Good afternoon. How did you know? And the guy who were not sure whether he's incredibly skit see or one of the best acts

1:01as we have seen, David Binley. Good morning. I mean, it's pretty obvious, Logan. If that quote doesn't date this season, I don't know what will. Yeah. I genuinely don't think I've ever heard of first test confessional, but basically Earthquizz is someone of schizophrenia. Other than 90s. So first question as always with historians, why are we doing this season rather than Sri Lanka's fuzzies desperate for us to do at this point? Well, we were looking at the list of like, medium seasons that were left, because like, we've done all of Belgium that we can really do. For Vieta, there's not a great deal of options left. Like, there's, you know, the civilian seasons that aren't great. And then basically just South Africa, Sri Lanka, Oman, and Portugal. Like, we've just watched a Portugal season, not particularly in the mood to go back. Oman's a little bit of an issue because of the way it's sort of set up. And then sort of, so basically when we looked at South Africa and Sri Lanka, and like,

2:04I don't really want to do either of them just yet. So that's one thing. And also last year we did Northern Ireland Jordan and Iceland's bad. And both of them kind of felt like we were mining content out of other seasons, and we didn't really want to have to do that again. So, yeah, we got that. And then we sort of looked at, you know, maybe we do like, sort of try to work out Oman, and they do like frances as a smaller season just to, you know, break it up a little bit, and couldn't make that work. And then we thought, I've just been to Tasmania. I've seen most of these places firsthand. Why don't we do this one? Plus also, this is sort of the most moral historian of historian seasons. Yeah. Because this was the first English language one. This was one of the very first seasons of Molleva. It's one of the very first seasons of reality TV ever. Yeah, I was just looking up at predated survivor Borneo. Yeah. Three months or something. And somehow there is still new story developments happening 26 years later to this season.

3:09But we're not getting to that for another eight episodes. Yep. Unfortunately, I had to mix the joke from this episode because I remembered we are not talking about that until the finale. So, yeah, I looked at that just before we started recording that this aired between, I think, was February and May of 2000, which means it would have aired on TV while survivor Borneo was still in the middle of filming. So I assumed the filming date was probably towards the end of 99 for this season. It started January because there's a challenge lighter this season than the Australian opening. Oh, so just missed out on being in that very limited category of reality TV seasons that filmed in the 90s. Yeah, so they can't remember like the exact date. I did work at our one point because you can kind of work it out from, they go to the tennis and you can see who's playing on center court and you can work it out from that. Let's be on the side. I'll end up working out when we get to that episode. Oh, yeah. How about telling you?

4:10Freebing us, graphic, fuzzy, can we go? Yeah. So you can kind of work it out. It's basically sort of middle of January. They do it. And then it premieres like the last weekend of February or something like a couple of weeks like the Sunday night or whether they were already on the Wednesday night, but like one of it's one of those two days. It's basically like the last week of February that it starts. So they did not have a lot of time to edit this. I don't know sort of what the like the lead up time for the auditions and all that sort of stuff was, but from filming to airing is only about six weeks. Really, only about four weeks once you consider they actually had to film the like get to the end of the season before they start editing and all that sort of stuff. Which is surprising given it wouldn't have been that easy to edit back then with the limited technology that they would have had back in 2000. Yeah. Like, I'm not going to say this season holds up as well as what we've come to expect. This show can be today, but considering what TV was like in 99 in 2000.

5:15This is a really solid season. I think this season honestly probably has a better storyline than the first of I really. It's just, you know, nobody remembers it because it's a short season that hasn't really aired anywhere else. Like it got rerun a few times in sort of the mid 2000s and that we're watching sort of one of the rerun copies that has a couple of like little edits and things taken out. Like we don't get to see the opening credits again after this episode. I think I come to the finale or the reunion. One of them has a montage set to it had to be you from Harry Connick Jr. and I think they cut that out as well. It might even be both actually because I think there's one for the winner in episode A, one for the mole and episode nine or the other way around, but they cut that out and I think that's basically the only thing we don't get to see this season. But maybe gloss honestly. Didn't they use that song and subsequent mole Australia seasons for the reveal? So they used to definitely season one and two. I thought they used it in three for some reason.

6:16I can't remember what they used in three. Season four they used suspicious mountains and I think that might have been the first one first time they changed it. You got me wondering now, I'll go and watch the finale of season three after this and I'll like you know next time we record. One fascinating thing about watching a season of a competitive reality show from over 26 years ago is it's not in that refined, super refined cookie cutter quality that makes all seasons of more recent reality TV shows seem so similar to each other where it's where it's such a set structure. There's there's a certain charm to it and especially without just basic things like how different the technology was back then what they were still able to do. Only IBM thinkpads. Yeah. Yeah. The way that I summed it up in my notes is that I know that the skydive is like the big challenge of hilly mole seasons and the big budget challenge of hilly mole seasons

7:17but it does genuinely look like it's a fan created version of the mole. Yeah. It looks like there is a prize of $200,000 and it was created for $200 and it's so charming. Yes and then I want and then last year I watched the first season of the mole New Zealand and Spongebob watching comparing the two premieres for both franchises and more Australia. It still it still looks like it was really low budget but my god compared to the premiere episode of mole New Zealand and that looks like it was filmed for $2. It probably was because they could not afford to do skydiving in the mole New Zealand. They went to Queenstown and they couldn't afford to do any adventure sports. They did I think the probably the most expensive task they did in mole New Zealand was the bungee jumping I think that they did an episode is either episode one or two they did that in between the professor lighting puzzles that they did in mole New Zealand. I'm probably going to end up mentioning this whole season.

