Every day, excessive delays and denials from big insurers keep patients from accessing
the care they need.
And when care is urgent, these delays can be disastrous.
These practices cost billions in wasteful spending, driving up costs for American families.
But while big insurers put up barriers, America's hospitals and health systems are in your corner,
navigating endless reviews and appeals to get you the care you need when you need it
most.
It's time to curb these harmful practices and put the focus back on patients.
Brought to you by the Coalition to Strength in America's Health Care.
Welcome back to the Michigan Insider here on the big 1050 WTK,
online at the big 1050.com.
And we were once again joined by our friend Kevin Connery,
the head coach, the Michigan men's lacrosse team coach.
Welcome back to the show, Horia.
You know, we're doing okay.
You're doing okay, slugging through.
All right, so coming off of the first big tense game of the season,
you guys took the trip to Baltimore to play Johns Hopkins,
the 12th ranked team in the country.
It turned into a 14 to 8 setback.
You did actually have the first goal of the game, but then Johns Hopkins,
they just, they seem to score in waves early on in the game,
in particular.
And just nothing that you guys were able to overcome in that second.
Have you tried a couple of times, had a couple of moments,
but I'm unable to overcome what they were able to do in the first half?
Yeah, I give our guys a lot of credit.
You know, they're very resilient.
We battled back a few times.
We're getting closer and closer and then, you know,
just couldn't just couldn't get over a certain amount of homes.
Credit to Johns Hopkins, they did a great job,
back to shooting the game plan.
We just got to come up with a couple of players here or there and put the ball
in the back of the net a few more times.
You know, it's, it's a pretty simple game when it comes down to it.
So we've talked a lot about this over the course of the seasons.
We've gotten to this stage and I was going back over the game a little bit.
And it's like smacks me in the face,
how young you are at really key positions.
You have a hatchet from a freshman,
you're in the face of circle by a freshman and like you go down the list,
freshman doing this, freshman doing that.
And it's sometimes it's unfortunate that you go through when you're
have a younger team, but sometimes teams go through the lumps.
How do you keep their heads up knowing that they're still, obviously,
you pick up a couple of key wins moving forward and you're right back where you want to be?
Yeah, it's just the focus on the process, right?
That that's really what we're building.
We're focusing on the process for the day to day, you know,
if we get caught up in the end results, you know, it's easy to get lost, right?
We're focused on the process of building our confidence,
building our, our team, you know, these guys are going to pop, you know,
they are, you know, and, and it's, and it's an exciting group of young players
with a couple of older guys kind of mixed in to kind of help us settle in.
We're relying on those old guys to kind of be a setting force,
but those young guys, man, they're explosive, they're dynamic.
There are a lot of really, a lot of, a lot of upside in this roster.
The end of the day, we actually, you know, we'd like to see the W's
get back in the column, but we understand that Monday through Friday,
we're consistently building these guys, they're awareness,
their game says, you know, so that we can come up and put a good show
on the field on Saturdays.
Obviously, four huge games left in the regular season,
an opportunity you said for the really to click and kind of have that moment
where where it just starts to really start to, especially the ball starts to go
to the back of the net more than anything else.
But do you catch yourself maybe when you're watching film and you see some
of these young guys do some really awesome things, you're like, man,
next year when they're sophomores or in two years when they're juniors,
we've kind of had similar conversation last year with Kim bar and Jericho
on the women's team when they're having their ups and downs at times,
because she had three freshmen in a starting lineup.
And sometimes you just have to take your lump so you can get to the next stage.
Yeah, you do, you know, and it's, it's kind of our schedule.
Doesn't really allow you to kind of take a breath, you know, and get like that,
get right kind of a week.
But with these young guys, you know, they're going to look back on this
and look at this season and say, man, this was my, this was my baptism by fire.
And eventually, you know, we're hoping it clicks a lot sooner than later.
Obviously, but, you know, but yeah, the future, there's still a bunch of
other young guys that are running around on our field during practices that
haven't really cracked a line up that have developed really, really nicely and
add a lot of different, different pieces to the puzzle.
So yeah, it's exciting for sure to think about the future.
But right now, we're really focused on, you know, how can we go ahead and send
these senior C's graduates students off with a really great experience?
