You're a weekly escape from the hum. The drum, the bullshit, or your daily life. We are back at it again with what I think will actually end up being our second or third to last Oscar coverage video of the year. Well, for this year, anyways, Oscars, I should say, right,
for the 2020's next pro Ramona, if you will. That sounds right, Charlie, right? We'll have like, yeah, one more video. Next is just the predictions. Yeah, we'll do full on, lock predictions, and then we'll be reactions after that of the actual show. So, and this is our last reaction video before then, because today we'll be doing the actor awards, aka formerly known as SAG, and also BAFTA as well, because BAFTA happened last week and it sounds right. Yeah. We were just a little busy last week. Also, it felt more appropriate to do these last couple together, because for two reasons, I think, actually, we discussed one of them one being it's just more convenient for us, obviously, to do them both at the same time. But also, I do think they'll play a little bit together. I mean, all the voting bodies are already voted by this point anyway. So, can this influence anything? Not really, but it's still interesting to look at what some of these bodies, which you assume there's some SAG members in the Academy. You assume there are some BAFTA members that have influence over people in the Academy at the very least, right? Oh, yeah. And even if there's a lot of theories right now about how it might
really impact the Oscars, because you remember we touched on that idea of you have to watch everything before you vote. And yes, they extended it. And so, there's a lot of people that are still are not done yet. So, yeah, it's a, it's interesting how that's working. I saw, I'll find it in a specific exam. No, it's probably my bad news. Droped all of a sudden in the middle of the week, because they probably finally got the votes in, you know? And they're like, all right, let's publish. Since we have the information now, since we were just, you know, we had this idea of this date, but maybe it was earlier later, whatever it turned out to be, but they said, okay, this is the way we have all the votes now. I wonder, yeah, I wonder if, so I wonder how many people still need to vote for the Oscars, if any, because they said it was locked, but it's probably just the majority of people have voted or something like that. And they don't think it's going to change based on numbers, maybe or something like that. I don't know, like, but, like, I can imagine, like, say, to have 70% of the vote in, and they're like, okay, we're pretty sure this is going to win. You know what I mean? Not like it couldn't still change, but like, that's why they're like, okay, because I remember them saying that it was supposed to be done,
but that's the fact that that's happening is insane. We got to fix that. We got to have a hard date with the man. It's a new rule. So here's the specific example. This was from Will Mavity, who does some below the line news for next best picture, as well as Sky News and BBC. And he said, entirely anecdotal evidence from a small sample size, but it seems like the requirement to watch all the movies this year means people are voting later in the Oscar voting window, rather than the first day or two of voting, because they're still catching up on screeners. And he wrote kind of a personal thing here. He said, makes me wonder if this means sag momentum will have root, will have room to make a bigger impact than some years. And then this was just quoted by Kyle Buchanan, who attends all the events and he does the work for the New York Times. He said, this is happening. The Oscar ballot is now synced to the screening app. And entire categories are grayed out until you finished every nominee in that race. You can check boxes to at least, to a test you've seen the rest, but it's an effective way to, you know, get people watching more.
So saying you know that person that we saw that tweeted that, oh, I just never got around to this thing that was supposedly an academy member. There's no way they are, right? There's no shot in hell. Because you can't, obviously, and as you see, not anymore. You have to, if you are voting and you say you didn't watch a five legs, I kick you, you have to watch that. You cannot cast your vote until you watch that. And there's proof. So that's why I imagine if you're an academy member, you know, obviously you're probably, if you attended, it say you, you saw, if I had legs that kick you last January, right? You're going to have proof that you saw it. So, oh, yeah. Yeah, it's fascinating. You've actually got like a, you know, like if you went to an event, I assume like you can be like, yeah, I have a ticket to this fucking event, and they can be like, all right, we'll do it for you. But they might make you just click on your, I mean, they might just make you, I wonder how it works. I wonder if you actually have to watch the whole thing or if you can just click in and click out into the accounts. I wonder, you know what I mean? Like, I wonder how sophisticated they got with it is like, because you know, YouTube can track how much you watch on a video,
so they could definitely do that. So definitely. So all of that to say, Sag might have a bigger impact this year. So, that being said, I guess let's just jump right into it, Handuk. I suppose so. We'll start with Sag. We'll get a bit of it and it will just, we'll, we'll dive in and we'll react and we'll see what the fuck we think. Yeah, so 32nd Actor Awards, they, they had a couple of moments, you know, when we usually cover TV, but one of the cool moments obviously happening, happening here was a Catherine Rohara who recently passed away, winning outstanding performance by female actor in a comedy series. I just, I find that stuff so awesome. And, you know, obviously it's like, it shows how great her work was, even till her, her final days. So obviously a legend in the film community. So, but I really cool to see her get it acknowledged. And there's a really powerful, you know, speech made and everything. But yeah, the studio cleaned up there.
