Joseph Ignace Guillotin was a French physician and politician who is best known for inventing the guillotine. Born in 1738 in Normandy, France, Guillotin studied medicine at the University of Paris and later became a politician. He was a strong advocate for the abolition of torture and the establishment of a more humane system of justice. Guillotin's invention of the guillotine was intended to reduce the suffering of those who were sentenced to death. He died in 1814 at the age of 75.
