A 72-year-old accountant from Middlebury just got hit with a federal sentence for tax evasion. Edward Sattlowski, who ran his own CPA firm in Nagatuck, was ordered to serve three months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release, plus a $50,000 fine. This all went down in New Haven Federal Court earlier this week, over seven years, from 2016 to 2022, Sattlowski cashed more than 2,000 client checks to dodge reporting his firm's income. He funneled that cash through 15 different bank accounts, business, personal, even nominee ones to keep it off the books. As a self-employed CPA, he handled tax returns for himself, his spouse, and their partnership called FinGLTD. But he hid a ton of EJS CPA receipts, skipping out on legit taxes while prepping returns for others. In total, he failed to report $1,379,694 in income dodging $400, $22,720 in taxes.
He's paid back to principal, but still owes big on interest and penalties. Sattlowski pleaded guilty back in November, and is out on $50,000 bond for now. He'll report to prison on May 27, a reminder that the IRS nets even the pros who know the game inside out. Far from news today, powered by AI bringing you what matters.
