank you for these flashbacks. Uh, thank you for taking us down memory lane 2015. Thank you. I got. All right. Talk to you later. Um, news real quick. 54:39He's going to do this. European tour players futures are contingent upon what the DP world tour does with conflicting event. They seem ready to budge the DP world tour seems like they got they smell blood and they're not going to just provide a back door. The DP world tour doesn't lose in their restrictions. All of them will live live live 2.0 proposed structure involves 40 players across 10 teams with 50 additional players added to each field in an open format. 90 man fields with $79 million per se and a cut for the bottom 30 30 players each week. I, uh, this seems so theoretical to me. I, I just if there's not, you know, event releases and they're going to get 50 open qualified. I want to know where all these people are coming from. I don't think they'll actually have trouble fighting the people. It's just going to be like, who are the people? 90 players. 40 of them are 10 teams and then 50 open qualifiers, $9 million per se cuts. I, I don't know.

55:49Can't Smith, DJ and Bryson, this is unconfirmed of what could be. Well, we'll maybe hear more about this. Are you excited about live 2.0? Not necessarily. I don't know what live 2.0 is. Are you more excited about 1.0 or 2.0? Um, it's a good question for different reasons. Maybe, maybe 2.0. Maybe 2.0. Just to see the circus. I don't know. That's news. The good good CEO is out. Matt Kendrick has been removed or left in the president. Yes. RBC Heritage Harbor Town confirmed for the championship series lineup. Another big market. Seems like the Canadian open is going to the fall and it'll be a national open. And you know, they'll be able to have the Canadians in there.

56:49There won't be roadblocks to having Canadians who can't play challengers or can't play a championship. Seems like the RBC maybe bumping that to the fall and keeping it a true open. But yeah, Heritage Haynes on Harbor Town championship series lineup Tiger Woods license is suspended for five years as part of this plea deal. The big drama out of this or was can you still take a cart? Can you drive a golf cart in the sheriff? I believe or someone in the maybe the prosecutor's office were unsure, unclear if he could do that. I think it's since been confirmed he can drive a golf cart, but I was just I was not just the Santa's waiting on the. I was envisioning a whole corner of the Orange County Convention Center by January having some sort of best case solution for driver's license suspended and have debilitating injury and can't walk. Here's what here's our gizmo to get to get you through this this set of circumstances.

57:50The Tiger Woods set of circumstances. It feels like a PGA show booth just waiting to happen a little scooter who knows what some machine powered gizmo. That does it.
