9AM: Green and Gold Game Preview - Packers vs Vikings

2:01And from his undisclosed location, he's the Packer's hall of fame. He's Mark Towsh. Towsh, good morning. How are you? I'm doing all right, man. I'll tell you, it's a reflective day. I know 25 years ago I was doing a radio show around this time because I think I think the second plane hit around 830, 835-ish on a Tuesday morning. And I don't know if it's because it's 25 years or if it's, obviously we've been talking a lot about the Pierce stair climb. I just dropped the kids off at school and I saw the fire department and the police and everybody would get together and it just made me very reflective. So I'm very reflective today. Would be all right. I'm glad you said that. I didn't talk to you before the show. I didn't know if you wanted to go there or not. Then I saw that you had your American flag hat on. The first plane hit the North Tower at 846 AM, Eastern Time, the second hit the South Tower

3:06at 903, 25 years ago today. But I was actually talking about this on WXRO with Wade Bates this morning. And I know we've told this story many times on September 11th shows, but obviously you were on the team in 2001. You were in your second season. And I don't know if people, I mean there are people that weren't born yet. So I know that there are not everyone knows this, the Green Bay aspect to this and a very small portion obviously of the story. But a couple of layers when it comes to your team and I was covering the team obviously at the time was that this happened on Tuesday, September 11th and you were scheduled to play in New York against the Giants that following Sunday. And for me as a reporter, I woke up to this news obviously and seeing the second plane

4:10hit. And at some point during the course of the day, the question did become not just this incredible national tragedy, but logistically, what does this mean? Like is the NFL going to postpone its games? It infamously did not postpone its games after the assassination of President Kennedy. And there were questions about whether they would play on and you were headed to New York for that game on Sunday. What they ultimately did was they did not play. They moved those games to the end of the season. So we were in New York in January. I know you went down with some of your teammates to ground zero and saw it. I certainly was down there and saw it as well. It's the most powerful thing I've ever seen during my lifetime. Seeing all the lost flyers that people, they were still hanging on those fences. I remember it like it was yesterday. But you guys were also part of the process of starting to come together as a country.

5:15And I'm just curious your recollections then from the following Monday night when Chris Gizzy runs out with the American flag and you're out there on the field for Packers Washington Redskins at the time before a national TV audience on Monday night football. Now I just don't know, I know everybody says never forgotten and obviously throughout the course of 25 years, I think there's ebbs and flows to how this goes. But I just remember having a ton of fear. As all this was unfolding, nobody knew anything of what was going on. And football was the last thing that we were thinking about. And you'd go, you try to figure out at that point I was living by myself. So you're just wondering and gasp, they start the gasp right? You just don't know what the heck was going. You didn't know if there were more attacks coming. And the fear of that, how that all played out throughout that time and the unknowns and

6:16what was happening. Football then we went in on that Wednesday and we had these meetings and nobody knew what was going on. We didn't have a clue if we were going to play. There was just so much unknown on every front and it's just crazy to me when you look back at it. That was such an impactful day. And 25 years later, obviously the importance of sports, a couple of things I learned throughout that process was obviously there's a lot going on. But how important sports was and that was one of the things Mike Sherman always, as we were kind of waiting for the NFL to make its decision about what was happening. And then we had to take a flight to New York. Everybody was wondering is that safe? Should we even do it? Airlines were shut down. I think it's easy to forget about all that. And obviously a day like today is a good day to remind us of what happened that 25 years

7:17ago and then how is a country? We were able to kind of come together and figure out ways to move forward. Was a powerful time. Are generations, this will be one of these days and one of those moments that defined an entire generation? I cannot recommend enough the documentary series that National Geographic Channel did. They actually did it for the 20th anniversary, five years ago. It's called One Day in America. I think it's six episodes, but it is remarkably done. Next year, one of the last people to be rescued from the rubble, a port authority police officer named Will Homeno, came to Packers practice. He was in town for an event that he was doing in Green Bay and he spoke to the team. I know our friend Chris Roth from WBAY did a sit down interview with him, but we saw him at practice and talked in there.