The pit was doing its thing. Owen Cooper got another big win again, which we finally saw Owen Cooper and something recently, weathering heights is what we saw him in. And yet, the kids got chops for days, but for the movies. I guess let's just jump right off the top. Let's go with supporting performances for first year. Outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role. Duke Sean Penn picks up the victory here from, from Sag after they acknowledge Sean Penn. And this, you know, I remember last year, I felt like there were some awards that we were looking at that. I felt like right at the end, they finally turned back around. Obviously, the big one is a Nora, right? Is, is a Nora was like, you know, we're going through January, we're going through December. And a Nora keeps slipping out of everyone's lists and everything to a point where people like he Madison is no longer even the favorite at one point. And it felt like by the time we finally get to the awards
and they're all said and done, you know, PGA happens, Sag happens, she was back in the front of the line, right? And now, obviously, there was still some debate going into the night, which will happen with some of these awards. But Duke, it almost feels like that is the case with Sean Penn. I think it, it just, it did the full circle. I literally think it did the full circle. Prinicio picking up all the regionals early on. Jacob Alority, Stone's Guardsguard picking up other victories. You know, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, right? And it's like, it reeled itself all the way back around to Sean Penn, picking up the two we're talking about today. So it's like, I mean, it's, what it does for one thing is it shows how great this category has been. We've talked about it and linked the supporting performances in both male and female this year. But what are your thoughts on that? Sean Penn, clearly now in the front of the line, you know, no, Stellan's Guardsguard obviously couldn't have been nominated here.
Of course. But the more important one is the show we're talking about next. So it forced Ellen is eligibility specifically limited to people that are member of the guild. I'm assuming like, I'm assuming, but I don't know that. Or is it just in a way they often favorite against these international movies? So it's kind of, well, I, because I wonder because I don't know what, what the Netherlands, if they're on equity or if they have another agency, I've no idea. You didn't mean like, I assume so. I'm assuming there's an act of agency there, you know, I don't know. So I don't know, but that would necessarily affect an award show per se. But I wasn't surprised to see him win here. Like, as you say, it's, you know, we, I mean, if you go to our, you know, our, our ESC awards we did for ESC fantasy this year, we both gave Colonel Lockjar a villain of the year. So, um, you know, I think we both agree with this. Obviously, it's going to be hard not to pick him for the Oscar. I'm sure, you know, because even with Benicio and other people in there that maybe you could do it, um, and truthfully, like,
what I think this opens the door for is this idea that I talked about earlier this year, where we will still land on the right performance, probably come Oscar time, whatever the, whatever the hell that means. Air quotes all day with that, right? You know, it's all, it's all opinion, right? But, um, but then also Stalin and others can get the love that they, we, we do feel they deserve at some of these other shows, because everybody recognizes this is a year where we have like five, like, pretty standout supporting performances that are worth giving credit to. Um, and so it doesn't surprise me the nature of how things have gone. It's been cool to what kind of see a play out that way. But, um, I do expect him to win at the Oscars, but I don't actually 100% know because you just never know anymore. And you never know. Look, don't worry, how much are they going to love sinners, right? Who made a big deal out of putting him in there? What are they going to do? Are they going to do something with that? That's the thing that you can maybe is the statement putting him in, is the statement putting him in so we can give it to him because no one else did.
Who knows? You know, we don't know. We ought to see all that goes. So, and then we jump to outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. And this is, was an important one because it kind of had our top three right now, which how cool is this top three that we finally have acknowledged of Amy Madigan, Wumi Musaku and Tiana Taylor. We have a strong top three. Obviously, Inga wasn't eligible here, but, you know, as great as Inga's performance is. You know Inga Noel. Yeah, Noinga Noel. As great as it's been, um, she's not been as strong at these awards shows, right? So, we've, we've got our top three. And Amy Madigan picks up the massive win here, which I think similar to Sean Penn has to put her in the front seat. And like, I think more importantly, this was a big one Tiana needed. Now, she got, it was either Globes or Critics Choice. She got one of them. And that was a big deal. And that kind of really brought her momentum back on track.
