I am live once again from Dallas, Texas, where the first night of the R&C midterm convention is a very unique circumstance that the president has called for. I kicked off just a couple of hours and I will be headed over to the arena. I was hearing a lot of different stories this morning about difficulties getting through security

1:00and quite frankly some technical problems that were happening around the arena. I think it would be better just to get on back to the hotel, which is only a few blocks away from the American Airlines arena and just do the show here. And then tonight I will be out in a bout. I talk to a lot of folks I plan to talk to the Republican who was running for the United States Senate challenging Mark Warner, his name is Bert Mrs. Sawa. You have seen him on this program a couple of times and he was with the Virginia delegation this morning at breakfast, which was MC by former Virginia governor Glenn Younggood to hear from him. He's very polite to me and nice, which I'm appreciative of. I'll also tell you a little bit about what I heard for Newt Gainrich this morning at the Virginia delegation. I would say they're probably about 50, 60 people who are along for the ride here at this event. I say along for the ride not as a derogatory characterization, but unlike

2:01real conventions where there are votes where you actually are casting a vote to nominate an individual as president and vice president of the United States to carry the banner for your political party. This thing is, I mean it's a show and I am assuming that the Republican National Committee and president Trump have pulled out all the stops to put on quite a show tonight. I was talking to a couple of the different chair people from different states. We had a big event last night with seven different southern states gathered and a lot of the chairs were there. This will be one of the few events that they can attend because there's so many other RNC events they've got to go to and they said you know we planned all of our events because we thought Trump was going to talk with his big speech on Thursday night and no offense, but Trump never follows the script and goes too long and you know people will be leaving on Friday so they're not really focused on partying

3:05or they might want to go party, but the camp because the president will be talking and then once everything was planned apparently Donald Trump personally intervened and said no I want to give my speech first which I mean maybe that makes good sense maybe you know it's not the protocol but with Trump you're just they're not going to follow the protocol he's not going to follow the so tonight Wednesday night is the president's keynote address I'm not sure exactly what time it will start you know we had good information at the last convention about when the president was going to speak and he went on late and he went like double the amount of time that he was scheduled to speak and I was at that event I was a delegate at that event I was sitting there like man you know I'm in the room and everybody here is a Trump supporter and they're kind of excited to see him alive after the assassination attempt but somebody gave the guy the wrap-up sign right you know it was just

4:11one of those things who went on forever and I just don't know what we will encounter tonight but maybe that's the hook for a Donald Trump event is that you don't know what to expect and so everyone will gather in this room tonight the people who aren't watching football who are interested in politics we'll tune in to see what the president has to say what his agenda for the future is whether he can articulate some things that he feels good about with first two years of his term and the folks who are watching football maybe you know if they've got an interested politics they'll switch back and forth but it will be a quiet show I am told and we'll show you some pictures I'll be posting them when we get over to the arena they have there's nothing cut right about this this is another big event within an arena that is staged for television and the people here are big Trump supporters and I suspect that the

5:18mindset and the electricity and the arena will be significant and this is going to be the crowd that has got to turn out for the president and the question is what happens going forward with the people who have been Trump supporters or who are on the fence if all of them turn out then the Republicans might be able to hold onto the House might be able to hold onto the Senate could be I mean it's crazy but it could be a great night for Republicans but if any of these people stay or if some of these people who loved Trump because he hadn't gotten us into a war during the first term and now we have whatever you want to call this engagement with the Ron if they stay home it's going to be a bad night for Republicans I think the president's mindset is he has loyal followers who will turn out if he tells them or begs them or asks them to turn out and he's willing to gamble that being front and center over the course of the next two nights and campaigning

