50 Baby Remains Found in Trinidad Cemetery

0:00On April 19, police and Trinidad in Tobago uncovered a grim scene at Camuto Cemetery about 25 miles from Port of Spain. They found remains of at least 50 babies and six adults dumped their last Saturday. Four of the adults were men, two women, and most had identification tags. Two bodies showed clear signs of autopsies, raising questions about how they ended up abandoned like this. Officers are probing if it's unlawful dumping of unclaimed corpses with forensics digging deeper into origins and any legal violations. This hits hard in a country battling sky-high violence, ranked sixth most dangerous worldwide by the U.S. State Department, with a murder rate of 37 per 100,000 in 2023. Already 623 murders this year alone. Just last month, Prime Minister Kamla Prasad, the Cessar, called a national state of emergency over the crime surge, including gang troubles that have, gripped the islands. Police Commissioner Alistair Guevaro called it deeply troubling, bowing urgency and sensitivity in the probe.