But now that it's all really starting to line up, she, I think Tiana needed to win this one. Because now I'm starting to picture her at number three. With whom me at number two. So, I mean, Duke, obviously, Amy Madigan winning is awesome. I just, I guess, what are your kind of thoughts on this? I mean, there was some talk. Maybe Odessa could shock. But, you know, I mean, other Timmie movie or somebody who you think could win, but doesn't necessarily, you're not thinking them like, Timmie was last year at this award show. You didn't mean like, um, like Odessa could have been not this year for that movie. Obviously, I'm super down with Amy winning here. If she can somehow go the whole way and win the fucking Oscar, it would be one of the craziest things that we've ever seen. And then like, in, you know, rooting for actually happen. Also, I'd love to see weapons somehow managed to go all the way, all the way. That'd be awesome. I'd put it as far as if someone made a top 50 back in March of last year, April of last year, if people they think could win.
She's not on that list. No. No, no, no, she was in sinners. Or sorry, in weapons. It means like she was a man. This is a Zionist definitely on that list. Ariana Grande will 100% on that list. And then you and Tiana are just because there was hyper on the movies. That's true. Yeah, they probably would just even just because there's been in the top 50. That's crazy. You could almost say top 100. Yeah, you might not be wrong about that. Because who knows who knew who she was before this. And that's not me saying anything about Ariana yet. I'm just saying that even she will acknowledge that she's been working her whole career. And you know, it took her that getting in the end, it's like fucking almost like akin to Adrian Brody, but a lot longer of a time period. You didn't mean like, um, so like what an underdog. What a great story and what a night and day difference in how this award feels and how both of these awards feel this year compared to last year. At this time last year, we knew for three months,
it was Karen Culkin and Zoe Saldania. And it's been so nice that both of these are up in the air. They're true supporting performances. Like Amy Madigan is like how you don't get much more supporting than that. Like, it was a true iconic supporting role. So let's get into we have outstanding performance by female actor in a leading role. And Jesse Buckley completes the sweep before the Oscars. Once she wins the Oscar, it'll be the sweep. Easiest decision. I mean, really it's it. I would have loved to see Rose get some acknowledgment, but I'm glad the regionals gave her some love early on. But yeah, we've been looking for the one all year. There was there was a fuck I can't remember what it was last year. There was one that did the same thing this is done and swept everything up until the Oscar and lost the Oscar. It can happen. It can happen. They could be waiting to give Rose the Oscar. That can't be what they've been doing the whole time, you know? Good hat.
I mean, Lily Gladstone. I mean, a couple years ago, there was a shot, right? She ended up losing the Oscar. So like, it does happen. So, but I don't think it will be happening because I think Jesse's is the best performance. But that's, you know, I'm just saying. Just because, I mean, like, it's part of me that's like, okay, if she completes the circuit, awesome. That'd be fucking incredible to witness. But then, I don't know, just anything ever happened in life, like perfectly like that. I don't know. Again, somehow Kate Blanchett lost for tar, but she also didn't win SAG. So, usually, sometimes the SAG 4 ends up being the Oscar 4, right? It hasn't happened in the past two years because last year, obviously, Demi Moore and Timothy Shalame won. But in the year before, Lily Gladstone picked up the victory. But so, like, it doesn't always happen that it's the same 4. But this is, if there's one, that sticks, it's this one. That's the one I, that's the one I'd be like, yeah.
Okay. If I could see a scenario where just Michael B isn't the winner in, in male, and then it just will ever, that ends up being over the area. I mean, like, Timmy or whoever, right? Like, in, uh, it just, and then see other three. Like, I could see those three Sean Penn, Jesse Buckley, Amy Madigan, you know, maybe it ends up being movie, but it's, you know, in my head right now, it's still Amy, and then the other one just goes whichever way it goes. You know, that could go fuckingly over all I know, you know. And then outstanding performance by a male actor and leading role. And one of the best moments, um, we've seen this award show, that, that reaction went fucking triple platinum of, oh, man, I forgot who read it. But she, she, like, screamed Michael B. Jordan when she saw the name. And it was, it was awesome to see. And it feels like they finally got this back on this. I don't want to sound like, oh, they finally pulled their heads out of their ass, but like, come on, man, what have we been doing?
I understand that there was so much hype around Marty Supreme and Timmy's performance. And Leo and, and how, like, it's almost the perfection of a subtlety performance and how he plays it, right? And I get all of that. But what Michael B. Jordan was doing in sinners with these twins and how he kept them so distinctive and his chemistry, etc, etc, for him to win sad. Not only to the technical side of doing, not just the scenes, but just individually as each character in, individual scenes and then going back, playing the other half of it as the other character, having a body double to just stand it for the physical motions that he's doing in the scenes. Also, shout out that double that had to match everything he was doing in the scenes, basically. Even performance-wise, so that he could have something to play off of. You know what I mean? I mean, so many elements. I mean, this is why I talk about sinners as like, if we don't fucking award sinners, we will regret this later in life. You know, like, we'll look back and be like, what the fuck? How's that? Yeah, what? It better not blank.
