With the NFL today, March 19th, the San Francisco 49ers are already making big changes early in the off season. Linebacker D Winters, who started all 17 regular season gains last year, has lost his weak side spot to veteran Dre Greenlaw, if Greenlaw. Stays healthy this time. That's a tough break for Winters after a full year as a starter. Meanwhile, left guard Connor Colby sits atop the depth chart, now that Spencer Berford signed with the Raiders. Colby struggled last season with a low pass block in grade, even playing through a growing injury as a seventh round rookie. Experts think a new draft pick could push him aside soon. Fans and analysts see this as part of a bigger shake-up for the 49ers' defense in line. At free safety, G.I.R. Brown has bounced in and out of the starting role due to speed and tackling issues. The team might use a high draft pick there for the first time in over a decade. Over at cornerback, Renardo Green fits man coverage well, but struggles in zone schemes the team prefers.
He had a heated sideline spat with Coach Kyle Shanahan during the playoffs, and the new defensive coordinator could target a replacement, or even a, trade. With the off season just getting started, more veterans might lose spots to Ricky's next year. The 49ers are clearly prioritizing health, scheme fits, and fresh talent to build a stronger lineup.