6:22aggressively between now and election day is what's going to turn that Trump crowd back out to vote in contrast to their apathy in the last election certainly in Virginia and in a couple of other elections it's interesting I'll show you this is the credential for tonight which has President Trump on it and his signature at the bottom so no one is hiding at the Trump connection no one here is bashful about President Trump you know sometimes you get into these situations and they say Mr. President we we're going to send you to really strong Republican areas and they do this with Democrats too like Barack Obama you don't send in necessarily places that hate him you send into places where he can motivate people that's why he turned out for Abigail's fan burger down in Hampton roads you know in the last elections that they figured he could motivate a black vote and a liberal white vote that wasn't necessarily turned on with a white woman running for governor

7:28I mean that's there were there people who be offended that I'm saying that but that is the truth that's why they got him to do it and that's why he showed up there rather than in southwest Virginia where he wouldn't have been welcome so those types of calculations are big factors in every campaign but the president himself and the Trump team they're doubling and tripling down on President Donald Trump getting his people out so we'll see what happens now this morning Newt Gingrich the former speaker of the house who I think was I don't even know if it's debatable probably the most influential and consequential speaker of the house in my lifetime with the contract with America which there's some people who are so strangely critical of the contract with America I think it was brilliant I don't know why we don't repeat it on a regular basis I think people like lists I think people want to know here are the 10 things that I'm going to accomplish and here's how I'm

8:31going to accomplish them and you know one reason a lot of politicians don't like lists is because then they're held accountable for either accomplishing or not fully accomplishing what they promise or flat out just dropping the ball and not doing what they said they would do in order to get elected and Newt Gingrich was the person who spearheaded this effort to articulate key legislative priorities and to push them and he did it at a time where you know he had Bill Clinton as president and was still able to get a lot of things accomplished so I thought it was interesting to hear from Newt Gingrich he is still apparently very optimistic that Republicans can win this year I don't think he's just blowing smoke to try to rally the troops and if you were to get him in private he would say something different I don't think that's the case you know one from a communication standpoint which is of course what I did for the longest time I thought this was insightful

9:35how many times have I talked on this program about socialism and communism I did it yesterday I believe that the Democrat Party has now largely been taken over by the leftist Marxist communists who do want to collapse the American system whether they can bring themselves to wave red-white blue flags and do the Pledge of Allegiance I don't think for a second they actually believe the Pledge of Allegiance but whether they can fake it long enough to fool enough people to believe that they're patriotic and they're not really trying to destroy the America we know I'm not sure but Newt Gingrich said instead of talking about socialism which does have a appeal especially to a lot of young people who didn't live through the Cold War who aren't unaware because our educational system is so corrupt and so biased and is malfunctioning on us

10:37you know people one thing if everybody could actually make change out of a dollar bill and could read at grade level and when they graduated from the 12th grade they could get a job and function unfortunately there's a large percentage of the population that can't do that so forgive me I'm giving you a failing grade for the public school system it's it's not working the way it needs to work but they the younger people have some sort of affinity for socialism the idea that this is a wealthy country so we could just take care of the needs of other citizens and you know it's nice that we live in a society where at least hypothetically people aren't willing to let folks starve in the street you know I've certainly in my travels around the world been to places where everyone is in their car and they know that right outside the window is a 10-year-old little girl who has eaten in two days and if she doesn't get some food she's gonna die and they're not worried about

11:40they just drive right on by and I'm glad we don't live in that society in some ways we've got to protect the capitalist society that has generated so much wealth and so much success for so many of our people the vast majority of our people even the folks who aren't doing well are doing better than the scenario I just described in other parts of the world and that's why I would say objectively if you analyze the systems that are working and the systems that are failing don't even look back at socialism as an option because it's not it is guaranteed failure for an increasing number of people the longer you engage with them and you will deplete all your resources and you won't have a system where you can replenish those resources and unlike the Nordic countries which have a pretty robust social safety net they're pretty homogeneous countries and they're pretty small countries and those people sign over a lot of