Like, there's some movies you're looking at and you're like, you can't blank at the Oscars. Please, this isn't a fucking Elvis. Like, this is so much stronger than Elvis, man. And that's the one I always go to that completely blank that people were like, what? No, I mean, I just... Okay, they're making the white version of this movie now. This is me. So Jesse Plemons' getting the nomination was awesome to see. But yeah, I just... This gives me hope because the past three months, when we've really had a chance to sit and analyze all the performances, it just felt like Michael B. Jordan's in sinners, to me was like, so much better than the other four Oscar performances, especially now that we've seen Wagner. And it just, it felt like there was no hope. Like, it was just, oh, we're giving him the nomination. But it's so funny. The way they talked about Wagner's performance and I'm not shitting on Wagner, I think he did a really good job with his performance. But the way they talked about his performances, it's like there was like this tier of performances.
It was like, you know, you have your guys at the top and you had like, you know, like basically, like, it was almost it felt like, um, Jesse fucking, you know, uh, for a while, they almost felt like Jesse Timmy and Ethan, or it's not going to be Jesse fucking, um, Michael and Ethan Hawk were kind of just like, hangers on and we're like, well, we need to fill out the category and they were, yeah, the better performances. But we were always saying it was like revolving door at the bottom of like five guys. What we're learning now, I think, is that it's not like that at all. Michael B. Drew was always alive. It just never worked out like that for some reason. You know, to mean like, if you hang around in everyone's top five list, yes, eventually, it has to come to and, and I think the thing that plays into it too, right? But it's just like, it would give me fighting, right? That's what it felt like, you know, to mean and then like, because maybe there's people over time too that are in the same mindset that maybe, you know, it's the idea of you, when you first watch the movie, you recognize, damn, it's a good performance.
But some time goes by and you start really thinking about that performance and how great he did it and you're like, no, this isn't just good. This is, this is Oscar winning good. Like, this is a great performance. This is worthy of winning the Oscar. And if you take, you know, opinions we were talking about like back in November on the podcast, and this is why I love that we, we are able to have our, our minds grow with this too. Because I would say about a month ago, we were both on here and we, it was right after we saw Wagner and we were kind of talking about it. We both had Michael at number one and it's like, if you were to go and only listen to a podcast from us from November till then, you'd even like, what the fuck happened? But that's just sometimes how it goes. Like, this performance really resonates in your mind. And if that, all that stuff we just read at the beginning is true, dude, I think this is going to win the Oscar now. This definitely has a really good chance, I'd say. Because I would have said 2-o-t, it's either 10-year Leo, right?
I would have, in fact, I almost, you know, thought like maybe I should throw 10 bucks on Leo because he was so like against the wall. It felt like three months or this was in January when I saw that. I was like, maybe I'll throw 10 bucks on Leo just in case. If I would have tossed 10 bucks on Michael B. Jordan, now might turn into 200 bucks right now. Like, obviously his odds have way shifted. Like, now if you throw 10 bucks, you might win 15. But still, I digress, I don't know, just what do you think of that idea of kind of maybe we are not alone in this aspect of acknowledging at first when we saw the performance, it was good. But now beating Timmy, beating Leo, beating Ethan, and beating Jesse at SAG, getting awarded by the other actors, and it being like this cultural event being celebrated by everyone it seems like. In terms of momentum, I mean, where does this kind of take your brain? Michael B. Jordan. And this will heavily depend upon how much people have actually got their votes in already, right? Because like I said, if we already hit that threshold where like,
it doesn't matter anymore, then it might not matter, right? But um, and that's not to say that there's not like this cultural movement thing that could happen. I mean, it happened around Black Panther with regards to its box office and stuff like that. So, not that I'm saying it's the same thing. But what I'm saying is that reaction tells me there are people waiting for these Black creators to be awarded. You know what I mean? And they really want to see it. Absolutely. Especially people they feel the deserving only Michael B. And obviously Ryan Kuhler as well. So it's like, you know, I would love to see that happen. And I'm glad to wait at least got this moment because it's kind of like the Timmy moment from last year where we all knew Timmy. Yeah, absolutely destroyed that performance when I say destroyed. I mean, like a good way. You know, like he absolutely fucking annihilated it. And we also kind of knew, well, I mean, it's just a year worth tough. You know, like I still continue. You only can see Timmy the shale man one scene. Like outside of that entire movie, that's that's Bob Dylan. Yes. So I think it's like, it's cool that we get to have this moment at the very least.