And some of these young guys are adding to that, you know, their leadership,
that the older guys' leadership is really adding to that kind of perspective.
I'm saying, hey, that's great.
Future is great.
But man, it's fleeting.
It's only four years.
It's only, you know, a couple of instances.
And yeah, we're building lifelong memories and great experiences for our guys.
But the end of the day, you know, it's fleeting.
So we're trying to help these young guys and these older players are helping
these young guys realize, you know, that time, time is the most valuable commodity
that we all have.
So really invest in it and take a look around and just appreciate what we all
have here.
Yeah, I've never met a college senior, especially a college athlete,
senior that didn't say, man, it went by in a blink.
And so, and we're, and obviously the focus really is obviously on the four games
coming up this year, your next one.
Finally, after it feels like forever, you're home for a game on Saturday.
You'll be back here at UM lacrosse stadium.
And so hoping to see us, we said more balls put back into the,
are put into the back of the net.
I had another question for you about this scene.
As we talked to Kevin Conor here on the Michigan insider on the big 1050 WTK online
at the big 1050.com about just how bonded the team is in close.
It just sounds like from the conversations we've had that through the trials
and tribulations of the season, this team is really close.
It is.
And, you know, I think that part of the good and the bad of having a heavy road schedule,
right, when you get on to the road, you're forced to bond, right?
You're in the hotels around buses.
You know, we had, we had a crazy travel schedule when we were on our way back home
from Houston, right?
You got dopey games that these guys are playing in the airport.
And really just spending a lot of time together.
These guys are best friends.
And, you know, and that really has started since the day that we stepped on campus.
I think we really value relationships.
We value the locker room.
We understand that once we step on the field, it's all about competition.
But when we step off the field and into the locker room, it's about the brotherhood
of Michigan, the cross.
And that's been being built up over the past, you know, 9 to 11 to 50 years.
So it's a special place.
And it's a unique locker room and each guy takes a big chunk away with them
and leaves a lasting legacy there for us.
And that bonded locker room is why when you look at these four games coming up
over the rest of the season, we're going to focus on the one, obviously,
with Maryland being the next one, but four big 10 games still to come.
I look at any team that is really bonded because there are plenty of teams
in college and professional sports that they pay lip service to that.
And it's not really true.
Like they sort of get along in competition, but they don't hang out when they get away
from when you know, once they're out of the locker room.
When you're bonded, it just feels like the transition to working through the process
to having the process to show its results.
Seems to go a little quicker when the teams are bonded.
Yeah, I agree.
I agree.
And you know, when we were really successful down the stretch of big 10s,
it's because it was in that aspect of time.
Like guys just wanted to spend more time together.
So it was really unique and a fun group to kind of spend some.
And this young group is really embracing that.
And it's cool to see graduate students and freshmen have no higher arc
than just a bunch of guys who are playing the cross together.
Yeah, a fun team.
And it's going to be fun to watch them on Saturday.
We'll keep our fingers crossed for good weather.
What can you tell us about the 12th ring Terrapins?
They're a traditional powerhouse.
I think, you know, right now, these are two teams kind of, you know, kind of put
in some pieces together, a lot of new parts for both teams, but rather, you know,
now that we're hitting the stretch, it's going to be a big time cross games.
It's going to be physical.
It's going to be hard knows and two teams that have kind of battled each other
for the last few years and, you know, not a lot, not a lot of love between them.
So we're looking forward to a very physical game, very hard knows game
and a very classic big 10 matchup again.
The game is this Saturday, two o'clock, U M lacrosse,
stadium Michigan versus number 12 Maryland.
Get your tickets.
Check out the game, support the boys and coach.
We'll talk to you soon. Good luck.
Thank you very much.
That's our weekly check it with Michigan men's lacrosse coach Kevin Connery
on the other side of the break.
We'll transition to football in the seven o'clock hour.
Of course, back to basketball, as we are about to embark on the sweet 16
of the NCAA men's basketball tournament starting tonight.
And the, of course, Michigan playing tomorrow.
And then the sweet 16 of the NCAA women's basketball tournament starting tomorrow
and Michigan, of course, playing on Saturday.
But we get to football on the other side of the break as we roll through
spring football practices as well at this time of years.