12:46their income to pay for those things so I mean you have to decide whether a nation like ours of 330 million people whether there's a significant portion of the population that's not working that wants free stuff everything from their self-impaired for to housing supplements to food stamps to health care I mean at some point do the math do you think that will work and that's the point the Newt Gangerist was making instead of talking about socialism talk about big government socialism because even the 20 something year old who kind of likes the idea of a social safety net and maybe would like a you know a four-day work week instead of a five-day work week and I mean I think at some point you kind of cut yourself out of the profits and you become dysfunctional and everything slows down if you're not willing to work five days a week but you know that's that's my argument that's my observation after many years of working a lot of different places but they

13:48don't like big government they don't trust big government and that you in any election and this was very wise on Newt Gangerist's part in any election in any place where you're trying to convince people that you have the solution that they need to buy into or at least vote for you look for the places of commonality and if it is true that people in their 20s and 30s have lost faith in their government and they are left of center that is in alignment with the position of people on the right who have also lost faith in government government exists and somebody's going to control it and I want it to be smaller and less intrusive in your life but I got to make sure that there's at least someone with a conservative viewpoint on life who is at the control board of the government and while I try to dismantle different sections of that control board and if talking to that demographic of people

14:49who are coming into the timeframe where they're going to vote in these elections and denouncing big government will help win them over to a conservative perspective I am more than willing to make that adjustment pardon me and I think that's probably a pretty important point in how we communicate the message that we try to share with folks fortunately in the room this morning after the governor of governor yankham spoke and after new ginkering spoke burt mississawa who is the republican nominee for us senate he's challenging mark warner who's been in the senate for a very very long time much longer than he ever said he was going to be and you know I was talking to somebody last night at one of these events and granted if if I met an event in Dallas it's especially around this grand convention they're probably people who are at least somewhat sympathetic to conservative philosophy I'm not expecting to

15:52walk up to the bar and have a drink with somebody who just turns out to be a talloriko supporter at least not this this weekend but one of the things that I thought was interesting this person had paid attention to virginia politics knew about the elections last year and knows about mark warner was the idea that mark warner says this is his last term in the senate and they suggested that it might be wise to ask people do you want to send somebody to the senate who's already telling you they're checking out this is their last six years and what does that mean from a practical standpoint do you think that person's gonna work hard on your behalf I mean how old is on board is it yes he's in his seventies right I mean that's so that doesn't disqualify you I'm not one of these stops who thinks that only people in their forties 30s 40s and 50s should be in government service I look at Trump when you agree with Trump or not he seems to be really energized

16:54and working hard you may not like the things he's working on but he's working hard at his age so I don't disqualify somebody based on age it's whether they're with it or not and whether they're willing to actually put in the work and as somebody who was in the senate as senior staffer for a number of years I will tell you I mean I guess you could just check out if you want to and not put in the work but the people of your state are gonna suffer because you've got a hustle to make sure that your state is represented and I think it's a legitimate question to ask Mark Warner why would someone cast their vote for you this year if this is your last six years if you're gonna roll it into your late seventies I guess mid to late seventies and you're not going to listen to the people why should he give a damn when anybody in Virginia has to say if he already knows he's not running for reelection if he already knows he's been there long enough

17:58where he doesn't have to answer to the people around he's gained some seniority he's become you know the the tribal chief of the intelligence community which I don't think is a selling point based on what I witnessed in the last several years I I think we got a problem with our intelligence community why would we put our faith in someone who's already told us that they're gonna check out I think that's a legitimate point and hopefully Berkness saw what we'll have an opportunity to debate Mark Warner now I mean this is a big deal for me because I'm finding out that a number of the incumbent democrats are following the lead of the very deceptive and I would say corrupt gizala hashmi who ran against me for lieutenant governor and would never hold public debate and I just don't think that's acceptable and you know what it doesn't matter whether it's me or it's somebody else if you're running for office if you're not willing to stand on a say with the person who has been nominated it's not some yahoo not some random wacko who's a drunk