8:18I've just sort of obsessed with our low budget this version is for a version that has such a high-prized amount. It's so delightfully low budget at times. Like I know there's you know things that sort of carry over to other versions of this show like Vetter was using Comic Sans right up until El Salvador but like there's a lot of things here that sort of feel like okay we're just going to try and model through and work out how we're going to do this and I think that's just charming honestly. Now that we're sort of in an era where really all of the major reality TV shows have been on for 15 20 years like I would say the last really big new reality show aside from the traders is Drag Race which is up to season 1920 at the moment. I think it's sort of charming to watch a show that sort of hasn't had all of like the edges tweaked out of it like tech survivor you know it started off with you know really sort of rustic we're going to build challenges out of leftover wood that's on the beach or all that sort of stuff and now it's basically just we went down to a hardware store bought some planks.

9:19I think sort of once you like lose all of those sort of rough edges you it starts feeling a little bit more artificial and polished and all of that sort of stuff and a kind of rubs it of the reality aspect a little bit but I think this is one of those seasons where you know you can still see all of that stuff you can see like production you can see like the boom mic operators in the background all of that we even get you know a shot of the the camera guy being arrested this this episode or you know getting a parking speed ticket and I just think it's nice that they're you know okay yes we're still trying to work this out and that's okay like it doesn't like if you saw a boom mic operator in the background now you'd be like okay why didn't you you know retake the shot or you know go use a different angle or whatever who's being medically evacuated yeah yeah like I like that all of that sort of stuff is just left in the episode because you know it makes it feel like this is an actual thing that's just happening and

10:20we're just watching it it's the same sort of vibe as the behind the scenes is offering on Belchia this year like you have the the more polished version occasionally you do see some of the more behind the scene stuff on the make on the main Belchia show but now that we have the behind the scene stuff you see a lot more of their downtime and how they film stuff and how they sequester the contestants on certain challenges that sort of stuff which I think makes the show a lot more charming like we're recording this on the eve of episode six of Belchia so we still don't know who the mole is some of us probably still don't know who the mole is at the reveal spoilers. Choo choo yeah choo choo but I think maybe the polishing of the shows generally has probably made them worse because yeah you expect a professional show but it's a level of activists that they're occasionally it's challenging to see when it's there. I'm set transition from making it a competitive reality show into more of a game show feel like how linear say amazing races or especially

11:26survivor now where they've set high production value but yet they have to decrease the production value of everything else just because they have that set procedure essentially yeah and it makes me think of the first season of other competitive reality shows for instance Vittem survivor and Amaci drinks they all had that same documentary feel in their very first season and it's interesting to see this with the mole Australia as well where you get that documentary feel that a lot of shows typically ditch after one or two seasons. Well I'm going to date point of view I have a look to it up do you know how long after Vittem started this premiere aired? Not very long because it was the maybe like two months because I think that first season aired sort of 99 2000 was like like over Christmas New Year. It was the 19th of November 1999 and this episode that we're talking about today aired on the 27th of February 2000. So yeah there was no real template other than the Flemish

12:31version of this point. Yeah. The OG. What show I was assuming was not easy to obtain copies of that in 1999? No I suspect even geo says he probably didn't have this show at that point sort of this. Yeah I know from sort of you know just reading interviews over the years that they basically the producers of this went to Mipcom the festival in Can't Where They Sell All These Sulla Shows and basically like sat at the little booth and watched one of the episodes of Flemish Mall and you know even without subtitles all that sort of stuff just watching that episode was enough to be like okay we need to buy this and my feeling is seven probably got on board basically because they knew these producers were going to handle it well because they'd done Hudez Winds which was all of also in that weird that weird gray area where it's like not quite a game show not quite reality but like you can see how you get from like Hudez Winds to sort of fear factor those to it

13:32very similar shows and I think you can see how you get from Hudez Winds to the mall as well because like you know sort of action adventure and all that sort of stuff like I can see sort of how it got onto seven when it did and you know with the people it didn't all that sort of stuff maybe not so much sort of how it evolved in later seasons because I think later seasons that sort of started taking ideas from let's say versions of this show that didn't know what they were doing um hello Americans but yeah like this this first season like you can you can see that a lot of it is okay we're gonna take the show bible from Belgium's first season work out what we can do in Australia what location we can do in Australia kind of feels very similar to I guess France I think it was France the first one one of it's bad what event France yeah so like I'm fascinated by why they chose Tasmania because I think like I think sort of with the first Belgian season