8:18The stories, I think it is important to your point, Tosh, that people that remember it, don't ever forget it, and then that people that maybe don't know enough about it understand it further. Jesse, I'm curious, you would have been in grade school, right? You would have been like fourth, fifth grade-ish? If I remember right, I was in third grade. Because I think there was one group that was older than me. What I remember about that, I don't, I remember third grade, you only know so much. Sure. I remember going to the bus stop in the morning and someone said that a plane flew into the Empire State Building. That was what I heard. I'm like, oh, that's like what a terrible accident. We went throughout the school day and you could tell there was a nervous energy around the school, but you couldn't really tell why they didn't put it on the TV's for us or anything. I heard later on one of the fourth grade classes during their gym class, they put it on the

9:23TV and let the fourth graders watch it. But the third graders and everyone younger did not see anything. We went, it was a normal school day. We got home and then when I got home, my parents were like, why don't just go in the basement and do some homework. I didn't really know why and then eventually I turned the TV on and mom came and explained like what happened to me or what happened. Then we watched it on TV and then I very quickly understood okay, that wasn't the Empire State Building. I never heard of the World Trade Centers until that day. Then you knew exactly what had happened. I think as kids, that's the one that I'm going to remember. My dad tells the story of when he was a kid and he remembers where he was when JFK was shot. And this is for me, I was a kid now when 9-11 happened 25 years ago in school and it does shape a generation and it's fortunate that we haven't seen another incident like this since.

10:24I think that's, there's a lot to be said about that but it was obviously a super tragic day and it resonated with people of all ages no matter how much you fully understood or not in the exact moment of when it happened. Now just so and obviously we've got you know modern day football that we discuss on this show but I'm glad you took us in this direction. So you've talked before and your insights are valuable of how you were feeling as a young NFL player and the uncertainty beyond the reality of what was happening to our country. But when you look back on that Monday night game, what was that like? Because was there the nervousness you still felt? Because I remember going into that stadium and there were blockades outside the bit like we didn't know if there was going to be some sort of attack because it was really the first high profile events where there were a lot of people gathering and so there were

11:27like military tanks and all kinds of things outside the stadium and we all remember what Chris Gizzy did with the flag running out the former Air Force Academy cadet and Air Force member and special teams linebacker. But like do you remember that night like what was it like before the game and what was it like in that moment and then did it get to be regular football or did it take a little while longer to get there that night? There is no doubt that it was a powerful, you know, one of those games that you don't forget because of how things kind of leading up to it and it was a big stage. It was a Monday night game and that photo is iconic. But yeah, once we got in and played it was the game went after the warmups and all the stuff. It was a normal game. I know we won, we played really well, but leading up into it, I think we just we looked at it as a big responsibility as an organization and as a team that this was something that

12:34needed to happen. I'm sure there were players that you know felt nervous. I'm sure Washington felt when they had to get on a plane. I know that was the big one for us was when we I think we had a road trip the next game and everybody, you know, just talking to the flight attendants and the pilots about how it's been and trying to get a grasp of what was all going on in their world was a part of it. But as far as the football goes, I really thought Mike Sherman did a great job of I guess keeping things in perspective. We're not firefighters, we're not police officers, but also understanding that this is a big part of healing is getting back to some sense of normalcy and giving people the entertainment and that distraction away from everything else that was going on and we took that very seriously. Just to touch on that with him, like, you know, I feel like his time sometimes gets a little bit lost to history, right? Because you guys didn't win a Super Bowl on his watch, you had some painful losses.

13:38But like, I feel like if there was a coach who was going to be able to meet that moment because he had, you know, the dad quality, the stern coach quality, like when you think back to playing for him, was that kind of the kind of moment that you expected him to deliver upon because of the way he, you know, went about his business and the way he connected with you guys? Mike Sherman is just a really good human being. So none of that would have surprised me at all. You know, you could say what you want about him from a coaching standpoint, but as far as being a great family man and a leader and someone that rose up to that occasion, Mike Sherman did all of that in droves. He was not as definitive about his beliefs about playing as Zach Buckle Bewele was.

16:49Now we will await the NFL's portion of this process. Towshtale has been asked a lot about this. I will be surprised if he's not suspended six games. No contest please. Not the same as guilty plea. I understand that. But they move this up clearly with the intent. Why is the no contest plea not the same as a guilty plea? Is that guilty? No it's no contest. What does that mean? If you're not seating, it means you do not admit or deny the criminal charges. You're just accepting the punishment as if you are guilty. So you're guilty. Right? If you say no, I'll just answer. In the eyes of the law, I want to understand. If he's not. If he's not. You are treated as such.

