West coming, Tim continues to lead the national league and batting, he's hitting a road bus 362. Run fairly at 350 and then Dick Groot 341. Now Craig with a two-one pitch, a drive hits fouled, going high in the air and off to the right, no play in the count two and two. Henry Young of the Braves and Leon Wagner of the Angels leads the major leagues in a home run, each with 13. Aaron leads the national league and RBIs with 34, Wagner of the majors with 37. Cardinals start the game and add four and a half games behind first place San Francisco. They feel they have a chance to gain some ground, flagging the meds over the weekend while the Dodgers and Giants collided San Francisco.

10:53A space above the middle, grabbed on a hot by Fernandez, take the first in time to get it. Nice play by Chico Fernandez, he went in behind second base. He went up with the ground ball with his glove hands down and then threw on the first in time. Now there are two away, nobody on, the batter is Bill White. And the slugging has come from Ernie Banks and Ron Sano as well as Billy Williams. While a messer away over this weekend, Tegas will be on sale for the Cubs series at our future home games at the Polo Grounds. Grounds at those stations near the 42nd and Vanderbilt ramp and the long and waiting room of the Penn station. These hits have been rather hard to come by, I've ready on this road trip he has been in somewhat of a batting slump then. 18:17Now on a hit that's one and a walk. The New York Mets have runners on first and second, nobody out. That brings up just you call him. Two, two hitting and one, seventy-nine. Now the Cardinals look for the bun before you're even with a bag at third. Bill White back toward fielding up at first. Way inside, that one almost victim. One ball in those strikes. Yups in the sole fire this year has been bothered by a wildness. His last time out in six innings he walked four. Here's the pitch on the way, a smash foul going down the right field line.

19:18Due to get around on that one, he ripped it and it goes foul. One ball, one strike. This year Bob Gibson has been beaten twice by a Cincinnati. Once by the Braves, he beat the Dodgers ten to seven. I guess the Mets last year he won two and lost one. Right now the count one and one on two to come and Charlie Neil the Undeckheader. It's by Gibson off the outside corner and two to ignore it two and one. Day game tomorrow and a double header Sunday and then the Mets will be coming home to open a good homestay. Bill entertain five different national league balls and so the next homestay. Danny Murts brings Pittsburgh in for the first time this year. He busts a foul coming right straight back in the count two and two. Johnny Keene and the Cardinals will be in on that next homestay.

20:20They play in New York on the seventh, eighth and ninth of June. That's a weekend at four game series. A night game on Freddie and night and ladies big game on Saturday and a double header on Sunday the ninth of June. Now two runners take a lead count two and two on two to come. A foul ball off the first back of stairs and out of play. When Sammy Taylor joins New York here in St. Louis tomorrow. That means the case you will have to dispose of one player in order to make room for it. Now Gibson makes the stop. Here's the Smiths to Chuchu. A high drive that may go foul well. It's deep to right field and it's going to be a foul ball off the facing of the upper deck. Chuchu leaned into that one but it was fouled by eight or ten yards down the right field and off the facing of the upper deck.

21:28Tim Harkness on second he was hit by a pitch. Eddie Cranepool on first, Eddie drew one. Now the pitch. Low it's ball three and the string is out three and two. Gibson got in front on Eddie Cranepool but he had a good eye and drew a walk on three and two. When it was three and two on Cranepool Harkness was running. Let's keep an eye on the runners now. Gibson a flamethrower. Two runners take a lead. There go the runners, the pitch is high ball four and the basses are loaded. So I'd give Gibson with a hit batsman and two walks. The bass is now loaded and Charlie Neill coming on to hit.

22:28Charlie hitting a 225 with one homer and nine RBI's. Cardinals now have the infield willing to consider run to try and get two and the on field playing him to hit the opposite way. Fast ball high, one ball and no strikes. Gibson has been wild high with that blazing fastball so far here on the second inning. Harkness the lead runner on third, next pitch on the way. A groundwater bounce towards second base. It goes through the center field through a base head. One runner's there. Cranepool taking for the plate. He'll come into score and the next lead to the nothing. Charlie Neill, the nice level swing, building a ground single right back up the middle. Just beyond the range of Hullian hobby air, he tried to flag it down on a backhand play and back a second. So give Neill two runs back and down and the meds lead to nothing.

23:32Runners on first and third, Juju raised from first around the third and the hitter now is Jiko Fernandez. Now Gibson out the stretch, still nobody out. Here's the pitch. He bunched the ball and it's a foul ball. Fowl ball, foul ball because he burned it twice before he got out of the batter's box on the back lash. It was spun it into the ground a second time. So it's a foul ball and Fernandez will have to come back. Suicide squeeze play wasn't on. Juju was waiting to see whether or not the ball was on the ground. That's two in the card and there's nothing runners on first and third, nobody out. Now Gibson with a full wind up and the pitch on the way, taking a pie. Charlie Neill broke and started to go, then slammed on the brace, figured perhaps he couldn't make it.

