Kayla Mueller

Humanitarian worker and aid volunteer

Kayla Mueller was an American humanitarian worker and aid volunteer who was kidnapped by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in 2013. She was held captive for over a year before being killed in a Syrian airstrike in 2015. Mueller's family and supporters have advocated for the release of prisoners held by ISIS. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal for her humanitarian work.