I do think that it can shift the tides a little bit. I would love to see that happen because I deck and I'd you know, I'd love to see somehow this somehow make its way to the Oscars. I'd be awesome, you know. Oh man, if in, if in two weeks, you know, that Monday or who are we getting this to Sunday, we record it Monday, it'll be out. If we're talking Michael, be Jordan winning best actor, dude, I am, I'm going to have the biggest smile on my face. Like I am fully embracing this performance now and rooting for it. So what an awesome guy too, man. Like he might not just be. Tim's like a genuine human, you know what I mean? Like I, he does and he seems like the kind of guy that, you know, he, he was an actor, people liked. But like Timmy, he might start being recognized as, damn, he's one of the best working today. And I think sinners hopefully put that on a lot of people's radars of. Yeah, this isn't just the face you know. I'm trying to be the goat.
I know, I actually, I have to watch his speech. I need to see what he said. I'm certainly genuinely pulled it up as well, because I wanted to see the reaction and his, his reaction to winning it. So I have that pulled up on YouTube. And then I'll say any performance by a cast and emotion picture went to sinners. I do think this is still easy for the Oscar for casting. I mean, look at the fucking cast, dude. It is, it is fucking insane. What they created. And the fact that the Oscars went as hard as they did for it, it's no surprise. Look, I love one battle, but does it not? And I know I'm overhyping myself and stuff. This doesn't happen. I need you to just let it go, right? So I'm mentally preparing for that. But isn't it feel like the Oscars could really do something crazy with sinners that the other award shows just didn't do like. It could. Look, it could. There is still a world where PTA wins best director in the film wins best film. But I just, it's one everything else.
I mean, it would be a, it would be huge. But like, and we're there now. And I avoided asking this question because it's hard to say. But we've had a lot of time to sit on it now. And we just have a long discussion about a lot of things in sinners, right? And do we think that one battle is a better movie than sinners? And I got to tell you, my answer is no. I don't think it is. I, I personally think it's, it's, I'm not going to say significantly better, but I do think it's better. Like, I think they're both worthy of winning best picture. But I just know if I had a vote with all 10, you know, taking Hamden at a side, I could easily be comfortable putting one battle, you know, in that top spot. Um, I just think it's one of those films and it's, it's like we, it's the same thing, right? It's, it's unfortunate for sinners or it's going to be unfortunate for one battle, whichever one loses, that they're up against each other.
Because they both fucking sweep the floor with a Nora last year. As much as I like the Nora, it's not even a competition. They both absolutely dismantle a Nora. So, and that's the way it would have been in this awards show. Now, in terms of the movies I like, I'm taking my opinion out of it. I'm just saying in terms of what I think would have happened with awards-wise. So, yeah, it's unfortunate for whichever one loses. But I mean, again, that's also including Hamden. It sucks Hamden. It's going to lose too, potentially. So, it's a hell of a year. But I think no matter what, I think sinners locks up our first casting. Definitely is going to be a heavy favorite for my predicting at least. So, I don't know what any of the thoughts on that before we jump to Daphtha. Any of the thoughts on what you were saying? I mean, I just think that I think it goes back to what I was saying. I think that there's this choice that they have, where we know both of these movies are
top tier, like A-plus, you know, quality movies. And it's like, which one do you actually choose to acknowledge? And I think that people can get mad at me for saying this, that what they choose is going to be a cultural marker for the times. The people are going to look back on. Not necessarily this being that indicative of anything, but I think if you're a person that's into this space, and you see what happens here, you kind of will understand what I'm getting at. I mean, one's a revolutionary movie, right? And which, even though it was wrote 20 years ago, it feels very real today. And then, you know, sinners being the horror film with, you know, said in the 1930s. And they say that I'm willing to, you know, not give PTA a million percent credit and say that he probably updated it for the times. I'm just going to throw that out there, you know, like, because he made it out, like, or made it a couple of years ago at least. Either way, both movies have a very strong message. So it's easy for people to rally behind them.