14:37you know I think they picked France because I it was cheap and close and all that sort of stuff but also like there's just enough of a culture shock that you know the Dutch speaking Belgian people you know would feel like a little bit uncomfortable there and I think sort of given the budget channel seven had in 2000 when it was basically on the edge of bankruptcy I can see why they picked Tasmania because like you go down there you you can feel it's Australian and all that sort of stuff but also like it feels like a completely different place as well a lot of the time and I think that's a sort of interesting thing that you can't maybe like doesn't come across quite as what one screen is some of the other stuff in this in this season but I think they did a really good job sort of tie in the challenges to Tasmania which I don't think a lot of other moral systems do like even you know little challenges you don't think of as being particularly like culturally relevant they managed to tie to Tasmania in a way to be like okay you can't do

15:39this anywhere else like they do like an overnight interrogation challenge and they do it in like a haunted 19th century prison which is really cool but like I don't know you could have done that on the mainland or you know in New Zealand New Caledonia Thailand where wherever else would have been affordable I think they do a really good job making Tasmania feel like the 11th person this season really like the only thing they missed is like for all they you know really tie into the location it kind of feels like a lot of the you know the places like something like Vittin will do today where like they go to you know like the nice scenery and all that sort of stuff like they don't really do that like they they they stay mostly to like three or four small towns well you know small and like comparison like they spend a lot of time in Lonsesta and they spend a few episodes in straw on they end in over and then there's like an episode in Richmond sort of towards the end as well but like they don't really do like even in Lonsesta which is you know it's like a decent size

16:47you could do stuff there but like I feel like they sort of it feels like a very suburban sort of area in like in the episodes where like you wouldn't know sort of from watching this that sort of like five minutes walk out of the city you're in Cataract Gorge which is one of the most beautiful places in Australia and I think if Vittin had been there like if Vittin had filmed this season I think we probably would have got a challenging Cataract Gorge maybe it might not have been you know an exciting challenge it might have just been you know you know relay the message from person to person whatever but I think they would have used the scenery a little bit more and used like the actual like history of the place a little bit less but I think sort of maybe because you know it's in Australia and so I think they're sort of trying to find the balance a little bit because you can't really say okay we're gonna go to Tasmania and then we're gonna do stuff that has nothing to do with Tasmania because like everyone will see through it like it's like when Belgium went to Germany you know you didn't really do a lot of the challenges around like the German stereo types really

17:52aside from that music video one like you know they they tick off you know the German stuff like the Kuku Klux and you know Minix Olympic Park and all that sort of you know they tick off you know German stuff but they don't really do it in a way that like feels cartoonish and I think this sort of hits that a little bit like it's a really strong showcase for Tasmania and you know it makes it makes it look really nice to visit but it also manages to sort of leave enough behind that you be like okay if you go down there you're gonna find some more stuff as well which is sort of something we don't often get from this show presumably there was an element of local quotas as well yeah possibly I presume that sort of tipped their their hand on where they were going to film it if they were deciding between somewhere cheap and southeastern and somewhere a bit local I bet they got more money for filming in Tasmania it was obviously as we see in the credits certainly helped by the Tasmanian tour response yeah I don't think that's an accident Tasmanian Tourism Board

18:55the France of Australia the other thing I was thinking of when you were talking to Sennis I know we've talked for years and years about finding a way I go going on this podcast I would be fascinating to find out how the development of Moll UK came off the back of this season because if they were still pitching a mickom the next year that's probably when Channel 5 saw it given the dates on how UK Moll worked so that would be very interesting I think to find out what what the connection was because presumably once Moll Australia had had a season that was the one that they then showed at Mipcom rather than the Belgium earlier Bindle said there was one thing missing from this season I thought he was going to say ball Ryan as host but in all seriousness grand baller is perfect for them all he's excellent he has that mysterious quality that a lot of

19:55if you look at say all amongst the hundreds of things that was wrong with Netflix Moll they never got that mysterious host in either of those two installments and that's what you need for the Moll you need that host with that mysterious quality to it but also able to relate to the contestants and actually properly fit in with the contestants without being cringe and also not make a bunch of party jokes or offend locals just because you think it's hilarious so grand baller checks all of those boxes in contrast to about Ryan yeah it goes back to the theory that we've always talked about of early Moll hosts being police chiefs of various stripes yeah I will also say it's very distracting being used to grant from Amazing Race now going back to watch Grant in Moll Australia and him whispering everything he's so softly spoken in this episode even compared to Amazing Race yeah he's like Tony

21:00Almeid in 24 yeah it's like proto-grant baller you can see the the sort of genesis of all the Amazing Race stuff in it yeah but he's a completely different grand baller in this in this version then he was in Amazing Race which sounds like an obvious thing to say obviously but you know you can see where he he got a lot of the Amazing Race hosting out of that was just his episode yeah I think with this season like because he was mostly famous before this for playing a cop on Blue Healers I kind of won he left that show but I would have been just before this I think because he's you know had that sort of background he sort of used that to inspire how he did this role where whereas like for Amazing Race he had this as his background he's like okay this is how I be a reality show host that's what I'm going to do for Amazing Race and I don't think it worked quite as well there it's like you know when you take a photo copy of a photo copy you you start getting those like weird little like it starts being faded and you get the weird lines at the edge of the paper and

