In this episode, Patrick talks with Ruth, a rising voice on TikTok known as @here_4_now, about her journey toward the Catholic Church as a candidate in the OCIA program at her local Arizona parish. Ruth comes from an Ethiopian heritage and is currently training as a therapist while—very publicly through her thoughtful TikTok updates and witty commentary—exploring the Catholic Faith. She opens up about her deeply personal story, from growing up in a strong evangelical tradition, including a stint as a Mennonite, to wrestling with the historical claims of Rome. Her questions and doubts are expressed with refreshing directness and she isn't interested in glib answers. Patrick and Ruth get into a wide array of topics about authority and Scripture, trauma recovery strategies, the interplay of therapy and the healing grace of God, and the lived experience of growing up outside the Catholic Faith while slowly but surely peering in with increasing amounts of interest and—what's the best word?—longing.
