La Goulue was a French dancer and actress who was known for her performances in the cancan, a popular dance style in Paris at the turn of the century. She was born Marie Josephine Canet in 1865 and began her career as a dancer in the late 1880s. La Goulue became a star of the Parisian cabarets and was known for her energetic and provocative performances. She was also a pioneer for women's rights and was involved in several feminist movements. La Goulue's later work involved taming lions, which she performed in a series of public demonstrations. She died in 1929 at the age of 64.
