L'ascesi non è solo "passiva", perché senza il contributo della nostra volontà che cerca di conquistare nuovi "abiti" non c'è alcun progresso. "Dacci un taglio" è un'espressione comune, ma che richiama il famoso passo del Vangelo: "se la tua mano destra ti è occasione di scandalo, tagliala e gettala via da te" (Cfr. Mt 5, 29-31). Ci sono momenti in cui siamo chiamati a fare passi affidati alla nostra solo responsabilità. Decidere, in fondo, è "tagliare" le altre possibilità per preferirne una. Senza rinunce, non sono possibili nemmeno le scelte. Scegliere l'amore e mettersi alla scuola dell'amore richiede cuori non sentimentali, ma coraggiosi.
