于是他和奖助委员会周旋，官僚体系战斗，孤苦伶仃来到西非原始部落，经历车祸、疟疾、肝炎、 失去门牙，遭受指责、嘲笑，不被理解。每天和狗、蝙蝠、白蚁睡在一起，用遍布吸血虫的水洗澡，九死一生翻山越岭去做研究，研究笔记却被山羊吃了一半……谢天谢地，他终于回到了英国的现代生活……
但六个月后，他再次出发去田野了！