So it's, that's the thing, right? It's also going to be very... I just say, if it goes the way I think it will, it'll be very typical of Hollywood, I feel like. I don't think, I don't agree. I think one battle winning would be very, very big. It's just the favorite. That's all. Oh, I mean, for different reasons. I think what type of movie it is. I'm just like a type of... The type of creators making them and the messages that they put into their movies. I think one movie is its own thing and one battle can go off and be its own thing and have its interesting message about, you know, revolution into society and all this and all that, right? And I think sinners is trying to say something really, really uncomfortable, you know, like that I think a lot of people aren't willing to confront. And I think that's why it's hard to award a movie like that for some people, I feel. Even if they don't kind of realize it subconsciously, there's a part of them that leans toward a movie like one battle more just inherently.
Yeah, I mean, look, three-oddies, they're great movies, but one's got to lose. And I guess let's get into BAFTA with that being said, where one battle picked up best film and best director, which I think, if the producer's guild wasn't the final like, you know, checkmate, BAFTA awarding one battle over Hamnet is, I think it shows how many people just love this movie. And then obviously, PTA winning best director, I think he's literally won it every step of the way as once we hit like a critic's choice. Like, I think he's literally won it every single time. So, no real shock there. Like Declowy, wouldn't it want somewhere? No, I don't think she did. Oh, I think we thought she might win it at the one that she won last year or not last year,
last time when she won one. I don't think she did that. I think she missed on that. Whatever it was, she won the gloves, the critics, BAFTA, and what did she win the year? She won one specific award, the year she won the Oscar. And I can't remember what it was. And we were like, if she wins this, she might do it, you know, like, I forget what she did. There was one award we were looking at. I can't remember which one it was, but obviously she didn't win it otherwise. We would have made a big deal out of that. But now it's been the PTA versus Ryan Kugler fight here. So, again, he's won away from completing the sweep. Him and Jesse Buckley. Josh Safty won one of these, right? There was like a maybe like a brief thought about him, or maybe he was nominated where he wasn't expected. And so he started getting nominated more something like that. Like, yeah, he beat out Guillermo del Toro at the Oscar. Which that'll get you on the other list, obviously, you know, to mean so, you know, at the very least, even if you're not going to win. So, one of the bigger shocks here, we had Robert Aramayo, when best actor in a leading role for I swear. So I went to sneak back around.
Good for him to really, I mean, and also good for them to kind of be like, hey, we're going to pick our guy here. Like, we believe in this performance. The fucking British footly. Oh, yeah, we believe in this performance. So it's not going to get awarded anywhere else. Obviously, you know, so, and they're like, hey, we'll give it a shot. Fuck it. But this might have been the first sign of, you know, Timmy and Leo aren't as strong if they're not winning here either. And then obviously, I'll be honest, I didn't take Robert winning anything to take anyone away from any of these other guys. Cause yeah, he beat all of them. But they didn't, I mean, in theory, they've been beating him everywhere else. And he didn't even get the nomination. So they've been beating him. So it's like, you know, it's like, it doesn't, does it make it look like, oh, could one of the other guys, I don't think Ethan, Michael, or Jesse picked up any momentum. I think that Michael already had his momentum. If he had any at this point, no, I don't think it's them picking up momentum as it is. I don't think Leo and Timmy lost any from this. You know, I think they just, I feel it, you know,
like, to a certain point. Like, because they're not winning any of these. Like, Timothy Shalamet's performance is clearly not Jesse Buckley's, if he can't win this, or can't win, Seth is Jesse Buckley is Jesse Buckley's if he can't win this, you know, like, I I'm sorry, my question is, it's Jesse Buckley, like, it's Jesse Buckley, like, the weird outlier of the Oscars this year, where it's just so above almost everything but rose. And it's like, you know, like, and then because people were saying that Timmy was on par with this. And I think it's clearly proving Jesse Buckley. I mean, I thought that was just and they were, dude, there was talk. I mean, it was as much of a lock as this one in January. And I think it's clearly proving those people were just illusional. Like, he picked up two big wins quickly. And I, all the credit in the world for that. But like, he's, Robert Aramayo is beating him at BAFTA. And, you know, Michael B. Jordan beat him at saying, like, that doesn't necessarily mean sad. I think it's like a little bit less to not
think we ever do because they gave it to him last year. And we know they don't go back to back with people usually. So it's like, it's, that's, that doesn't hurt Timmy. I feel like, I feel like that it doesn't, it helps Michael a lot, but I don't think it hurt. It maybe hurts Leo, because he didn't get, he didn't get that either. But like, I don't know, like, I will. And what could hurt Timmy then? Is there any? Timmy would be not having won anything at this point, I think. If he had not won a single thing, I'd say he's dead, you know, like, okay. So obviously, Robert picked up that. Jesse Buckley, with Hamnet. And then the same too, we just talked about with SAG, Sean Penn picks up best actor. But this time, Wunmi Musaku picks up best actress in the supporting. So that was a big one. Obviously, there were thoughts maybe Enga could win here. But more importantly, she beat Tiana Taylor, which Tiana Taylor definitely lost stock losing these two. Like, I'm 100% nominated.
