3:14In and out of this is from the days world's day. Friday, September 11th, date 12th of the 2026 US Open officially in the books. Our women singles final now set for just the 14th top in WTA Tour history. The current world number one will face next week's world number one. There will be a new player at the top of the WTA rankings thrown by Virtue of reaching the semi-finals in New York. A plant in Arena, as the world number one will guess what. Tennis Gods worked on this storyline quite yet. They served up a battle of number one first number two. I'm going to have a link up to the second time this season. These two will match up in a major final. Could you ask for anything else to wrap up our grand slam play here in 2026. I think not. And of course on today's podcast not only do I want to offer my first thoughts on Saturday's women singles final. I want to break down how we got there in breaking down each of Thursday's two women singles semi-final battles.

4:18I also want to break down Fridays. Men singles semi-finals, the all-American battle, Tiafo, Shelton. What does a winning scenario look like for each of these guys? It's fair I've hatched off battle of course similar question as well. Yes, less tennis to discuss as there always is in the business end of any major. But still got plenty we want to get through as of course want to make sure all of you tennis fans feel best prepared for the final championship weekend at a major of this 2026 season. Arena sabilega first female or male player in the open era to reach eight consecutive finals at the majors on hard courts eight in a row graph hingus joke of it they all had accumulated seven in a row she's made eight slam finals in a row on hard courts. look like someone who belonged in that stratosphere of the conversation as you look again throughout the course of her 7562 victory with the most notable fact she faced one break point and went unbroken in what was a straight set victory over the player who has been pretty clearly the third best player in the world on hard courts this season and it was the way she did it I mean pick your poison right you can have the dominance out of the way she did it I mean pick your poison right you can have the dominance out of the way she did it.

6:56Serve you know get throughout the course of the match it just felt like plus one winner after plus one winner every forehand every backhand her feet were set there was just nothing Jessica Pagola could do again 29 winners off the rakan of sabilega 12 for Jessica Pagola to Pagola's credit. Saba-lenka plus one for plus one strike for strike Through the first 40 minutes of this match as we got to five all and even again within that five all game like a little Five all service game for Saba-lenka a little doubt injected by Pugula, but a couple of big serves a couple of Monumental forehands just like I can't remember the last time a Saba-lenka hit the forehand as well I saw her play it last night where it was just when she connected with it cleanly There was nothing that could Pugula could do and ultimately again in that final service came of the set five six Saba-lenka came across three returns The last one the inside out where it's just like what can you do?

7:58What can you do in the face of that sort of firepower? There are no options like sure you can try and hit a first serve 120 to the perfect spot Anything short of that when Saba-lenka striking the ball that confidently that fluidly that consistently It's the sort of pace that allows her to overwhelm everyone. It's the gear she can hit with a degree of consistency That I'll do respect to Rebecca who was awesome today. I still don't think even a robot can I can match and? It was relentless even to the point where again four two fifteen all second set You thought okay this does feel like just Pugula's chance like a little bit of momentum play a really good point Strikes a forehand cross get Saba-lenka on the full stretch chooses to go behind her with that forehand approach and Saba-lenka on like anticipates right hits a forehand short angle dip at the feet of Pugula and nothing Pugula could do with that Volley she was handcuffed every return it felt like peppered at her feet as well again Pugula played so well on serving the first set

9:02First strikes at the feet of Saba-lenka Constantly gave Saba-lenka no time to work with just could not keep up that pace the way that arena Saba-lenka could Saw her second serve feasted upon throughout the course of this match and that just spoke to again Saba-lenka's on top of the baseline giving no space giving no time and striking the ball perfectly This is why I've said it before and look I'm prone to hyperbole I think anyone with a microphone in front of their face has to to try and emphasize a point But arena Saba-lenka's best tennis is the closest I've ever seen to peak Serena And that's not to say there aren't other extraordinary players on on the tier or above Saba-lenka by their level by their resume and accomplishments But in terms of just sheer Overwhelming you with tennis that you are just not physically capable of matching That's what Serena did at the peaks of her powers. There was just a gear she could hit that no one else can match and Saba-lenka has that same gear to her and

