Written by Horace Walpole, the book introduced many of the genre's defining elements, such as supernatural occurrences, medieval settings, and an atmosphere of suspense and terror. Walpole subtitled the novel "A Gothic Story," marking the first use of the term in a literary context and establishing a new genre that would influence countless works to come - including much of Edgar Allan Poe’s works.
