7 Good Minutes: Extra - The 10 Seconds That Turn Comparison Into Something Useful

7 Good Minutes

About this episode

7 Good Minutes is made possible by:

The next time you feel that familiar drop — the flash of "I'm behind" after seeing someone else's highlight — there's a specific, short practice that changes what happens next.

This episode walks through it step by step: catching the physical signature of the feeling before you scroll further, naming the mismatch out loud in your head, and asking one honest question — is there something real here that you actually want, with a reachable next step? If the answer is yes, you name one small move, not the whole goal. If the answer is no, you name one true, specific good thing about your actual day, and let the moment close.

None of this makes the highlight reels disappear. You'll still see them. What changes is what you're carrying in the ten seconds after — either a real step taken on purpose, or a true fact that brings you back to a day that was already going fine.

Clyde Lee Dennis here with today's episode of Seven Good Minutes. Extra. Today's idea in one sentence, that flash of feeling behind when you see someone else's life isn't proof of anything. It's a mismatch and an unanswered question, and you can catch both in the moment. Here's a simple way to do that. I call it real versus real. First, notice the spike. It usually has a physical signature, a small drop in your stomach, a flash of, I'm behind,

a tightening in your chest, right after you see the photo or the post. That feeling is your cue. Second, name the mismatch in your head or out loud. That's a highlight. This is my whole day. You're not saying the other person is faking anything, you're just noticing that one curated moment and your entire ordinary day were never a fair comparison to begin with. Third, ask one question. Is this something I actually want with a real reachable next step toward it? Answer honestly. No guilt, just information. If yes, name one small specific next step. Not the whole goal, just the next move. Let the feeling turn into fuel instead of judgment. If no, it isn't really something you want or there's no real path to it from here. Name one true specific good thing about your day so far. Not a forced positive spin. Just something accurate. The kids had a good breakfast. The report got done early.

Then let the moment close and move on. You'll probably still notice the highlight reels. That's fine. What changes is the next 10 seconds. A real step forward or a true fact that brings you back to your own day. Until next time, I'm Clyde Lee Dennis and this has been 7 Good Minutes Extra.