10:04Again, she lost 17 points 17 points on serve in nine service games faced one break point 29 winners against 12 unforced errors Like made 64% of her first serves One 14 of her 19 points on the second serve really only needed one break per set Because that's how well she was serving today It's just ridiculous and again for Saba-lenka I mentioned the eight straight finals for her At the majors on hard courts you look for her now. She's 33 and three on hard courts this season 33 and three losses to Rebecca on the at the Australian open and then obviously the Canada Cincinnati losses to Alexandra of a Baylick respectively during that stretch She's 12 and two on hard courts against top 20 opponents seven and one against the top 10 Finals or titles Miami indeed wells finals Australian open in US open

11:05You know again she wins the final she's number one in the points race and I think more than anything It's a reassertion of yeah I struggled through the summer but when arena Saba-lenka wants to turn it on as she wanted to turn it on after losing to her back And I during the sunshine swing to just remind everyone no no World still runs through me even if she lost the world number one ranking. It's like how David Robinson one or not David Robinson. What's it David Robinson? Maybe someone won the MVP and Hakeem destroyed them. I think it was David Robinson It also happened of course on Carl Mellon won the MVP and Michael Jordan destroyed them in the finals like That's what I could see happening for me to Saba-lenka. It's like oh, yeah, that's cute You're gonna be the world number one, but I'm the best and again since the 2022 US open 88 and 11 in the 16 majors that she's played she's made the finals in nine of those 16 majors quarter finals in 15 of 16 semi-finals in 13 of 16 Finals in nine of the 16 and again has now made the most consecutive hard court slam finals of any player

12:11Mail or female in history It's one of them runs or what it was in the new phrases one of them ones like it's one of them runs That we will always be talking about certainly in my lifetime when someone goes on a run of slam success It'll be like yeah, but was it 15 out of 16 slam quarter finals was it nine major finals and 16 events and again The fact that this would only be a fifth major title for her that feels light given the success 16 majors by the way 2022 US open was four years ago four years and by the way during that stretch She's went over 80% of her matches more broadly across levels She's during that stretch in time 14 total titles by the way, but 229 to 53 she's won 81% of her matches for four years Consequently during those 40 years she's 80 and 31 72% victory percentage against the top 20 44 and 23 20 2 thirds of her matches against the top 10 and double digit top 10 victories per season

13:12Obviously a chance to finish the year as world number one very much in play for a third consecutive year You you do that again. You're just on a short list The level I saw from part today and Pagula said as much in the post-match press conference Which reassured reasserted what I saw where she's just like yeah There was nothing she could do today because that's just the gear Saba-Lankin can hit like again Pagula didn't serve badly Pagula in this match overall made 68% of her first serves on 78% of her first serve points Could she have played bigger on the second serve maybe but you inject more risk certainly when you do that And just Pagula such a high percentage high efficiency player Saba-Lankin just never slowed down and it was just a reminder of how good she can be at her best again now overall on this 20 26 season 46 and 8 Second in the points race knocking on the door of what would be again? She should win a slam title this year she should every year of her prime And again the fact that she's at foreign it feels like speaks to just how good she's been now for nearly half a decade

14:15Consequently, of course we get the battle that was staring us in on the face like to have predicted anything other than Saba-Lankin Rebachina when they showed a level This season like it wasn't like we were playing on past performance. Yeah, it wasn't a great summer But we're back and I literally made the finals in Canada and Right you made the finals before losing to Saba- uh excuse me before losing to Shiontech and of course Saba-Lankin is just freaking Saba-Lankin like We should have seen it coming anyways. Rebachina another Three set victory over a golf much as she didn't came it up 366464 she manages to knock off golf Another one of those matches where outside of you know again one loose service game Really in the opening said Rebachina was pretty untouchable on serve throughout the course of the match again was broken I guess once per set But the first serve percentage it felt like Certainly picked up for her as the match continued to progress. She was dominant behind her first serve with her first strike