17:51Yes. I want to make sure that you understand. OK. You are treated as if you are guilty. You are not admitting guilt. So what are you admitting? Think of it this way. I just want to understand. I don't understand. I don't understand. You already voted for you. I'm kind of throwing away. There's has to be other instances of this. I'm so sorry. I just assumed if you pleaded no contest, you're saying you got me. No contest, babe. I'm out. That's what I just assumed. When you said you're not pleading guilty, I'm kind of like that is kind of pleading guilty though. I don't understand. I don't know. I'll be understand. In the Brewer's game the other night, there was a close play at second base. I don't remember who it was. Let's just say it's Bryce Tarrang. Bryce Tarrang slides into second base. They call him out rather than choosing. He says no contest. But he's not saying he's safe for a. Rather than choosing to review and go to court and be guilty or innocent in being confirmed

18:52out or reversed safe, the Brewer's pleaded no contest. We're not going to challenge it. We just accept that he's out. How about that? I think that's a terrible one, but maybe it's genius. I actually, I got to give you credit, Jesse. That's actually not bad. That's pretty good. That's what I can do. From greenbaywi.gov, understanding your plea. If you plead guilty, you are admitting that you committed the offense. You will be found guilty and a fine will be imposed. You will be given an opportunity to explain your side of the story to the judge who will consider the facts when imposing the fine. This is apparently just for municipal court things that you've done, that criminal court stuff. If you plead no contest, you are not admitting or denying your guilt. However, you will not contest the facts behind the charge.

19:56No contest, please, cannot be used against you in another court. For example, if you were cited for a violation that occurred due to an accident, you may be sued in a civil action due to the fact that you plead no contest in this court, it may not be used against you in any court of law. However, in this court, you will be found guilty. Okay. Does that help? No. And then obviously if you plead not guilty, you are denying committing the offense altogether. None of this helps. You're not going to be able to convince me in this. I'm not going to convince you. I'm just trying to give you the definition. No, I know. I just, I guess I just did never. I thought no contest was like, I'm not going to contest. Yes, we'll move on. That's what I thought. And that seems as if that's not really what, no, you're not guilty. But you're not innocent. You're not admitting that you're guilty. Yes. No, I come against the suspended important defense antagonist. In my opinion, we're going to lose things.

20:58Okay. Because you were Dryer. But Gray is the잖아 Center District. I really got Song some money for the ran frigging me Basically, I'll take a closer look at it. I just could not Hussey and Walter突h. The cops have gone business today. I just, I see Taylor and Salvador but, Ellen Yang they cannot think of it. Can you tell why we're not guilty about that? Or that's not what you thought could be good. It's쳤 the point? out no he's not saying you're right i was out your say he's saying i'm not going to use our challenge to try and prove that i was not out we're just gonna accept the result and keep this thing moving along so that we all can get on with our lives as opposed to going to the replay monitor and reviewing everything isn't more like the packers didn't pick up a first down but will a florid thinks they did but he doesn't want to use a challenge in the first quarter is that a no contest because he maybe thinks he is but he doesn't want to use it so he's not going to contest even though he thinks it's right or is it

22:00i'm not sure i need to do this so i can be like i guess i guess i just so weird i guess in any sports metaphor it's the equivalent of a close play that you choose not to challenge you just accept the result and move on because you don't want to go through the entire process and risk being double confirmed extra out losing a challenge okay i yeah i just don't get it i'm not gonna get it and i maybe i'm just being a stone head here and that's fine i just don't get it uh... i feel like tom hanks in that movie toy where he just i don't get it i don't get it uh i'm sorry that movie is called big big when he was at the toy store he worked at the toy store and kept saying i don't get it now want you to explain it i want to understand but you guys aren't helping me understand so i think it's probably best we just move it along on the dot jacobst is not innocent he's not guilty but he's going to be punished he's being called

23:01the gist of what's that he's been called out without losing a challenge as opposed to being called out and losing a challenge but he is out he's not playing he is out yes he's he is out and he's fine and he's but he's could lead it but it could be worse if he goes through the legal process and they find extra things that say oh you're really guilty but if he went to court and was guilty would it be the same result as what this is no i know he would most likely face even stiffer punishment i.e. losing a challenge from who you replay the play from the courts but from the court not what what could the court do what could the court do if they found him guilty that they didn't do when they gave the help maybe this video it comes to light and then he gets extra like he's found extra guilty as opposed to being able to found extra guilty as it now there you go that now that's helping me he could be extra guilty okay i strideous legit right now he like there's going to be deals that are

