A Diamond is Forever: The Ostby Family
About this episode
Join me for a look at the life of Engelhart and Helen Ostby, father-and-daughter jewelers who boarded Titanic in First Class. Until recently, I had no idea that such a crucial figure in Edwardian fashion and design was a passenger or that he trained his daughter in the business by traversing Europe, a fairly modern and feminist concept. The Ostby story is one of immigration, one of innovation, and their rings remain part of our aesthetic today. This is random and beautiful Titanica at its finest!