19:03from the bar who you know decides they've got an axe to pick with you or they don't like you and they want to just beat you up I'm not saying you have to indulge every idiot who's out there but if you're not willing to stand on a stage with someone who has received the nomination of the opposing political party who I mean I guess that's really the main issue and engage with them that you shouldn't be you shouldn't be running and the voters of Virginia republican a democrat alike and I'm going to hold republicans accountable for this too in the future if you're not willing to have a debate then you should be running and we should not give you your vote I mean you see that video there of gizala hosh me in the capital that dismissive obnoxious attitude has been pervasive not just during the campaign but now in her quote unquote service at the state gap well she has no interest in answering questions from reporters that she doesn't like that

20:07Nick Menach guy from the ABC station in Washington I mean you may not like that Nick Menach asked tough questions but you know even if even if he was asking me tough questions that's the job of a reporter now granted I've done that job so I have an appreciation for that relationship and I have a respect for it and if someone doesn't have that respect they shouldn't be at office so once we get through this convention we're back in Richmond next week I'm going to start having the republican candidates on for a lot of these house seats and we'll talk to them about whether the democrats have been willing to stand on a stage explain what they have accomplished if they've been in office for the last two years or more of how much money they brought back to the district what problems they identify in their locality and how they have used the power of the federal government and the money of the federal government to try to solve those problems done to you and a good if you just

21:09stop there having cocktails with people in your political party from other parts of the country you know local folks expect you to deliver for them on a local level tell us what you've accomplished and if you're a republican I think that's an important question you should lead with that if you're a rock with men if you're a gin kickers if you're a giant pigwire if you're a bit of clod if you're more griffin start out by telling everybody what you have accomplished for the people in your district that's really important if you're not willing to articulate that if you're not willing to be questioned about it if you're not willing to go toe-to-toe with your opponent I think that's a problem and I've got to admonish anybody who isn't willing to do that and it sounds like Mark Warner I mean maybe this will change but it sounds like Mark Warner is going to try to run out the clock with voting starting what just nine days in Virginia early voting starts at nine days

22:11he's going to try to run out the clock get as many of his Democrat votes banked and I have to give credit to the Democrats I don't like this but I got to give credit to that they haven't organizational structure that seems to be pretty effective at getting Democrat leaning voters in the voting bank and I suspect it's a little more in depth than that where they're going to the they go into the nursing homes and they're going to any place they can find people where they can my word not there is manipulate them and devoting for their candidates I think Mark Warner's going to run out the clock try to back as many votes as he can and if he'd get away with not having a debate he'll try to get away with it but I'm going to keep beating that drum because I think it's really important all right let's take a quick break when we come back it's going to be a very interesting conversation with Tim Bartog who you know is communications director for President Trump

25:19do you think uh yeah I'm not concerned about the expense of it at all I mean I think that the fact that the president's political machinery is starting to spend in house and senate races across the country as we knew they would many many many tens of millions of dollars into the hundreds of millions of dollars spread across the country well and some candidate Republican candidates will have a decided advantage against their democratic opponents in many cases because of that money in the outside help but so the Republicans and the Trump political operation for the midterms they have plenty of money to spend on on races and they're doing that now so the expenses and materials I think it's an unusual and interesting idea especially in these modern times when we're used to seeing conventions just to nominate a president for a part of a candidate for president this midterm convention I think is a really great idea actually the purpose of it is not to please the media because we know that if Donald Trump announced you know every afternoon we're going to have ice cream they would find a reason to be against that of course so he says we're going to have a convention midterms and the media

26:22of course says oh that's a ridiculous idea because they don't want Republicans to be energized and that's exactly what it's going to do these midterms that are approaching are extremely important because you know as president Trump finishes his second term here it would not do have his agenda installed with a Democrat opposition Congress because we know what happened the last time all they're going to do is grind everything to a halt with every committee holding hearings on this or that in every imagined slight that they can possibly come up with and any work on behalf of the people of this country would grind to a halt that's why the media doesn't want this to happen and that's why you're having the media right reviews of a convention that hasn't even happened yet right that's that's who these people are they want Republicans to fail and so I wouldn't trust a word that any of them ever writes this is a fantastic idea the Democrats couldn't pull it off because they there's no way that their party could ever get together in the same arena without breaking up and breaking out in fist fights because the divide in their party is so deep so the Republicans are the only

