Pioneering Crimean War nurse
Mary Seacole was a Jamaican-Scottish nurse, entrepreneur, and adventurer. Born in 1805 in Kingston, Jamaica, she is best known for her work during the Crimean War. Seacole established a 'British Hotel' near the front lines, providing care and comfort to wounded soldiers from all sides of the conflict. Her work was largely forgotten until recent years, when her contributions to the war effort were rediscovered and recognized.