24:36One ball and one strike, Gibson forgot and worked from the wind up. Runners on first and third, Juju's on third and Charlie Neill with a two run single is on first. The one one pitch, swing and a miss by Fernandez, one ball and two strikes. Roger Craig got crashed in the on deck circle. The old professor, a Casey Stingel, has his left leg, propped up near the top step of the dugout as he watches all the goings on. Now Gibson with a count of one and two, the pitch to Fernandez. A ground ball, it's lowly on the right side, leveled by a hobby here and now he throws to first in time getting Fernandez. And Goldman comes into score to make it free to nothing. If Fernandez and RBI, well, it was hit down toward the end of the bat.

25:36It had a lot of spin on it, it wasn't hit too hard. Howdy here, I had trouble picking it up. He wasn't going to try to make a play on the plate on that one. So get Fernandez and RBI. So the New York match to head in the score to run for Roger Craig in 26 and a third innings. Now I have free home for him here at the top of the second. Roger the batter with Neill on second one down. A slow grounder back toward the mountain, Gibson throws to first, Neill races on to third after he turns to Fernandez as Gibson to top batter looking back. Now there are two away, and coming up the hit will be Jimmy Periphal. Jimmy tap in the dirt out of those spikes. Periphal now only has 13 here at Major League Baseball. He's had some great years. He has just as happy as he can be to be with the New York Betts and to play for Casey Stingle.

26:36He has always been very fond of Casey. Outside and low it's ball one. As a youngster when he was playing in a right field for Lou Boudreau with the Red Sacks and he used to battle the New York Yankees. Casey many times acclaimed his outstanding fielding and helped him to become a good ball player. A foul ball, a lofted back upstairs and out of play, one ball and one strike. Periphal over one, he fly to right center in the first inning. Now the pitch by Gibson whacked foul out to the right, one ball and two strikes. Charlie Neill on third at three runs are in, there are two away where in the top of the second. Gibson with that big wind up, now the pitch. Outside and high two and two. Travis fellow doesn't waste any time out there.

27:36He works fast and also that ball gets to the plate awfully fast too. Now Periphal lagging the batter around, cocks it off the right shoulder. Jimmy bends from the waist, feet close together. At the end of an inning and a half the score of the New York Mets three and the St. Louis Cardinal's nothing. Well you know you can't really tell if a pitcher has it until you see how he does against the top hitters around the circuit.

For tonight's game the meds have the two catchers. Lawrence Coleman and Norm Sherry. Sammy Taylor is due to join the team tomorrow. Sammy heard he's armed during the Florida instructional league play. And tried to work it out during spring training and then went on the buffalo to get a real tip-to-tap shape. 33:53One ball and two strikes. Joe Schultz on the coaching lines at first for St. Louis and Vern Benson on the lines at third. I throw the first not in time. Boyer dabbing back in. That's three in the Cardinals one pitch back. Craig punted off the hill comes Craig back here and grabbed the throw. He's out at first base. Beautiful fielding play by Roger Craig. He'll go as a sacrifice. Altman moves on to second. But it was certainly not intended as such. Javier was puntin' all the way trying for a base hit.

All you'd have to guess from that, that the fire is going to go along with their new acquisition in left field and play to Bob Skinner.

37:04That's savage that they got for the Philadelphia Phillies. And they're looking for some pinch hitting from the bench. Of course Jerry Lynch is one of the best of that. And Skinner should help the sits in that a ball glove because he'll be hitting in a ballpark that has a short center field fit and his power is straight away. Now, however the batter, the pitch back crank, foul ball, it down the third baseline. Those pirates who come to New York for the first time of a next home stand, they have really committed themselves to go with their young talent. Phil Mazorowski, a veteran from a standpoint of major league experience, but still a young man is really the only experienced man in the infield. Don Clinton and Dick Skowfield, who has been a utility player until this year, and then the $175,000 bonus chance to Bob Bailey at third. One run in, two down, we're in the last half of the second. 38:04A smash hit hard, and it's a decent over the bag going in foul ground down toward the bullpen. Oldman comes into score, and Oliver goes into second and the hard hit two-base hit. He really might style it. He'll try to make a backhand play, but that ball is over his head and going down the line before he can get over there. So the card, no fighting right back in it, is now a three to two ball game, and the hitter is Bob Gibson. As far as a real good-hitting pitcher, he's batting at 308-4 for 13.
