William Marcy Tweed, commonly known as 'Boss Tweed,' was a corrupt American politician who led Tammany Hall, the Democratic Party political machine in New York City. He is infamous for his involvement in one of the most notorious cases of political corruption in U.S. history. Tweed was eventually imprisoned but managed to escape briefly in 1875.
