John Michael Van Hohenstein, better known as Johnny The Ripper, is a professional longboard surfer born in the Philipines, but raised in Hawaiʻi. After picking up a surfboard at an early age he quickly honed his skills and is becoming one of the best longboarders in the world with his timeless style, nimble cross stepping his toes to the nose, riding backwards, and all while having the time of his life. This Waikiki grom has accumulated many sponsors already such as Moku Surf Shop, Banán, Paia Fish Market, and F-45 Kahala. Heʻs won multiple longboard competitions at such a young age and is only getting started. With over 45,000 followers on Instagram, insane photos and videos, he's definitely a profile you should follow. In this episode we talk about moving to O'ahu with his dad and brother and growing up homeless in Waikiki, how he got into surfing, having respect for the locals as an outsider, some tips for surfing, and some much more.
