Widely referred to as a philanthropic ‘philosopher-king’, Marcus throughout his life worked to embody the philosophy of Stoicism. Stoicism helped him to be constantly mindful of his thoughts and actions. During his rule, Aurelius constructed a series of autobiographical writings known as the Meditations.
