懺悔とは、私の為せる所の過てるを悔い、その償ひ難き罪を身に負ひて悩み、自らの無力不能を慚ぢ、絶望的に自らを抛ち棄てる事を意味する
田辺 元（たなべ はじめ、1885年2月3日 – 1962年4月29日）は、日本の哲学者。西田幾多郎とともに京都学派を代表する思想家。元京都大学教授、京都大学名誉教授。1947年帝国学士院会員、1950年文化勲章受章。
戦争を煽った有力者の中で、文学の高村光太郎は岩手の山荘で懺悔の厳しい生活を送ったし、徳富蘇峰も隠遁したが、その心境は同じく思想面で国家主義を推進した田辺元のこの厳しい懺悔の言葉と同じであったろう。田辺も軽井沢で隠遁生活を送るのだが、「日本民主主義」を提唱するなど、その思想は進化していったようである。