24:05done and whatever else like i get plea deals yeah but i thought when you when you're pointed you were saying i was wrong as there some stuff happened i don't want to be punished severely but you're still guilty that is basically what that is basically what's happening they're not no he said he's not guilty they're not saying nothing happened i wasn't there they're saying something happened five dollars that you made me say that there's i'm not gonna make you say there's he's not saying nothing what am i a puppeteer i can't puppeteer you i don't get it man i guess the extra guilty is where i guess i'm gonna that's where i'm gonna land it's either you know i understand why he did it by the way i mean i get that part of it but when you said he did not plead there's no guilt associated that's i'm just having a hard time getting my head wrapped around that on the mount rush more of tomhanks greatest movies forest gump philadelphia i saw hatch right now i'm not happy with hatch right now either

25:09and since he got that started yeah i'm not happy with hatch he's not been contributing to the splash where he needs to uh to he was in toy story too so that's why there could be some confusion and toy story three and three and four and apparently five uh big is a great movie by the way uh hatch we need you come on back this has been a discussion of josh jay comes in the packers running back situation and ed helms sucks um touche he could get fewer the sick jessie if i ask jason a question he doesn't want to answer he could just say no contest and then he's not saying he's not answering and he is answering yeah what one could say in the realm of this show jason pleads no contest to a lot of the questions that you ask him yeah that does happen quite frequently he neither answers nor can we're clearly muttling the water share i'm just trying to get our guy to understand what happened yesterday i you're not gonna help me the uh you're not gonna help me i'm gonna have a hard time getting

26:13so and that's okay um that is okay so i think if if let's move on uh all right the court portion however he chose to plead is now done so he is uh faced with a thousand dollar fine he has to go through counseling uh he has a he's entered a program that if he meets all the conditions uh he at the end of the year the the charge will be expunged um that's a fun word that is fun word right i'm not sure he's not gonna be expunging things off your record jason what are the chances and viny vitrano and his boldathon march on Lloyd goes off this year has it what are the chances he gets this six games suspension okay uh jackson comes does march on Lloyd balls out and uh oh boy from Iowa is showing up that he can play hmm what are the chances after all this he gets his six game

27:16suspended i didn't get fine he gets fine he loses his he loses six six games worth of contract one of the chances the package is say nah we're good um so let me back up for a second just to be clear so the reason why they moved up this court date from november 17th to yesterday was to expedite this process and so now the legal part of it has been resolved through the no contest plea that we've just uh discussed at length and now it is in the hands of the NFL which is going to hand down its punishment in terms of how many games he'll be suspended could be three could be four could be six i don't think it'll rise to the level of the eight games that james pierce Scott he was facing at least one felony charge in his domestic violence case but and this is not apples to apples

28:19because this guy didn't do anything illegal all he did was suffer a catastrophic knee injury but the comparison that i have used is your final season in green bay of 2010 alharist shreds his knee in a game in 2009 at lambo field he goes through an arduous recovery process he is one of the best corners in football just like josh Jacobs was one of the best running backs in football in 2024 and was a pro-bola he goes through the arduous comeback starts the season on the pu p list they reach the point where they open the practice window for al he practices for three weeks at the end of that window you have to decide whether you are going to put him on ir for the rest of the season activate him to the 53 man roster or release him al harris is a packers hall of favor he's in the hall with you he's got the football and everything and what are the packers do a team that

29:23was contending for a super bowl championship as it turned out they released him now again i i want to be very clear it was not criminal it was injury related but in the interim when he was not available truman Williams had become one of the best corners in football like he had been opposite Charles woodson and they really like this young rookie former wide receiver from my amy sam shields as their nickel guy and so they released out and like he caught on with the st. Louis rams i think or the my amy dolphins briefly played for both of them after green bay but basically they said yeah we're glad you're healthy but we don't need you anymore and the packers theoretically could say to josh Jacobs well we're glad your suspensions over but we don't need you anymore and so we're going to move on from you now that your suspension is up and we thank you for your

30:25contributions and we wish you well i don't think that's off the table do i think it's likely no because i'd energize it 30% or less than that i would say it's less i would say that it's less than 30% that they would release them but that's just an educated guess and it's based on two things one they have been pretty vocal especially goody about supporting him in terms of wanting him to still be on the team they have certainly hedged there's no doubt about that yes but then two and and i again i want to reiterate that someone that i spoke to who had not seen the video themselves but new people who had had said this is this video from his garage is not to the degree of the ray rice video now again ray rice is knocking out his girlfriend with a punch to the face in a hotel elevator so if it was the ray rice video and the packers so he'd be going again i think