Like Odessa doesn't surprise. Enga loses this one. But Wunmi wins. The center's performance wins. Yeah, that's, that is lost stock for Tiana Taylor. And it almost feels like she's number three now. So, definitely could still win the Oscar. But, you know, I have a lot of hard time with people being super confident in that pick. But Sean Penn, you know, similar line of thought we were just talking about getting right back on track, BAFTA, SAG, Oscar, boom. Right back on track, he's now won the majority of the precursors in terms of the major award shows. So just like that, he took the lead. Now, it's been splitting a lot. So that's not the biggest thing in the world. But yeah, it's nice to get him back on track. And what's funny is we might go into all of this with Benicio Del Toro not winning any of the major award shows. When he was at one point,
I think he won like seven regionals in a row and we're like, what is happening? Yeah, I, that's, that's really fascinating to see what's going on with Benicio. You know, it's fascinating though. I don't know how, like, how this is managed to happen. The most consistent person across this award for some reason has been Paul Mescule. And I have no idea why. Like, I'm not saying performance isn't good. I just, no one wants to award him anything. You know what I mean? So it was constantly nominated. Why is he there? Which is what made it so shocking that he got beat out at the Oscar because he's been nominated everywhere, everywhere except the Oscar. So fascinating that that happened. But hey, Delroy, people were passionate. I'm not taking a shot of Delroy. We thought that performance should have been a lock from the beginning of the year, but like, or from whenever it was the center's rock. But like, I mean, you can find a quote of Charlie saying, I think this is a little worth the performance. And I'm like, I mean, hey, I mean, it's really early in the year. I mean, you've seen to see if it sticks out, you know?
So like, as he says, never wrong just early. Best screenplays went chalk, Googler, and PTA. Best animated Zootropoulos 2. I swear one best casting, which, you know, don't know what to do with that. Sentimental value best film, not in the English language. Probably good for that. Best cinematography going to one battle. So beating centers and train dreams doesn't do anything for me for the Oscar, but I think it's good to know that it does have some love there for it. But then again, if people love this movie as much as we think they might, it could win cinematography. So not impossible.
We had costume and makeup go to Frankenstein as well as production. So it got the trifecta, which I think we're still leaning for both of our Oscar predictions. Best editing one battle as well. So beating F1 there, if it's going to win editing in cinematography, yeah, I'll tell you this much, Duke. Spending on our early cinematography isn't a night. If it wins cinematography, you can wrap it up. That would be a big one. That might be the editing, if you will, from a Nora last year. When a Nora one editing, it was kind of the shock of, oh shit, they really like this movie. So, I mean, there's like a lot, I mean, honestly, I think that's one of the reasons why I'm so excited going to this Oscar is kind of, I think it'll kind of be like last year where like it's going to be, there's going to be a lot of questions, like there's movies that could be maybe potentially win stuff that we're not like 100% sure. And like maybe that's a signal that what we thought was going to happen isn't going to happen or that what we thought was going to happen
is going to happen. And I'm also hoping that that means that like, well, think something like that's happening and then it will actually be wrong. It will actually be a different tealy. We should have been reading all time or something like that or I don't know. This is mixing more exciting. I like seeing different stuff being awarded because it means like you can definitely see different, like I just like the idea that there's different variations that we could see at these awards shows that might be a little bit different. Like again, that's like, I think that's my biggest takeaway from this year is it's like kind of like I thought it would be. There are things being awarded at different shows or things that are looking different than maybe you would think. And because of that, it makes it more exciting, I feel like so. Yeah. And that's really set us up with, you know, like we were talking about with supporting actor, you know, so with everyone getting a chance at the goal, you know, it's just it's really fun. So, yeah, best score centers, best sound F1, VFX avatar, nothing too shocking here.