22:00all that sort of stuff I presume that he didn't know who the mole was this season from what I understand yeah that's correct yeah because that's another sort of early mole trope is that the host doesn't know yeah from my memory I think he knew season four but that was the only one he got told yeah that's what I remember too I think Glenn certainly didn't know for the first series of UK for the second series he only knew when he had to be involved in the clue I think yeah but I think he's up to the the host themselves as to whether they get told or whether they want to play as a player like PT ended one other question I have is when did you guys originally see this first season I couldn't even tell you it was years ago like I didn't watch the first couple of episodes but I think the first episode I saw live was episode four where they go to the island Spinal and I they're already on the top's main island when the raining players have to go back to

23:01test media yeah like I can't come up like why didn't watch the first three episodes but I definitely watched episode four I think somebody recommended it to me um and you know I basically just watched every episode after that and now you're stuck with me for me I think I originally what I originally watched the second season because I think that was the first copy I was able to obtain and then after that I watched season one and then I think three then four yeah I think this sort of surfaced around the same time all the victims started coming out to be honest which would have been sort of 2011 yeah yeah I think I watched these seasons in 2009 I think it was I think it was right right in my final year of high school I think I think we've covered this topic for all of us before talking about a season that air 26 years ago good point one made so any more preamble thoughts before we actually start talking about the episode I think I think we covered every topic I had in mind

24:07I'm good the last thing I have to mention about the season generally is it's a very old cast the average age is 36.4 and I know that shouldn't surprise me but it is which is funny to think about considering there is a contestant on the season who is 18 yeah and then the next youngest is 27 yeah Abby brings the average down by quite a lot I think that's partly sort of a side effect of hair like cast it says because they basically just put an ad in like a bunch of newspapers because like every city has their own newspapers so they put in ads in the newspapers which excuse old anyway because you know young people don't read them certainly don't read the ads if you even if they do open any newspaper but like they only had 900 applicants for this season and I would say this cast is probably one of the strongest cast I've ever seen for a first season of a reality show which is kind of surprising like really the only weekly here is James

25:14who goes home at the end of this episode like everybody else is delivery and I think considering how few people they had applied for the show and like people would probably drop out at various phases of the audition process they get a really good job casting this yeah if you consider the traitors UK had 1600 I think it was for its series and they actually specifically said what that show was in the application yeah but this is of the era where they are casting from newspapers because Moe UK did the same thing Moe UK's ads were listed as adventure challenge yeah you mean Beverly wasn't cast because she had the most Instagram followers not this time maybe nowadays now that she's not only fans oh god she'd be 81 Michael I mean you laugh but she's genuinely a six therapists now I know that's why I made the joke

26:15what's interesting about all aside from Beverly's current occupation is the complete diversity of everyone's occupations on this season which is also a product of very early 2000 reality TV again when you don't when nobody's being cast based on their visibility on social media or the internet it's just we're casting you based on you on your personality and maybe a certain physical appearance that we're looking for and that's about it like there are no I don't think anybody here listed their job as a model or an actor we have computer programmer school services officer winery manager fine food merchant I think fine food merchant is kind of works at a delim I am sure that when James came to them as a compiecia programmer they praised God because he looks like every fedora wearing computer programmer the internet has ever warned me about

27:18does he ever take that hat off in this episode no and it really makes me laugh throughout this entire episode that all I can think of is the meme of how do you do ladies and the guy tipping the fedora whenever he's on the screwing and I know it feels really mean to start off this season by taking the piss out of someone's clothing choices and appearance but Jesus Christy looks like a stereotypical computer programmer so we begin at the end on day 18 in poor Arthur professional cheetah wrangler grab mollus says that this is the story of 10 strangers 10 people who set out for an unknown destination where most of them would be eliminated of the three that made it one would walk away with nothing one would leave with a great deal of money and one of them is the mole I did it better this speech is like so hard to memorize I like he must have taken at least two or three takes for this it's like I had it written down I was trying to film it on my phone when I did the

28:18because like I used this speech when we were planning on doing the announcement for Iceland's Bay I've actually recorded myself doing this speech at the top of Mount Wellington where they do one of the challenges in the final episode and genuinely like it's only about like 50 words or something but I could not get like all the words right it took me about four or five shots and like for granted to do it this well and this confidently is really impressive does this season do the first words clip no I wasn't sure because it's a very deliberately worded speech yeah I have to check but I think I think it's sort of largely translated directly from the Belgian version yeah like you know obviously there's you know changes it's not 10 Australians or whatever but I think sort of you know bits and pieces of it are from the Belgian version and then sort of you know build the restaurant to make it sound decent in English the nine contestants who were selected from the literally 102 answered a newspaper ad I love how they phrased it just the from from the 102 answered

29:23this newspaper ad while the mole was selected by the production team and interestingly we get full names including surnames in the credits which 100% would not happen now because American fans would be trying to fire upon their workplaces and he can tell this is all because even aside from the newspaper ad and the surnames and all that sort of stuff they're flying in on an asset which like basically shut down you know a week after 9-11 like 2002 it shut down I've just googled it I love that they sort of do the setup with them all planning to Melbourne and like three of these people are from Melbourne so like they've just gone to the airport got picked up in the bus and then been taken to another airport just for no reason I like how empty the bus is that's to note to me but they have this enormous bus but like the only the front quarter the front turn of it has anybody sitting in it yeah I assume that's a budget thing like I figure maybe that they shut all of the cast all of the crew over to the airport first and then went back and got the