31:41talk to anybody ever who thinks oh everything is just wonderful who created the system who drew it up who passed all of the legislation that created what we have right now the democrats in congress wrote every word of it obama care and the Biden inflation reduction act democrats own both of those things they created the system that everyone hates why on earth would we ever give them the pen again to write get more health care legislation what the trump administration has been doing is a great story to tell they've been going after first of all the president has brought drug prices down americans are saving about six hundred billion dollars on prescription drugs thanks to president trump and basically president trump only uh the health insurance companies are in his crosshairs now he's taking a look at those because everyone knows premiums are up coverages down there they'll deny anything you've been paying for this coverage for decades and suddenly when you go to use it you can't because they've denied you using a i by the way to deny you there's no transparency in what the pricing is and then we've got this monstrosity this 340b drug

32:46pricing program which is a good idea and concept it's supposed to pass on savings and discounts that the drug companies give to these hospitals so that the savings can be passed on to the consumers but the hospitals are taking the savings that they receive then marking up the price not only not passing the savings along but marking it up sometimes as much as 10,000 percent and then selling to the patients or billing the insurance companies or worse yet the government programs that are covering health care for everybody and it just continuously drives up the cost of health i know that was a long intro to this point health care issues health care policy is something that Republicans should talk about and race after race in state after state because the democrats own the problems that everyone encounters when they deal with our health care system and absolutely 100 percent republicans are right on this taken the lead on the solutions and identifying where you've been able to have an impact the last two years would be really important new gingers this morning at our

33:47Virginia breakfast said very candidly that Iran was a problem and that the gas prices were a problem and i didn't say that the president should skip it and i mean Iran has been a long running deadly problem for americans how would you advise the administration to deal with with this well one there is a radical difference between what the democrats have done and would do again if they returned to power and that is on purpose drive up the price of fossil fuels it's the first thing that Joe Biden did he did it throughout his four-year term and it is the same thing that the next democrat president would do as well they on purpose do things to reduce the domestic supply and create barriers to the production of domestic energy they make it more expensive because they want people to use it less driving up the price is the democrat goal everyone really needs to understand

34:50that that is their policy goal and they said yes they say it out loud they talk about it all the time that's what the whole environmental left is doing they're trying to drive people away from fossil for the love of god this is not a secret i don't know why i don't know why anyone whatever even question what democrat policy toward fossil fuel is they hate it they want to make it more expensive so no one ever uses it again that is wholly different from the president of the united states trying to rid the world of the chief sponsor of terrorism around the planet and that has the effect of temporarily driving up fuel prices those are not to similar policy goals not at all the republican the trump goal is far superior it has moral superiority and it also is just better policy let's get rid of the world's worst bully that's what he's planning to do and they're they're able to be the world's worst bully because why was they're sitting on these were the oil that gives them certain power

35:51Iran has always been a problem every president has passed on the problem and president trump was the one who decided to take it on when he succeeds when iran is no longer the state sponsor of terror the world will owe Donald trump a debt of thanks although i doubt the media or any of his political allies would ever extend that but that's what's going to happen that's what's going to happen and this idea that it would be over in 15 minutes like i think you have to i i would encourage it i mean it's not like people don't know what's happening yeah i think i think you lay out the case just like that look these guys want your gas to be more expensive on purpose because that's what they want i'm trying to rid the world of the the worst terrorists on the planet and temporarily gas is spike it's coming back down don't you worry about it so that's i mean that's that's the way i would i would approach it because yeah they those are issues and and you know the democrats are running on there but i mean they're liars they don't want cheap gas for the love of god they're just exploiting people's disgruntlement yes and at the same time openly rooting for