31:31you guys asked he he gone right so but if if there was some concern that that could become public and they would be concerned about the optics of that they could also that could be the other reason why they just flat out release him or if it came out while he was suspended for however many games or whatever it might be so i don't i don't think that's the my question yeah my question to you is i know he got to get to break was if marcia on Lloyd is a baller does that change the math as far as what the packers do with Josh Jacobs yes i'm sure it does i mean okay again is marcia on Lloyd like let's say he gets suspended four games and marcia on Lloyd plays really well okay do you still trust the fact that marcia on Lloyd's going to stay healthy enough or do you want the i mean or do you want the safety blanket of still having Josh Jacobs on your team i would i think they still want Josh Jacobs on the team i really do okay but we'll have to wait

32:34and see um packer dog in the espn Madison i did not see this i read a lot of my colleague stories i did not see this uh he said it's been reported that the judge sealed the video as evidence as part of the plea deal reached so that means that at least theoretically uh that video will not be seen and that i wonder if that was part of the reasoning behind the no contest plea frankly i would think so they're texting and saying my Bryce Tarrang safe at second analogy was brilliant multiple brilliance so just to be clear you decided that it was brilliance with that it was it was so important to interrupt our conversation to let everyone know that people think you're brilliant yes okay doesn't happen very often so uh you know who's brilliant the people at Jones dairy farm yes indeed they are and that's how you last seven generations and on going and that's what Jones dairy farm is done down in Fort Atkinson all the way back to 1889 and everybody wants to eat clean

35:45celebration was pulling into the driveway and seeing everyone on our team wearing take care shirts that had the Groober Loves as logo on the back and that so thank you David and to all of our teammates for making that possible that was that was one time I got a little emotional I'll admit time now I'm not gonna get emotional about this for the green and gold game preview let's take a closer look at this week's matchup this is the green and gold game preview for the third time in eight seasons the green bay packers and the Minnesota Vikings opening the season at us bank stadium in Minneapolis with Jason will the in attendance gonna be a fun one what is the biggest storyline of all the different storylines they are going into this game Towsh I think the biggest storyline on my end is are we going to be able to protect Jordan love

36:48I don't have any questions that Jordan love along with his now streamlined three wide Tucker craft I think we all feel good really good about that group but I don't feel good about the guys up front right now I don't feel good about even who's going to be out there and Minnesota's defense and Flores Flores is aggressive defense against this group and how Matt LaFlaura is going to adjust and handle that that to be is going to be the biggest storyline and if the packers can win he'll have solved that riddle if he doesn't have the answers they're not going to win up there for me it's what are they going to do against Kyler Murray how effectively are they going to rush and contain him are they going to prevent him from getting the ball to Justin Jefferson Jordan Addison and Joanne Jennings which is a pretty impressive trio at wide receiver is Jonathan Ganon

37:48and his knowledge having coached Kyler Murray going to be able to conjure up things that will flumics him and will the packers be able to defend effectively enough that if Brian Flores gets the better of the packers offensive line and of Jordan love and of their Josh Jacobs list running game that they can still win a sludge match as Towsha would call it and they win a game 16 13 or something like that on Sunday next next up in our green and gold game preview besides Jordan love which player is most important to the packers having success on Sunday Towsha besides Jordan love I think it's going to be someone on that back end and I think it's going to be our guy our new newly found teammate for the year in Evan Williams I think our safety play needs to be dominant and whether it's I don't know what old Ganon's got cooked up but when you have

38:55and we saw this Sunday at Lambo Notre Dame just basically put a safety out and said we are going to not let their quarterback run Tyler Murray for you can say what you want about him as far as preparation and everything else goes great athlete limiting what he can do in the run game reading his eyes in the past game that safety position is the key to that and when you can shut down running quarterbacks and shut down and offense that is going to rely on all of that safety play needs to be at the top of that list and Evan Williams is going to be one of those guys I'm going to put him on the on the hot seat as far as the player that needs to have a good game the Steineoffel's hot seat I am eager to see what Brandon Cise does he has been everything that they were hoping he would be and now I don't think they're going to obviously he's not going to travel I don't think that's