30:26cast and so they just used the same bus twice like that that would be my guess but then also like all of the the crew who are at the second airport have to go back to the first airport to get to their flight so my favorite thing about this this bus ride is the fact they are using the world's smallest television on the bus the de-grants in turn from and reminds me of my sister's TV growing up where I assumed the reason why all the contestants had to sit at the front of the bus is probably because the speakers on that TV were so quiet that the only way they hear it is if you are right up to where the TV was genuinely when I was a kid we went from Sydney to Melbourne by bus we sort of went up somewhere I was like I think by trying and came back by bus and we ended up sitting like two three rows away from the driver and we could not hear the screen like these TVs are not powerful at all what I suspect probably happened is they didn't actually pipe grants message in they just got produced at the stand at the front of the bus and explain it to them probably because

31:30also if it was actually recording on the bus that's surprisingly good picture quality that was coming out of that television did you like Ben some sight full quote after we learned what the challenges it's a guessing game yeah anybody could be the mole it's a bit of a guessing game my favorite what is the the subtle one from Jan which is just is there a different bowl every challenge what does she think this is trapped the more New Zealand I think I think we had this discussion last year when I was watching it but wasn't the case with more New Zealand is that nobody really knew what the premise was until they started filming. Moan you Zealand nobody really knew what the premise was including production and indeed netmull so they are on a coach in Melbourne getting to know each other grant comes on the telly and tells them that they will be taking part in a series of challenges to win money for the group potentially up to $200,000 amongst them though is a saboteur the mole who will be trying to stop them winning money also whoever knows least about the mole will

32:33be eliminated at the end of each episode now are you following a lone Logan oh you know based on how the pools have gone this year you would think I don't quite understand the show that is a joke I've been making on discord today so I'm sorry I genuinely I'm surprised the last couple of weeks you haven't suspected and do you have brain them all so they are dropped off at Melbourne's escondor airport where grant awaits them he tells them their first challenge is very simple and worth $10,000 all they have to do is fly to Tasmania and land before the plane does which is the traditional English language wording of this challenge to win the challenge or ten of them mascara dive and landed Tasmania there will be splits amongst four plates this is as traditional of an opening challenge as you get on the mole yeah I'm pretty sure the UK wording was land before the plane does as well yeah I think what's interesting here at least through a 2026 perspective isn't so much that the challenge is like a great showcase of like strategy or the

33:38mole being able to sabotage but they do such a good job of highlighting that actually this is fucking terrifying you know the most terrifying bit of it the flight is an hour they have an hour of sitting there going shit them about to skydive yep I like the one skydiver that just taunts Josephine the whole time are you are you are you gonna do this are you sure are you sure you don't have to do it can I want to all right are you sure she's out sit it just yes I'm ready are you sure are you scripted no and I'll script in yet and then he pushes I hear take these goggles I don't know why but him throwing the goggles at her just made me laugh harder than it should have I don't think he's as surprised as I was but Joseph feed his my favorite this episode yeah just like Josephine is legendary like I know there's like running joke and really TV fandom that like most reality shows the female cast is a lot

34:44stronger than the men and you know that's definitely true here as well but Hollis should even buy like female relevant cast standards you know against Jan and Linda and Beverly and Abby Josephine is a fucking star yeah she is as good as he'll do I would say the other thing is if this challenge should have been done in a season I don't know 10 years later when she was on her own in the plane she probably would have got a personal offer for an exemption to know Skydive I will say whoever divided the plans up and made Josephine take the plan on her own when she was the most nervous is an evil genius for an hour yeah normally for these Skydive challenges is like 20 30 minutes tops they had to fly for an hour whilst worrying about it and then Skydive after that yeah and not even let just for an hour it's an hour over water as well like if something happens during that hour nobody will find the plan like for probably three days yeah especially not even like best

35:48rate which is one of the most dangerous like bits of water in the world maybe it's the record they had to find in the first episode of netmull maybe could slightly last but it's interesting to see like because these Skydiving challenges were in every reality show for a few years yeah especially Mason racially this was their tradition every single season for the first 10 seasons had to have a Skydiving challenge for the most part then everyone said well everyone always jumps why why do we still have to see this exact same challenge every single year in every single reality show and then eventually now it's just once every few years the show will do a challenge like this but this was the like season premiere staple back in 2000 it's like not to go back to fear factor again but it's like sort of you know the first season you know you can get away with oh they're gonna eat worms or whatever by season 5 or 6 when everybody knows what the show is you know and they go in expecting that then you've got to you know come up with like the really weird sort of