39:01compared to other places around the world and you know two hours later he's just getting warmed up honestly so yeah i think there's a lot of room for that do i think he'll go long yeah i'm not gonna guess how long but i bet you i don't know you know i have 90 minutes he will not have reached the conclusion yet i bet right i think that's that's just a guess i have no idea what the speech even looks like so so how does this translate to somebody like bernie's isawa who's running against mark water in the senate in virginia can i mean do you think that trump being front center in a state like virginia looking at the last couple of election cycles including what happened last year that this helps garner attention for the republican ticket or could it potentially hurt in northern virginia get those people who apparently hate trump and hate republicans so ryeva they can't wait to vote against whoever it is with an arbohydrate what do you think

40:02look this is a midterm election it is not a presidential election which means that the game is going to be turnout turnout turnout right there is not a democrat anywhere in the country that is going to offer anything that is a remotely good idea to solve any of the problems that people are facing in their in their own lives we know that we've seen their policies we know it and so if it's a turnout election you have to make sure that what are we we talked about at the very beginning of this conversation the purpose of this of the midterm convention which is why you're in Dallas is to energize the voters and get republicans fired up leading into this election and get them to turn out this is the turnout operation if you are a republican running for federal office in a midterm year and you don't want the involvement the attention the promotion and the enthusiasm of the incumbent president of the united states to help drive out his supporters in your election while he's not on the ballot he volunteers to come help you do that for you

41:05you are a stone cold idiot if you say you don't want that help i mean i don't care where you are this is a turnout election and the president of the united states drives turnout if he says hey you think we should come to your district you say yes that's what you said well the good thing is we know in virginia with yankins win that those votes do exist sure i can just get them to get them to show up yeah exactly right and so i mean do you think that you got every democrat is running around let's see i think you got a lot of nervous some consultants are nervous about telling their candidates oh yes you can accept the president's help you know and democrats go through this when there's a democrat president as well and i'm sure they all had conversations about obama but no one drives republican uh bit bit like excitement through the roof like Donald Trump it is it is unbelievable the effect he has on voter turnout we've said it over and over again you look at different you know candidate when it's a lot of times even if if the president does get involved in a race and things aren't as as good as he had done voters love Donald Trump if he's not involved in your race

42:10you're at a complete disadvantage in the competitive race you need him to drive out your votes you absolutely do um these nervous consultants all they do is give uh caused delight in editorial pages around the country like oh look at all these republicans afraid the republicans are afraid to campaign with their own president are making a huge mistake and basically committing political suicide if that's my view that's my view i used to ask James Blair who's in charge of all the money what does he think i'll bet you tell you something similar all right well if you're optimistic we're going to keep on fighting voting starts in Virginia what nine days yeah and look i want to say a couple things about mark war i mean you know i you've known him i'm sure for a while and i i covered when i was a reporter his very first race for the senate which he lost to john warner and that he is not the same mark warner that he was when he was running against john warner he does he looks like he's trying to keep up with the christ merphy's of the world he he is trying to be like

43:12like trying to lock up uh an msnbc ms now contributor slot when he's done being senator whenever that is in a couple of months or six years from you think he really has shifted way to the left oh hundred percent he's he's absolutely chasing the far left wing of his party you watch his twitter feed his twitter feed is way to the left of anywhere that virginia is you know and i you're the guy to ask this question too what are you supposed to percentage of people who vote for mark warner this election uh think that he's think that it's still john warner what do you think oh i hope it's not double digits but i think i think they're probably not of them non zero who hear the who hear warner and are just confused yeah yeah i while i'm talking to some virginia stuff i want to get a shout out to one of my clients bencline really good guy congressman from virginia six he's got an opponent uh a democrat um and he is doing well and he's going to dispatch her and bencline will be uh returned back to congress another reason why i'm optimistic