Outstanding British film was HamNet and our rising star went to Robert Ramiya, which, you know, makes it hell of a lot of sense when later than anyone best actor. So, no, no shock with that. But yeah, I mean, look, I think going in, we definitely get more of an open mind right now. We have more of an open picture. And look is cinematography. I mean, this might be the biggest one to look at here from BAFTA. Like, I believe it's the, that award is happening soon with that, the cinematographers. So, what is it? The ASC? ASC awards American Society of cinematographers. So, that's happening. We will have that by the weekend. So, I think what we'll have to do, we'll just have to find
something else to record and tack that on to it, whatever the reaction is to that. Like, because I want to talk about that, but I also don't know what else we have to talk about. So, we'll just maybe we'll plan like a random ass fucking like mini video of some kind. Yeah, because what could that mean? I mean, last year, Maria wanted it. So, it's like it didn't really... Maybe we'll see if there's any other random ass regionals we can talk about or we could find some pre-Oscar... I wonder when those Oscar ballots are going to start dropping, you know? Like... Yeah, you know, like the ones like the next week. Yeah, I hope so, right? Because... I got to imagine that we had like a couple weeks out last time, maybe because people aren't able to vote as quickly this time. Yeah, it's a push-knit to the last minute. So, but yeah, so the upcoming awards we have, March 7th, the Cinema Audio Society. So, and then the Society of Camera Operators as well. And then the 8th, we have the Brighters Guild, as well as the American Society Ascend photographers, as well as the Editing Award, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Golden Real Awards. And then, that's us up for Academy Awards
the 15th. So, it's here. I mean, the time is now, if you will. And yeah, I think the plan is the next weekend, we're doing our voting plus predictions, which was a fucking blast last year. I still have what's it called? I still have our document for it, too. So, like, you know, the goal was we can track that year by year and see what we would have voted for in the Oscars and see if our opinion changes as time goes on, right? Because that's always one of those things is, you know, people talk about, oh, the biggest snubs of all time, yada, yada, yada, right? But maybe that's, as time goes on, opinion change. And this is like, it's pretty fun. Like, so, yeah, we'll do, we'll do our thing where we have our vote for, you know, like, 20 categories, basically just pretty much most of them. And then our prediction of what we think is going to win. So, and it ends up being this really fun thing of, you know, because then we
also, we did this last year where we ranked the best pictures. We ranked the best directors and as well as all the four acting things and how that bled into our vote because that is how they do the voting at the Academy Awards. You go one through 10 and then that's how they take everyone's votes. So, that created a fun, a fun thing. So, it's kind of crazy. It's already here, dude. And we have this big, because let's be honest, if Timmy won SAG, right, we would be sitting here thinking, okay, it's really just the two awards, really just Amy Madagans, that maybe has a chance to change. But the fact that all of this is happening, dude, there's three that we might have different fucking predictions of who's winning. Like, that was not the case last year. So, yeah, this is going to be fascinating to see how it all works out. I guess any closing
thoughts for the folks at home? Um, I just like, it's been kind of my closing refrain throughout most of these things is that like, I'm just like, as we've gotten closer and closer, I just keep getting more excited for what's going to come, you know, when we get to these actual awards and, you know, we're actually there now. It doesn't really feel real, you know, that we're about to like in two weeks have like one of our biggest, you know, hit on our virtual tuxedos again. Yep. And have a one of our biggest shows of the year, you know, and then talk about some, some fun shit. And I'm actually really excited to sit down and actually watch the Oscars with you, because we haven't had so much to watch every award show this year. Um, so it'll be fun to actually get in there. I can't wait to see if they do Golden North, they do I lied to you or both at the Oscars. I believe they're doing both. I think those are the only two performances. Well, it makes sense. And those are the two big, big songs, those are the ones that are competing for the win, you know, so like that will be, that will be really fun to see. I can't wait to say EJ out there. I hope they open the show with Golden. I'm doubtful. Oh, man. I have feels. It'd be so good. It'd be so good. I'll tell you more than just Golden too. I hope they haven't like you a little bit of Golden, a little bit of takedown, a little bit of, uh,
this is what it sounds like. You know, I mean, I'd be awesome. Just give them the whole whole thing because they did multiple songs from Wicked and also I think one was from Wiz and the other one was from, um, just the Wizard of Oz, obviously, you know, um, so I'd love to see it, you know, um, oh yeah. But anyway, um, yeah. So yeah, thank you guys for joining us. If you're interested in any that hit the follow button on our page because we're going to be here next week and that's going to be an awesome blast to do our predictions. If you went and saw Scream 7 or your ghost face fan, et cetera, et cetera, we just dropped it like nearly four hours of fucking content talking about ghost face and Scream 7. So if that interests you, look, we got it all here. All right. We're revolutionaries. We're fucking, we're breaking the mold here. So we get a little bit of everything. We got other people doing book clubs now, you know, I call it a movie club. You like it. I love it. No, but if you're into books, good guy, we have them all. So no, thank you very much for joining us
