第一次ポエニ戦争の端緒となるカルタゴによるメッセナ包囲を打ち破り、シチリア内でも有数の都市であるアグリゲントゥムまで手中に収め、随一の都市シラクサのヒエロン２世もローマのバックに付いている。
元々ローマにシチリア全島を確保しようなどという欲はなかっただろうが、これ、ワンチャンいけるんじゃないという空気が漂い始める。
とは言え、シチリアは島である。未だかつてまともな海戦などしたことのないローマでも、海軍力がなければどうにもならないことは分かっていた。。。。