15:18But Coco go fucking fights you man and Coco go again I thought served really well in the opening said even if the percentage wasn't there how aggressive she was with her first serve How adamant she was in playing aggressive with her first strike into a corner just to get Rebachina on the move now Rebachina was you know made over the course of the match Rebachina 39 unforced errors 18 of them almost half all in the first set and It felt that way it felt like the rhythm wasn't there Golf was really good about moving her corner to corner Rebachina wasn't picking on the forehand probably as much as she should have foregoth And golf was serving well like and again golf. There's an inherent ability to absorb whatever you throw at her and take that first thing away Where if you're not at your best as Rebachina wasn't two three shots deep in every rally in that opening said Golf's gonna make you work for it But it's a credit to Elena Rebachina who did slow things down who felt like where did I just start putting far more returns in place Our stop giving away so many three points early in rallies and forced Coco gop to come up with something special

16:24To hit her off the court and that's not to say Coco gop still didn't find approach out still didn't find ways forward Still in force errors with attacking tennis next two cents were four and four But much like Jessica Pagula gop could not do that at the level to match Elena Rebachina over the course of the two hour Nine's minutes of this match versus Rebachina when she wanted to step in and if she connected with the ball freely It's the sort of pace that hits everyone off the court I mean she was hitting her spots so well on serve It felt like by the end of this one only five aces But I'd love to know how many she went 32 of 42 points on the first serve 76 percent How many of her serves went unreturned in this match? I wish I had that statistic available to me I apologize. I do not Look at me again Elena Rebachina this season now 48 and 13 overall she's 35 and seven on the season on hard courts And four of those losses are to either Shviantec or Saba Lanka You know again, well, I guess that Shviantec was the retirement, but it still counts

17:29Against top 10 20 opponent. She's 11 and six against the top 10. She's eight and four like Her best is the best on this surface. She has a degree of firepower look like again Coco really struggles. She was rolling in too many serves It felt like again the forehand She just wasn't hitting it Confidently cross court the way she needed to open up space for herself against Rebachina The Rebachina played a lot through her backhand and played through wherever the open space was available to and Coco Golf had answers for her man. Coco goff always gonna have answers for whatever you throw at her But you know again, Elena Rebachina two sound two solid. She is through to another major final You look for Rebachina. It was her second career come back victory at a major against the top 10 opponent The other time she did it own shabber at Wimbledon eighth win of the career of Rebachina and third at the open Where she beat a former slam champion. She's one of only two active players to defeat former slam champions at all four grand slam events

18:30Along with Serena Look at me again like Was just catching the ball early. She's moving better than I've expected There's a lot of longer absorbed her allies. I actually thought we were playing at goffs pace through the first set and a half But set number three was all about the plus one and it's a credit to Coco goff that she was able to go plus one for plus one with Rebachina As long as she was and you know again, find ways to dip the ball at the feet of Rebachina Find ways to get her stretch and force the sprayed error But there's just too much firepower off the rack of the racket of a liner Rebachina Now you look for Rebachina by the way since she won her 2022 Wimbledon title Rebachina now during this stretch overall 217 and 69 so when 76% of her matches again over a four-year stretch 58 and 13 at the majors. That's an 82% win percentage again. She's played 18 of them She's made seven different quarters that during that stretch into her fourth final during that stretch

19:32Obviously looking for her third title as well She will have ascended to world number one like she's two-time major champion in a world number one Elena Rebachina is a first ballot hall of favor um Is in a spagant has one of the premier properties in Serena Williams power tennis country club because she can gear it up Like the best of the best and I just think Sabelanka on the return of serve hits a gear that Rebachina can't match to where when Sabelanka is hitting the return confidently Comfortably with her feet set underneath her You're just not getting the ball back like ask Jess Kupagula who still put on a great who played a great match on serve And it still wasn't enough um I don't know if Rebachina ever has that sort of a gear in her as a return And I should get hot on the return of serve and certainly strike three winners within the course of one return game to earn herself a break of serve um I guess with that let's get into it again our women's final now set by the way you look since the australian open switch to hard courts in

