تبدأ هذه القصة بانتقال "حامد" الفلاح البسيط إلى القاهرة ليعمل بوابًا لإحدى العمارات، بعد ذلك بفترة يتزوج حامد من "فتحية" إحدى بنات قريته ويحضرها إلى المدينة الكبيرة لتعيش فيها.. تتفاعل فتحية مع سكان العمارة وتتعرَّف عليهم لتحاول الاندماج معهم لكن تبقى نظرتهم لها بانّها زوجة البواب فالبعض يريدها للخدمة والبعض الآخر يرى فيها مشاعًا متاحًا للمتعة... يُعالج يوسف إدريس في قصته هذه التفاوت الطبقي والثقافي بين المصريين في تلك الفترة التي اتسمت بالتباين الشديد كما يتناول فكرة تسلّ" الأفكار على عقل الإنسان وما يمكن أن تنتهي إليه إذا ما انساق وراءها. بعد الانتهاء من هذه القصة ستعرف لماذا لقّب يوسف إدريس ب"تشيخوف العرب" ولماذا جرت مقارناتٌ كثيرة بين قصته هذه والرواية الخالدة "جاتسبي العظيم".
