4. Social fear conditioning and the COVID response

Fear is an emotion induced by a perceived danger or threat. It has been used throughout history as a tool in psychological warfare, as a mechanism in films for entertainment and as a motivator to train harder in athletics. How one responds to fear encompasses a wide spectrum.

Mid-March 2020 is the moment the global pandemic became real in the United States. Rising COVID cases in many states led to astronomical projections and images of overwhelmed hospitals. In the face of uncertainty, tactics such as curfews, stay-at-home orders and mask mandates were pursued to slow the spread. On today's episode, Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss the consequences of those actions and how fear influences our behavior.
