エルンスト・テオドール・アマデウス・ホフマン（Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, 1776年1月24日 － 1822年6月25日）はドイツの作家、作曲家、音楽評論家、画家、法律家。文学、音楽、絵画と多彩な分野で才能を発揮したが、現在では主に後期ロマン派を代表する幻想文学の奇才として知られている。
まったく才能が無い人は才能があるのではないかとは考えない。才能があるに違いないと思ってはいるが、時々自分には才能がないのではないかとの疑いがふっと脳裏をかすめる。そんなはずはないと工夫を重ねる。その繰り返しで才能は姿を現す。ホフマンはそういう過程を忍耐強く進んだ人だったのだろう。
