The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is the revenue service of the United States federal government. The agency is responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing tax laws. The IRS is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and employs over 80,000 people to collect taxes and provide taxpayer assistance. The agency has a long history dating back to 1862, when it was created to collect tariffs and other taxes on imported goods.