36:52like animal organs to make them eat or if you want to do a gross feed challenge I think it's sort of like a victim of sort of that sort of like a feature creep where people go in and they're like okay I'll do a skydive I'll do a bunch jump whatever what else you got and now they're having to come up with like really sort of wacky challenges and like you know sometimes wacky works like when Belgium does it but I think this challenge probably would be too basic these days yeah I'm genuinely interested to find out what they're gonna do for season 2 of fear that's how to fear yeah because we've not discussed this on the live episodes so I'm not even sure if someone has seen any of it but it was actually surprisingly good despite basically coming in with a lot of genres savvy a lot of their wrinkles that they did for the challenges were actually pretty pretty interesting and in fact it was such a success that doing a two episode spin-off sometime this month I believe 48 hours of fear where it's six people and five challenges basically reruns of some of the interesting ones from House of Fear but with

37:55wrinkles too one of which is getting covered in bees but yeah it's it's already been recommissioned for a season two and I'm kind of interested as to how they're gonna escalate because a lot of the stuff that they did was was actually quite fair factor for the 2020s yeah but not in a drowning phone's way I think you touched upon a good another point about why these really early seasons of competitive reality shows are compelling too is that not only do you have contestants who aren't cast just for having a social that for a social media following that that doesn't factor into it at all but you also have contestants who have no idea how the format works for the first season of these different shows like they're not they're not even going to anticipate that sky-diving is the potential option just the possibilities are endless in terms of what you can do with them in contrast to say survivor 50 where it's okay we're going to divide you into you know two or three

44:09make it the rower eye pack and save joke for the challenge guide which Michael gets and look at this knot and there is a guy who found who packed a huge pack of condoms in his bag and New Zealand as well that was shown on screen for a few seconds where they weren't joking about that I mean it's not much better than the 15 protein shakes I love how he's the one who feels violated in this jelly Chad has a luxury talk about it he's like but my protein shakes now everyone knows why don't have a neck there's there's a very sort of funny little side gag at the start of the challenge where just in the first bit where they're like the the repackers are repacking their own bags James grabs like he's back out of the car and he is very angry about this like I don't know whether you you picked up on it but like you see his face and he's like what the fuck did I just get myself into I can only pack two fedoras instead of seven all of my fedoras are computer balls

49:25him for what 10 hours at this point if that or when they had to say what item they had they guessed wasn't being repacked when rocky says oh my protein shakes so then Grant says can you be more specific because that's like 90% of their life which one yeah otherwise we're just giving you $5,000 we have to make this somewhat challenging rocky the best the best thing is he makes rocky specify that but Abby is able to get away with just saying a pair of shoes yeah boat shoes no boat shoes boat she's been in it like Abby just gets his shoes and she's like yeah Grant's like yeah fine probably Patrick tries to you know break the challenge by guessing he's actual backpack and he's allowed to do that I love this challenge like there you know it's a quick challenge that it really doesn't do much doesn't the mole doesn't seem to sabotage even though

50:27Grant like gives the narration but like well the mole could guess wrong or the mole could pack badly like yes those are the two options Grant well done congratulations for catching up but like there's so many like little funny moments in this that I think this is the highlight of the episode which is kind of where can certainly have big the other two challenges are it's a very personality challenge though that that's what sort of been forgotten over the years with this challenge is the fact that it is a very personality driven challenge it's a great one to to introduce people with because you get to know a lot about the people straight away with just what nonsense they pack yeah we've got six pairs of shoes on one end of the spectrum and then five kilograms of protein shakes on the other on the other end of the spectrum I'm sort of very interested to find out what someone needed a spatula for and why the carrier spatula are all the time there can't it's like kink there we go thank you soldiers I'm just trying to work which one of the five

51:32people at the hotel would have packed the spatula yeah Beverly who packed the spatula comas on this now Beverly was very packing right yeah like this is a way more interesting way of doing this sort of challenge than you get to by the time they're in you know season three or four and the whole setup for this challenge is putting the women in a room with you know a tamer feed and telling them and okay the women because their women have overpatched go and ring like redo their shit and just using that as a setup for a challenge and like I don't do that you sexes pigs but also you know I think this allows sort of a lot more opportunity to be silly with it and I think just like by complicate wins in this they ended up with basically the best possible combination of people in each group like I don't think if you had James or Alan at the hotel I don't think that would have been interesting I think Beverly is way more fun unpacking shit than I think she would have been guessing oh yeah she'll be packed Patrick he shouldn't pack him any

52:35shirts yeah and you know Linda and Joseph and he just gonna be amazing wherever they go like I think they end up with the best possible set of five people at the hotel the best possible set of five people repack it and it seems to be just like completely random chance that that happened I do think even if even ignoring the sexes pig angle of say season three I don't think with a level of genres that comes later that you would have people go in oh no I'm gonna pack protein shakes and a spatula and 70 pounds of shoes and yeah low to candy and loads of other irrelevant shit that they wouldn't normally pack now like you'd have people coming into it preparing for a tiny bag and not packing much at all yeah okay I think the worst you get in season three is a tickle me Elmo doll you know what's a catchy phrase that rolls off the tongue to say every 20 minutes in an episode golden lingerie dressing out private confession camera this show predates