20:341988 only twice has the met the australian open in us open women singles finals been identical 1994 stefig graphers or oxasenches vicario and now of course arena sabelanka taking on Elena Rebachina again just the 14th time one weeks number one gets to face the next weeks number one the week of Or before that transition occurs The 17th matchup excuse me 18th matchup in the career head to head between Rebachina and sabelanka There fourth of course of this season sabelanka two and one in the head to head since your loss to her three sets in the australia final Of course seven six and the third at indeed wells four and three she knocks her off in Miami semi finals You know again, they've played 17 matches 10 of those 17 have gone to a deciding set you'll get the splits between them on hard courts Seven and seven overall the splits between the last two and they've split the last four matches between them

21:36I mean again you want to go for them matches at the majors over the course of their career sabelanka the two one lead They've played two australian open finals, which of course they split each in three sets sabelanka also three set went at the 2021 winbled in all three of their matchups at the majors have gone to a third said It's elite power tennis at its finest and the the physicality of andreeva and goff this match will lack I do not anticipate we will have more than 15 shots go over 10 15 rallies go over 10 shots total It's a match of execution I know that sounds very boring to say, but genuinely you look right now again at the hold percentages on the season sabelanka's one rebaken as two Who's going to make more first serves for what it's worth sabelanka 63.8% first serve percentage rebaka to 57.8 first serve uh percentage over the course of this season first serve win percentage

22:37slight advantage rebaka in a second serve one percentage slight advantage sabelanka ace percentage a few more free points come the way of sabelanka, but it would average out to no more than one more per match Maybe two more per match still the point being Who's going to make more first serves like a do I think sabelanka is more dynamic as a returner I do do I think she can do more things meaning she can play the slice she can play the drop shot which with more comfort Does feel like she's a little bit more fluid in and out of corners But there's also just a certainty rebaka knows who she is She's gonna keep on swinging that doesn't mean inconsistencies won't come but sometimes sabelanka Makes choices where you're just thinking to yourself. Why like why did you hit that shot there? Why did you slice that ball? Why did you slice that forehand? Why aren't you driving through you saw none of that in the semi finals against Pagul and by the way Given She lost to rebaka in their last major final given she's looking for her first major title of the season

23:38All the incentives are there for arena sabelanka to stay dialed in the way she was for those two sets against The linear against just Kapakul. I just think sabelanka's best has been better than rebaka as best this year this tournament They both have had wars For abacanachin when and golf obviously both three set battles for And down a set in each of them for sabelanka three sets against noscow. That's the only set she's dropped this tournament I mean rebaka is moving really well rebaka is strengthened in the face of that sabelanka serve She's got to take one away. I take away the slider wide on the doose. I mean sabelanka feasted with that slider wide Plus one in the open space point after point if you're rebaka just stand on that corner make her beat you tea You Baka can blitz and rebaka can also blitz the servant to her body which is kind of where you want that serve to be because if you let her extend and connect into the ball You're just in trouble rebaka has gears to hit because rebaka has the firepower to do so there's a reason the career had to had a seven and 10 overall and seven seven on hard courts

24:47I'm just leaning sabelanka if we see the sabelanka we saw in today's semi final that's the best player in the world And accordingly, I'm going to pick rena sabelanka to win that fifth major title to win that third consecutive us open But it's a it's a pick-up sort of match like six three in the third will roll sabelanka because rebaka is playing well enough certainly to capture a set in this one It's a hell of a final to kick off again our championship weekend of singles action Of course still waiting on our men's final, but I'm excited for Friday semi finals again. You look for Sasha's there of six and three in the career had to head with Karen Hatchinov Ben Shelton three and one in the career had to head with Tiafo I went back and watch their DC match went back and watched Highlights from their us open match look it comes down to Francis Has to find ways Tick to push bend back off of the first serve has to in particular

