Yves Joseph de Kerguelen was a French naval officer and explorer who led an expedition to the southern Indian Ocean in the 1770s. He is best known for claiming to have discovered the Kerguelen Islands, which he believed to be a fertile land ready for colonization. His embellished accounts of the expedition captured the imagination of King Louis XV and the French court.