53:41confessionals soldiers this show is so old I didn't even know what a diary room was yet private confession camera that just killed me every single time during the episode and that they had it they had the just the setup with it just being a camcorder on a tripod in an empty in a small empty room with a fireplace and a couple paintings behind them and that was that was the setup and somehow it was still three times the budget of the more New Zealand's private confession camera I think that's just like the actual hotel rooms so before going to bed they have to pick who should be woken up very early the next morning and at 307 AM grant wakes Patrick up what do you think about the twist that you're allowed to vote for yourself seems like a carpet yeah like I mean I get it but when you've got Patrick and Linda and Rocky and James doing it like I don't

54:41think that's the most interesting way on the other hand if you couldn't vote for yourself it probably would have been even more of a landslide for Patrick so so he is blindfolded and taken hostage and he's taken 45 minutes away from the hotel and in the morning he'll be given a phone and he's told to enter it when it rings at breakfast the rest of them get maps on the table annotated with their hotel grant meets them and tells them Patrick's been taken hostage and they need to divide into three trios each trio will receive a satellite phone and has two hours to find and rescue him one group goes back out one group by helicopter and one by speed bet I I love to sort of win grant bowl of sleep paralysis demons nicks into Patrick's experiment wakes him up for a challenge like Patrick's first concern is what's the weather like I'm like it's Tasmania and everyone is wearing winter clothes in the middle of an Australian summer you know what the weather is like and also thanks to Josephine he has one shirt anyway it's not like he has a choice here

55:41chose you how all this cast is because a lot of older people the first thing they do is turn is watch the weather network channel on TV that's like the most one of the most more stereotypical old people things you can do is just playing that Patrick's like oh I'd even had a chance to turn on the TV to see what the weather will be like today I also love to like when they get to when the big group gets to the levee in the morning to make grand grand standing there waving at them like he's an extra in the book of Mormon well would you like to change your legends grand bowl is truly the elder cutting over this show as long as he's not the Ellen coming of this show I don't know he could pull off some of Alan's fashion choices I think he could certainly pull off some of Alan's cheese so the helicopter team is Linda Jan and Alan the boat team is Bev Abby and Rocky and the Cal team is Ben Josephine and James and he could be anywhere within a 10,000 square kilometer radius as he was taking 60 kilometers away except for one very slight problem

56:50one of the groups is in a boat and Launceston if for anyone who doesn't know Tasmania is about an hour in land so basically you're trying to work out where along the river he is that's it my favorite thing of this entire challenge is is established to us that he was driven 45 minutes away and immediately as soon as he talks to anyone he's like oh yeah I was taking 90 minutes away and it's only two roundabouts at least I didn't do the classic count to an hour challenge that a lot of reality shows do so Patrick would have been awful at that production would have had an interview and say Patrick Patrick is the cell we're not going to weigh another two hours for you to ring the bell so if his phone rings and it's the helicopter team the boat team have problems with their phones and they have lost connection which I'm sure the sponsors Vodafone were delighted about this phone is so hard to use I can't figure it out

59:58gives them further information the envelope tells them that each vehicle has one key but only one key of the three will unlock it thanks to him spotting the two radio towers the helicopter team find him because again Tasmania only has two radio towers apparently um well Northern Tasmania and Abby was hiding the battery of the phone and that then makes the phone work they've been out of contact for over an hour and have 38 minutes to reach Patrick grant a love near any in that part you can only imagine the dial up message boards at the time going Abby's them all Abby's the most she hid the battery wait reconnect somebody we've somebody was using my phone while I was trying to upload my post onto the message board it cost them 10 cents of word to actually post on the message board there's something in here that would be it would have been like a really good sabotage because there's one point where James is struggling to hear what's being said on the phone

1:00:59but then you realize sort of right behind him Josephine's got the back window open all the way unlike the wind is going into his ears of course he can't hear anything when it comes up with the brilliant idea to get the speedboat team by the way yeah it's it's interesting because it worked the throwing the bottle out of the window but that could have wasted so much time yeah well the boat had to turn around and go back and get it well exactly yeah she perfectly timed her throw yeah if she was a shitter throw then that could have been a massive sabotage but I think that's always what let them win the challenge well what an quote to win at least win it on the surface so the helicopter team to robotl to the boat team to give them instructions and Ben driving the londover does not stop for a police patrol but the driver of the crew car does and he gets a ticket Rocky and Alan then find the respective correct keys just as the car turns up and they have all three cars and meet Grant at

1:02:02the front door of the property where Patrick's hiding and the boat keys releases the door and the group head in to rescue him and they succeed in time go team well everyone records their conversionals Ben has to go to the police station and face the music specifically the same officer who pulled over the crew car half an hour beforehand he gets a ticket and it's his first rack across the knuckles for a while and of course Grant has to be there to tell him that because he broke the law they are nulling and voiding the winnings for that challenge it's a bit of a lane decision in my opinion Logan how much money should they be allowed to make from a crime yeah quantify your crime proceeds Sanders I would say a fine or a deduction but not the whole price money for succeeding so dollar amount Logan let's see maybe you've lost the word challenge for a 10,000 maybe $5,000 fine I guess but you did your dollar who's where your mouth is