25:49Find a way to to find some rhythm on the forehand return whether it's with the drive return just low-web bends feed Just like cannot let Ben keep picking on that spot with repetition because if he does like obviously again Now Ben can use that he can play the slider wide to open things up on the ad side play the plus one from there into if I if I'm Francis it sounds simple, but I have to take something away, right? 26:51Add side and he just doesn't want to have again Ben serving into his forehand to over and over again on the do's um He has to get off to a faster start like again you go down two cents to anything against Shelton You know you're probably going to have to win one of those sets back and overcome that deficit in a tie break Which is just a daring proposition against a guy who served was the biggest weapon on the court against Carlos Frick and Elkar as All I uh bring back the slices like again keep that below on Ben don't give him rhythm It's when you give Ben rhythm that he becomes most dangerous if you start to play some slice games with him He'll float some slices back at you. Yeah, he'll chip in charge and try to pressure you that way He's gonna have to be sharp of course out with his passes uh frances, which he just wasn't out of the gates against Mikkelson And Ben's playing with house money like again. He just beat Carlos Frick and Elkar as and Ben has been the guy two 1000 level titles Coming through when the draws have opened up in Canada each of the last two seasons He's been a presence has had plenty of semi-final reps at this point at the majors

27:55As his frances by the way who's been really good in New York in particular These two get to play prime time Friday night. Is there a finally going to be able to actually get dinner somewhere in New York And go to bed at a reasonable hour This is the prime time showdown and the winner is gonna have a very like the most winnable possible first major final matchup Francis has been the guy of his generation Ben's been the guy of late period for the Americans But it was Francis who won again the Orange Bull Francis who won the loaded Kalamazoo Francis who was the first to Really break through even though Taylor Fritz of course had his Memphis moment Um Francis has always been the guy and Taylor got the better of him in 2024 Ah he's been cooking with magic man. I mean again to come back against Mikkelsen to come back against Martin Dom He's already been a couple of Americans But Ben just beat Carlos and Ben has the biggest weapon on the court and as good as Francis typically is against lefties

29:00And by the way you look for Francis in his career against the south paws 62 and 39 overall you take that at the ATP level 44 and 31 overall against top 50 lefties Francis Tiafo. Ooh 14 and 15 overall had a really good stretch where he won seven in a row against lefties has struggled of late Part of that has to do with the development of lefties like Shelton draper learner TN But just beat learner of course in Cincinnati earlier this summer Head says Ben got says Francis I'm going with the head. I'm just not picking against Ben After what we saw in the semi finals. I'll take Ben in another Both guys had two days off by the way. I think we're getting for tightly contested sets I think Ben sneaks out that fourth set in a tie break and then look again hatching off his plates. Verif close

30:01Three victories in their nine matchups hatching off of course Beating is there I've been a couple of masters events in straight sets beat him in Canada three sets last year One major matchup between the two of them Roland Garros 2018 against Verif a five set went on that day I It's better at everything. I don't know how else to say it. He's better at everything than hatching off at this point except for the first four hand I guess hatching off's got the bigger first four hand But hatching off just not not dynamic enough as a return in the face of this verif first serve and the relentlessness of that first serve into the body I just don't think hatching off can attack you in enough ways to break down Sasha's verif Who I think will be able to get a clean enough look on the hatching off service as well as hatching off has served over the course Although again and hatching off coming off of a two set day like a lighter day on courts verif You just wonder if all the court time has accumulated is playing in his seven you know again It's like the Warriors It's like when a team why is it so hard to repeat in the NBA because all the games accumulate over the course of four years

31:04You're playing a hundred games a year when lesser teams are playing 80 82 That's verif he's playing a hundred match yet not a hundred but 75 matches every year and Playing two weeks at all these majors. You saw it accumulate for joke vitch in 2021 And yet I just don't know man There's never going to be a better opportunity again for Sasha's verif to add another infinity stone to his gauntlet Then here in New York. So I just don't see him losing this match. I see him getting through to the final And we'll deal with that on on sunday I suppose or tomorrow as we preview it But my pick would be Shelton versus Verif for the final on the men's side And I'm still leaning sab lanka who was my pre-termin pick to bring home the title as well We're an awesome spot though as we get ready for championship We get at the years final majors so looking forward to enjoying that action looking forward to being back on this podcast To talk through all that action with all of you tennis fans as well.