44:14you know republicans can only lose three in the house they have a three house three seat edge in the house and and if republic if democrats get four uh they can take it and they need four in the senate as well um that the fact that redistricting failed which was illegal of course it unconstitutional in virginia right the fact that that failed uh was a huge boost to republican chances of being able to keep the house of representatives in in November so um ben bencline was a leader in that effort to to beat that back and thankfully the virginia supreme court uh grew a spine and did something about it and overturned it um but uh i'm ready to see bencline returned to the house which he 100% certainty will be and and hope our virginia comments get there too because if we can protect our incumbents in virginia and in places like pennsylvania maybe and gains gains that we've got in like a other states were redistricting was big like texas um then you know if let me say this one last thing i know you're probably running out of time here john yeah generally speaking a lot of political analysts look at this if the national mood according to the margins that republicans have

45:19right now in the house talking only about the house if the if the way that the election is tracking right now and is polling favors the democrats by five points so if right now the polling nationwide is d plus five on the house republicans can withstand that republican the republican majority can withstand a d plus five election because of the redistricting largely if it gets a b plus six and it's a little dicey right right now it is d plus six and we already know that polling favors democrats especially in the summer if this titans even by one point in national polling job one point republicans retain the house right simple as that a lot of work to do Tim murtal i always appreciate the chance to talk to you thank you john thank you again as always happy to be happy to be happy to be happy to be happy to see you in person sometime real soon up into the Virginia thank you yeah well enjoy the show in Dallas i wish i were there with you okay thanks man all right we're going to take quick break we'll come back

49:29the 92 convention was that houston yes and i was the i was the announcer i was that's right the astradome introduced right everybody it was great i hope ladies and gentlemen welcome to the republican national committee that was that i don't know that i've ever told you this store i'll tell real quick um yeah i i was in college and i got an internship at cnn for the convention so i was gonna go live in houston and work for cnn and i don't think they actually paid this was back when no one interns didn't expect to get paid um but anyway i got this internship and i used my credential which is a little shiti but i used my credential to get backstage and to find the republican producer and i talked to him about helping to write the script and be the announcer and introduce everybody and they had not planned on having a live announcer and i said well what if something happens what if

50:30you need to let people know about a change in the program or you know you need somebody to vamp and kill some time while you make and so they gave me an audition and hired me on the spot and so i went back to the lady at cnn and i said gosh i'm so sorry to do this to you thank you for the internship but i'm gonna give you the credential back they were furious oh they were living um um wow i still regret it i mean it was yeah i know especially given what cnn turned out to be in the last one 30 years that that was the case of being at use to being backstage with president of s's ragan with president bush uh and i and i know i've told you the night that pat you can and spoke he went on forever and completely ripped up the script and was taking everybody off he was blowing the time and ragan was speaking next and they wanted ragan to be able to talk about his vice president bush um getting reelected in prime time and pat you can and just was so

51:39disrespectful and wasn't obeying the time limits and there was this loudmouth young guy who was probing his late 20s who was just really belligerent backstage i was like who the hell is that it was george w bush and somebody told me that oh well don't say anything that's the president's son at that point he hadn't run for tax i don't i guess he maybe owned the rangers at that point it was it was it was it was right around that time i think 92 93 was when he purchased the rangers and of course he had a had a had a bit of a reputation leading up to that that he was able to uh to he was behind him he was very um adamant and loud that he was mad that was talking too long and i didn't know who it was so i'm thinking who is this and then you know this is one of the things now i'm not going to say it's a racial or halger story because the president the son of the president becoming the president isn't exactly a come up by your

52:43you know pull yourself up by your right story i'm not delusional that's not true but how interesting is it that i didn't know who that was and no one did and then a few years later that guy's running not even ten he's he's president of the united states within a decade right and a rat and a rat the people of the moment too that would have been a different story had he been you know if that was the janitor who then became the president that would be the heratio out your story but i still thought it was going well it's funny it's funny that you have that story about about the rnc my my grandfather as i understand uh my my mom would be the better one to talk about this but when he was clerk of congress i think his job for many cycles was was more or less organizing the the the various rnc's i think from the 60s to the to the to the late 70s that was right up to 76 i think 76 he was i want to say probably 64 to 76 he was he was the person