1:03:05but I thought it was a bit lame because it's I mean they did they did they did find them in time maybe it should be amazing race rules where they get penalized depending on the advantages that they got from bed herring down the motor yet twice the speed limit yeah and I think the funniest bit is it's not even the only time in the episode we see him break the law because like after the camera guy gets blocked immediately afterwards we see like the actual like team's car take off and Josephine's not wearing a seatbelt when it leaves like she's putting it on as the car drives away I'm like you wouldn't have lost for that as well and it is also worth saying as we were discussing on Facebook before we started to come in this episode the mole has summarized this exact challenge in other versions by making the team break the law it's not far fetched because well I presume off the back of this one the instructions are tightened up and they were specifically told that if you break the law you lose the challenge because I believe in the UK version of this Glenders specifically say don't break the law

1:04:08yeah so him breaking the law means I had nothing of $10,000 for the challenge and 15,000 of 25,000 for the episode and season it's so far and apparently everyone either suspects and or is annoyed by Beverly that's the biggest out of all the people who are controversial right now it's Beverly that's drawing everybody's attention so it's now time for the test 20 questions about the identity and that's as the mole who have no leads will go home of course via a tollship across Basteraite apart from the mole who can never go home and I also want to point out that this is the most early 2000s thing I have ever seen because the entire test settle is just spectacularly early windows 98 yep I like how blue everyone's faces look they have to open the the executable file containing the mole questions which is called the mole questions dot exe with a right click as well because they can't work I had to left clicks on a laptop yep grant has a CRT monitor plugged into

1:06:13is one of the other three people maybe it's a clue maybe this is a clue windows yeah you can rule them all out because they rule three people out at episode yeah we're we're not that far off you know season three three four whichever one it was basically just not putting the mold in the opening credits in the first episode so Grant says it's been a very successful first three days and we also see that everybody's crammed on the couches very very cramped we only see one shot of it but like there is no separate execution chairs for them it's get five of you on this three person couch because we're not gonna want anything else Alan and Joe speaking have their arms wrapped around each other and Abby and Linda have their arms wrapped around each other not because they were intended to do that but that's how squished they are and I don't want to say something has dated this episode even more than like the IBM think pads and the comics says of all that sort of stuff but Grant's outfit at this elimination he looks like a piece of Dutch pottery

1:07:16he he he he looks like he's just stepped off a cruise ship from New Caledonia yeah and accidentally landed in lawn system like I know this is an episode of like really ugly outfit choices for Grant because like he does that intro thing a poor Arthur dressed like he bought his stuff from the discount rack in a second install and then sort of at the like skydive landing site he's basically got a hat that says fishing trip with a jacket that says camping trip over a shirt that says have you filed your tax yet and like somehow this is the outfit that made me laugh the most out of all of that the Dutch pottery outfit well I think the best thing about it is you can't see the full horror of it until he stands up so like you just you just see he's wearing a white shirt with like a weirdly pattern collar and then when he stands up to say goodbye to James like you just see the full debacle that is the shirt did you notice Owlin's green shirt during this execution too no it was very I'm it really

1:08:21stands out if you if you really watch it he was wearing a shirt that was very retired cop going to live in the Caribbean I think it was for the skydive as well yeah he certainly was wearing one that was like that for day two but I think he was for day one as well if that screen is green they will stay and if it is red they will leave immediately with no time for goodbyes and spoilers James does get time for goodbyes Alan Rucky Josephine Patrick and Jan all get green screens for James's the first person sent packing with a tip of his fedora and Grant has a tough time finding things to talk about with James yeah I kind of love that like James brings up the sky and I think and Gras is like well done and then bundles him off into the loser movie will never to be seen again yeah he does not give a shit it's hilarious he hasn't learned how to personally relate to anyone in the TV show yeah yeah James look great yes two people enforced awkward conversation yeah I really enjoyed that

1:10:26James when Josephine and Linda are busy being absolute legends yeah so the good news for this season is that we do have suspicions from Logan Saunders because you didn't know to them at the time which then leads on to the next four questions who do you suspect who's going home next week who's the sneaky Tasmanian Saunders and who's the best selling author best selling author oh man there is both a sneaky Tasmanian and the best selling author in this cast and is it the winery manager or the school services officer oh man uh do the other things and then we'll go back to the best selling author because there's there's more to that story all right so my suspicions uh so first I have James uh so obviously that didn't work out yeah that's really really sucked why does this keep happening to me uh next is Ben and then just goes to the whole speed limit thing so that's I mean there was really nothing else to really go off in terms of sabotage then I have Abbey because

1:11:31of fumbling with the battery there uh Alan I think it's because of that green like green shirt like green shirt I think could be uh some sort of clue I don't really know uh then Beverly just because there is a lot of attention on her because you think you would want the mold to stand on some way in the first episode and she'd be cool as uh as a first mole for franchise then I have Patrick just because it seems like he's earned a trust of the group which would be a perfect cover for a mole potentially and the next few I don't really uh suspect as much so I really don't know what to make of them so then I have Rocky I mean are they really gonna pick a guy with all those protein shakes to be the mole then there's Josephine who just seems like your classic over the top character and then I have Linda and then I have Jan at the bottom for now and who's going to have next week uh who did he think he's going to have next week I think I think Linda I think
